Source note: This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest.com library chapter for Class 10 Computer Science. No official book was available on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed, and the exercise below is labelled SLO / board-pattern, as in the library chapter — it is not presented as the book's official exercise.
Data are raw facts and figures — numbers, words, measurements — with no meaning on their own, e.g. “87, 92, 78”. Information is data that has been processed and organised so it means something: “the class average is 85.7, so the class did well.” Data science is the field that collects, cleans, analyses and visualises data to find patterns and support decisions.
Why it matters now: every day, phones, shops, hospitals, schools and websites create huge amounts of data. Organisations that understand their data can serve customers better, waste less, and plan wisely — a shop that knows which items sell on Fridays stocks them before Friday.
Big data means data that is too large, fast or varied for ordinary tools: volume (how much), velocity (how fast it arrives), variety (numbers, text, photos, video). Data science gives us tools for exactly this kind of data.
Types of data: Numerical (quantitative) — numbers you can calculate with, e.g. marks, temperature, price. Categorical (qualitative) — labels or groups, e.g. favourite colour, blood group, pass/fail. Structured data fits neat rows and columns (a spreadsheet table). Unstructured data does not — emails, photos, videos, social-media posts.
Collection methods: Surveys/questionnaires (ask many people the same questions); observation (watch and record, e.g. counting customers per hour); experiments (change one thing and measure the effect); sensors and devices (weather stations, fitness bands, CCTV counters); and existing records (school registers, shop sales records, government statistics).
Good data collection: ask clear questions, collect enough responses (a survey of 3 students cannot describe a school), and record honestly — biased or tiny samples lead to wrong conclusions, however fancy the analysis.
Real data is messy: missing values, duplicate rows, spelling differences (“Lahore” vs “lahore”), wrong formats (a date written as text). Data cleaning fixes these problems before analysis — because analysis of dirty data gives wrong answers (“garbage in, garbage out”).
Cleaning steps: remove exact duplicates; fill or flag missing values (never silently invent them); make formats consistent (dates all one way, names one case); correct obvious errors (age 250 is impossible); and sort/filter to check the data makes sense.
Organising: put data in a table with one row per observation and one column per variable, with a clear heading row. In a spreadsheet, keep one kind of value per column (do not mix “45 kg” text with numbers 45 — keep numbers numeric so formulas work).
Analysis answers questions from clean data. The three most-used summaries for numbers are: mean (average) — add all values, divide by how many; median — the middle value when sorted (better when a few extreme values would drag the mean); mode — the most frequent value. Example: marks 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 → mean 80, median 80, mode: none.
Spreadsheets (MS Excel / Google Sheets) are the class-10 practical tool for this: enter data in cells, use formulas like =AVERAGE(B2:B11), =SUM(...), =MAX(...), =MIN(...), =COUNT(...); sort and filter to find patterns; and use conditional formatting to highlight high/low values. A formula recalculates automatically when data changes — that is the whole advantage over hand calculation.
Practical tip: never type a result that a formula can compute. Typed results go stale when data changes; formulas stay correct.
، =MAX(...)، =MIN(...)، =COUNT(...)
A chart shows patterns that a table hides. Choose by question: Bar chart — compare categories (sales per month, marks per subject). Line chart — show change over time (temperature through the day). Pie chart — show parts of a whole (budget shares) — only for a few categories. Column chart is a vertical bar chart; the names vary, the logic is the same.
Good chart rules: give a clear title; label both axes with units; start the value axis at zero for bar charts (otherwise differences look exaggerated); keep colours few and meaningful; and never use a chart type that hides what the data actually says. A chart must make the truth easier to see, not prettier to hide.
In Excel/Sheets: select the data → Insert → Chart → pick the type → add title and axis labels. The chart updates automatically when the data changes.
Data about people is powerful and sensitive. Ethics rules: collect only what you need; get consent where required; keep personal data private and secure (passwords, limited access); never share or sell people's data without permission; and report results honestly — do not cherry-pick numbers that support what you already wanted to say.
Privacy in practice: remove names/IDs when sharing data for analysis (anonymisation); be careful with photos, locations and children's data; and remember that “deleted” online data often survives in backups and screenshots.
Careers: data analyst (turns data into reports and charts), data scientist (builds models and predictions), data engineer (builds the pipelines that move data), and spreadsheet/database roles in every office, hospital, bank and school. Class-10 skills — clean tables, formulas, charts, honest summaries — are the first steps on all these paths.
Book note (please read): This page follows the PCTB book Computer Science and Entrepreneurship, Class 10 (session 2026–27). The chapter titles and section order were verified against current 2026–27 Punjab listings and the board syllabus for this book. The book PDF itself could not be opened page-by-page during this build, so the questions below are SLO / board-pattern questions written for this chapter — they are NOT presented as the book's official exercise. Where a point was not confirmed from the book, it is kept general and no invented fact is stated as a book fact.
Answer: (b) Data — information is data processed and organised to mean something.
Answer: (c) Blood group B+ — a label/group, not a number you calculate with.
Answer: (b) Median — the mean is the average, the mode is the most frequent value.
Answer: (b) Line chart — bar charts compare categories, pie charts show parts of a whole.
Answer: (c) The mean of B2 to B11 — SUM adds, MAX finds the largest, COUNT counts.
Answer: (b) Analysis of dirty data gives wrong answers — cleaning must come before analysis.
Answer: (c) Anonymisation — it protects people's privacy.
Answer: (b) Too small — small or biased samples lead to wrong conclusions.
Answer: Data: raw facts with no meaning alone, e.g. 87, 92, 78. Information: processed, organised data with meaning, e.g. 'the class average is 85.7, so the class did well.'
Answer: Surveys/questionnaires: ask many people the same questions, e.g. favourite subject. Observation: watch and record, e.g. counting customers per hour. (Also: experiments, sensors, existing records.)
Answer: Real data has duplicates, missing values, inconsistent formats and errors. Analysing dirty data gives wrong answers — 'garbage in, garbage out' — so duplicates are removed, formats fixed and missing values flagged first.
Answer: When a few extreme values would drag the mean away from the typical value — e.g. incomes where one very large value raises the mean but the median still shows the typical income.
Answer: A bar (or column) chart — it compares categories (months) clearly. A line chart would suit change over time, a pie chart only parts of a whole.
Answer: Collect: gather data (e.g. a survey of students' study hours and marks, or existing registers). Clean: remove duplicates, fix formats, flag missing values. Organise: one row per student, one column per variable, in a spreadsheet. Analyse: compute mean/median, sort/filter, look for patterns (do more study hours go with higher marks?). Visualise: bar/line charts to show the pattern. Decide: e.g. arrange extra study support for students with low hours. Report honestly, including limits of the data.
Answer: Mean = (60+70+80+90+100)/5 = 80. Median = middle value when sorted = 80. Mode = most frequent value = none (all appear once). Mean uses all values but is pulled by extremes; median resists extremes and shows the typical value; mode shows the most common category/value, useful for categorical data like favourite colour.
Answer: Collection: use existing sales records (item, quantity, date/time, price) plus observation counts if needed. Spreadsheet: one row per sale, columns for item/date/quantity; SUM per item, AVERAGE daily sales, MAX/MIN to find best/worst days. Charts: bar chart to compare items, line chart to show sales over weeks. Ethics: customer names (if any) are not needed — keep only sales data. Decision: stock best sellers before peak days.
This chapter introduces data science: the difference between raw data and useful information, the types of data and how to collect them fairly, how to clean and organise messy data, how to analyse it with spreadsheet formulas, sorting and filtering, how to show it honestly with charts, and the ethics, privacy and careers around data.
Revision guidance: Revision guidance: take any small table of numbers and do the full chain once — clean it, find mean, median and mode, sort and filter it, then pick the right chart and say why. If you can say why, you understand charts; if not, re-read the chart section.
