1. Structure and Properties of Water
🏷 Tags: water, polar, hydrogen bond, properties
ENGLISH

Water (H₂O) is a polar molecule: oxygen pulls electrons towards itself, so the oxygen end is slightly negative and the hydrogen ends slightly positive. Neighbouring molecules attract each other through hydrogen bonds, which explains water's high boiling point (100 °C) for such a small molecule, its high surface tension, and why it is such a good solvent for ionic and polar substances.

Water is unusual in another way: ice is less dense than liquid water, so ice floats and insulates lakes in winter, letting aquatic life survive below. Water also has a high specific heat capacity, which moderates coastal climates.

O δ−H δ+H δ+H-bond: ··· O—H ··· Obetween molecules
2. Hard and Soft Water
🏷 Tags: hard water, soft water, scum, scale
ENGLISH

Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium ions, usually as hydrogencarbonates or sulphates. It wastes soap (forming scum instead of lather) and leaves scale (limescale) in kettles and pipes. Soft water lathers easily with soap and leaves no scale, but very soft water can dissolve lead from old pipes.

Temporary hardness (from Ca(HCO₃)₂ / Mg(HCO₃)₂) is removed by boiling: the hydrogencarbonate decomposes to insoluble carbonate, which precipitates out. Permanent hardness (from sulphates/chlorides) is not removed by boiling; it is removed by washing soda, or by ion-exchange resins that swap Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺ for Na⁺.

TEMPORARY hardnessCa(HCO₃)₂ — remove by BOILING ↓ CaCO₃PERMANENT hardnessCaSO₄ / MgSO₄ — washing soda or ion exchange
3. Water Pollution and Its Effects
🏷 Tags: water pollution, sewage, eutrophication, heavy metals
ENGLISH

Water pollution comes from: sewage and animal waste (disease-causing microbes); fertilisers and detergents (nitrates and phosphates that cause algal blooms — eutrophication — which use up oxygen and kill fish); industrial waste (heavy metals like lead and mercury, and toxic chemicals); and oil spills, which coat birds and block light for aquatic plants.

Polluted water spreads diseases such as cholera and typhoid, harms aquatic ecosystems, and makes water unsafe to drink or irrigate with. Testing for dissolved oxygen, nitrates and bacteria shows how polluted a sample is.

Sources of water pollutionsewage • fertilisers • factories • oil spills→ algal blooms → oxygen loss → fish deaths
4. Water Treatment and Purification
🏷 Tags: water treatment, filtration, chlorination
ENGLISH

Water treatment follows steps: screening removes large debris; sedimentation lets suspended solids settle; filtration through sand and gravel removes fine particles; chlorination (or ozone/UV treatment) kills bacteria and viruses; and fluoridation may be added for dental health. At home, boiling water for a few minutes kills microbes, and filtering removes particles.

Desalination (removing salt from seawater by distillation or reverse osmosis) supplies drinking water in dry coastal regions, but it uses a lot of energy. Clean water is a shared responsibility: do not dump waste into drains and rivers.

1 Screening → 2 Settling → 3 Filtration4 Chlorination (kills microbes) → 5 StorageAt home: filter, then boilDesalination: distillation or reverse osmosis
5. Fertilisers, Water Scarcity and Conservation
🏷 Tags: fertiliser, urea, scarcity, conservation
ENGLISH

Nitrogen fertilisers supply nitrogen for leaf growth and proteins. Urea (CO(NH₂)₂) is the most concentrated solid nitrogen fertiliser at 46% nitrogen (exercise C 20.3) — cheap, soluble and easy to apply, though it must not be overused. Other nitrogen fertilisers include ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate.

Phosphorus fertilisers (e.g. superphosphate) promote root growth, flowering and seed formation, while potassium fertilisers (e.g. potassium chloride KCl, potassium sulphate K₂SO₄, potassium nitrate KNO₃) build disease resistance and root development and help ripening (exercise MCQ 20.6). Overuse of any fertiliser washes into rivers and lakes, causing eutrophication — algal blooms that choke aquatic life.

Water scarcity and conservation: Fresh water is limited, so it must be used wisely — fix leaking taps and pipes, use drip irrigation instead of flooding fields, harvest rainwater, reuse treated water, and avoid wasting water at home. Saving water protects both farming and drinking-water supplies.

Section C: Constructed Response Questions

1. 20.1 Describe the negative effects of using plastics in every day life.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Plastics are non-biodegradable, so they pile up in landfills and waterways, block drains (causing floods), harm animals that eat or get tangled in them, break into microplastics that enter food chains, and release toxic fumes when burnt.

2. 20.2 Explain one method to remove dissolved impurities present in water.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Distillation: boil the water and condense the steam — dissolved salts and solids stay behind, and pure water is collected. (Ion exchange and reverse osmosis also remove dissolved impurities.)

3. 20.3 Why urea is regarded as a good nitrogenous fertilizer?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Urea (CO(NH₂)₂) is about 46% nitrogen — the most concentrated solid nitrogen fertiliser — so a small amount supplies a lot of nitrogen; it is cheap, soluble in water, easy to store and apply, and quickly available to plants.
