In 7th-century Arabia, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) transformed a deeply tribal and unjust society into one based on justice, compassion and equality. His reforms were aimed at the most marginalized and oppressed groups of his time: women, orphans and slaves. His teachings are embedded in the Qur'an and his practices (Sunnah).
Before Islam: society was tribal and patriarchal. Women were deprived of basic human rights and newborn girls were sometimes buried alive. Orphans were exploited and left without care or protection. Slavery was widespread and slaves were treated as subhuman, with no rights or legal recognition.
Women's rights: (a) Own and inherit property — Qur'an 4:7 gives women a fixed share of inheritance; (b) Consent to marriage — a woman's consent became necessary for a valid marriage; (c) Divorce and maintenance — fair treatment and financial provision (Qur'an 2:241); (d) Education and knowledge — “Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.” Women were also involved in public matters, treaties, and even combat when necessary.
Orphans: caring for orphans was made a noble, rewarded act — “I and the one who looks after an orphan will be together in Paradise like this” (holding up two fingers, Sahih al-Bukhari). Guardians were held accountable for an orphan's property (Qur'an 4:6), and consuming it wrongfully was declared a major sin (Qur'an 4:10).
Slaves: rather than abrupt abolition, Islam promoted emancipation step by step — freeing a slave was a highly virtuous act and an expiation for sins (Qur'an 90:13–18), slaves were to be treated like brothers — “Feed them with what you eat and clothe them as you clothe yourselves” (Sahih Muslim) — they gained legal protections and the right to earn freedom through a contract (mukataba). Hazrat Bilal ibn Rabah (RA), a former slave, became the Rasoolullah's muazzin and a prominent sahabi.
Closing message: the Last Sermon at the Farewell Pilgrimage declared: “All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab; a white has no superiority over a black, nor a black over a white — except by piety and good action.”
Theme box (p.6) kehta hai: Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) championed the rights of the most vulnerable people — “women, orphans, and slaves” — by challenging deeply rooted injustices and introducing laws based on justice and compassion. His teachings promoted equality, dignity, and protection for all individuals, regardless of gender, status, or social class.
Message for today: the reforms were not only progressive for their time but remain relevant today. The Last Sermon is called a “timeless charter of equality and justice” in the lesson: superiority comes only from piety and good action, never from race, colour or tribe. Tauheed (belief in the Oneness of Allah) is presented as inseparable from belief in human brotherhood.
Figurative Language (pp.8–9): (1) Simile — comparison using “like” or “as” (He is as brave as a lion); (2) Metaphor — direct comparison without “like/as” (Time is a thief that steals our moments); (3) Personification — human traits to non-human things (The wind whispered through the trees); (4) Hyperbole — exaggeration (I've told you a million times!); (5) Onomatopoeia — a word that imitates a sound (The piece of meat sizzled on the pan); (6) Alliteration — repetition of the same consonant sound (Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers); (7) Idioms — meaning different from literal words (It's raining cats and dogs); (8) Oxymoron — two contradictory terms together (Deafening silence filled the room).
Vocabulary strategies (pp.9–10): word parts (prefix, suffix, root), dictionary/thesaurus, multiple meanings, and context clues — e.g. “famished” = very hungry (clues: devoured, entire bowl, in seconds); “ambiguous” = unclear (clue: tried to follow carefully); “console” = comfort (clues: bad news, tissues, kind words). Idiom vs proverb: an idiom's meaning differs from its words; a proverb is a short common saying expressing a truth or advice.
Writing Skill — Editing & Proofreading + Paragraph Process (pp.12–15): Editing improves content, structure and clarity (sentence structure, word choice, reorganizing ideas). Proofreading is the final step — spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar. Hyphenated compound nouns (check-in, mother-in-law) and adjectives (well-known author, full-time job). –ough sounds: though “oh”, tough “uff”, through “oo”, thought “awt”. Paragraph process: Brainstorming → Mind-Mapping → Structuring (topic sentence, supporting details, closing sentence) → Free Writing → Note-Taking — worked example in the book is “My Favourite Hobby” (drawing).
مجازی زبان (صفحہ 8-9): (1) تشبیہ (Simile) — ”like“ یا ”as“ سے موازنہ (He is as brave as a lion)؛ (2) استعارہ (Metaphor) — بغیر ”like/as“ براہ راست موازنہ (Time is a thief)؛ (3) تجسیم (Personification) — غیر انسانی چیز کو انسانی صفت دینا (The wind whispered)؛ (4) مبالغہ (Hyperbole) — حد سے بڑھا کر بیان کرنا (I've told you a million times!)؛ (5) صوتی نقل (Onomatopoeia) — آواز کی نقل کرنے والا لفظ (sizzled)؛ (6) ہم آوازی (Alliteration) — ایک ہی آواز کی تکرار (Peter Piper picked…)؛ (7) محاورہ (Idiom) — لفظی معنی سے مختلف معنی (It's raining cats and dogs)؛ (8) تضاد (Oxymoron) — دو متضاد الفاظ ایک ساتھ (Deafening silence)۔
Honest note: this lesson itself carries no separate author biography in the book — it is presented as a lesson text, not a named author's story. The book's imprint page (p.iv) names the textbook team: Author: Mudassar Hussain Shah (English Teacher, Divisional Public School and Intermediate College, Model Town, Lahore) and Editor: Dr. Muhammad Akram (Professor of English / Principal, Govt. Graduate College, Burewala), with a Review Committee chaired by subject specialists. The book is marked “Experimental Edition” and prepared under the Updated / Revised National Curriculum of Pakistan-2023, all rights reserved with PECTAA.
For exam answers, quote the lesson (Qur'an references, Last Sermon) rather than an author — the lesson's authority is the Qur'an and Sunnah it cites.
This unit has NO separate end-of-unit 'Exercise' heading. The questions below ARE the book's own integrated practice, taken from the unit itself (book pp.6–15): Reading and Critical Thinking, Vocabulary, Oral Communication and Writing Skills tasks — with answers. Do not confuse them with any other book's exercise.
اس یونٹ میں آخر میں الگ 'ایکسرسائز' کی سرخی نہیں ہے۔ نیچے دیے گئے سوالات کتاب کی اپنی مربوط مشق ہی ہیں، اسی یونٹ سے لیے گئے ہیں (کتاب صفحہ 6-15): ریڈنگ، ووکیبلری، زبانی مہارت اور تحریری مہارت کے کام — جوابات کے ساتھ۔
Answer: Women were deprived of basic human rights and newborn girls were sometimes buried alive; orphans were exploited and left without care or protection; slaves were treated as subhuman with no rights or legal recognition, in a tribal, patriarchal society. خواتین بنیادی حقوق سے محروم تھیں اور نومولود بچیوں کو کبھی زندہ دفن کر دیا جاتا تھا؛ یتیم استحصال کا شکار اور بغیر دیکھ بھال کے تھے؛ غلاموں کو انسان سے کمتر سمجھا جاتا تھا، ان کے کوئی حقوق یا قانونی حیثیت نہ تھی — یہ ایک قبائلی، مردوں کے غلبے والا معاشرہ تھا۔
Answer: The lesson's main three are: (1) own and inherit property (Qur'an 4:7), (2) consent to marriage, (3) divorce and maintenance with financial provision (Qur'an 2:241). A fourth right the lesson adds is education and knowledge for both men and women. سبق کے اہم تین حقوق: (1) جائیداد کی ملکیت اور وراثت (قرآن 4:7)، (2) نکاح میں رضامندی، (3) طلاق اور نان نفقہ مع مالی کفالت (قرآن 2:241)۔ سبق ایک چوتھا حق بھی شامل کرتا ہے: مرد و عورت دونوں کے لیے تعلیم و علم۔
Answer: The Qur'an was the foundation and authority of the reforms. Examples: (1) Qur'an 4:7 fixed women's inheritance share; (2) Qur'an 4:6 / 4:10 made guardians accountable for orphans' property and forbade consuming it wrongfully. (Also: Qur'an 49:13 on equality, and 90:13–18 on freeing slaves.) قرآن اصلاحات کی بنیاد اور سند تھا۔ مثالیں: (1) قرآن 4:7 نے خواتین کا وراثتی حصہ مقرر کیا؛ (2) قرآن 4:6 / 4:10 نے سرپرست کو یتیم کے مال کا جوابدہ بنایا اور اسے ناحق کھانے سے منع کیا۔ (نیز: قرآن 49:13 مساوات پر، اور 90:13-18 غلام آزاد کرنے پر۔)
Answer: By making freeing a slave a highly virtuous act and an expiation for sins (Qur'an 90:13–18), by freeing many of his own slaves and encouraging others to do the same, and by gradual measures that undermined slavery's foundation — legal protection, humane treatment and the mukataba contract to earn freedom. غلام آزاد کرنے کو بہت بڑی نیکی اور کفارہ بنا کر (قرآن 90:13-18)، اپنے کئی غلام خود آزاد کر کے اور دوسروں کو ترغیب دے کر، اور بتدریج اقدامات سے — قانونی تحفظ، انسانی سلوک اور مکاتبت کے معاہدے سے آزادی کمانا — غلامی کی بنیاد کو کمزور کیا۔
Answer: He instructed Muslims to treat slaves like brothers — feed them with what you eat, clothe them as you clothe yourselves (Sahih Muslim); granted them legal protections; forbade mistreatment; and gave them the right to earn freedom through a contract (mukataba). انھوں نے مسلمانوں کو حکم دیا کہ غلاموں سے بھائیوں جیسا سلوک کریں — جو خود کھاؤ وہی انھیں کھلاؤ، جو خود پہنو وہی انھیں پہناؤ (صحیح مسلم)؛ انھیں قانونی تحفظ دیا؛ بدسلوکی سے منع کیا؛ اور مکاتبت کے معاہدے سے آزادی کمانے کا حق دیا۔
Answer: Justice, compassion, equality, human dignity and protection of the vulnerable — above all the Last Sermon's principle that no one is superior by race, colour or tribe, only by piety and good action. These remain the basis of modern human-rights and social-justice work. عدل، رحم، مساوات، انسانی وقار اور کمزوروں کا تحفظ — سب سے بڑھ کر حجۃ الوداع کا اصول کہ نسل، رنگ یا قبیلے سے کوئی فضیلت نہیں، صرف تقویٰ اور نیک عمل سے ہے۔ یہی آج انسانی حقوق اور سماجی انصاف کے کام کی بنیاد ہیں۔
Answer: 'Pummel' means to hit or beat repeatedly with force. Clues: the waves hit 'the shore with tremendous force', the wind howled, trees bent, boats rocked violently — the storm was far more than a light drizzle. ”pummel“ کا مطلب بار بار زور سے مارنا/پیٹنا ہے۔ اشارے: لہریں ”زبردست قوت سے“ ساحل سے ٹکرا رہی تھیں، ہوا چیخ رہی تھی، درخت جھک رہے تھے، کشتیاں شدت سے ہل رہی تھیں — طوفان ہلکی بوندا باندی سے کہیں زیادہ تھا۔
Answer: Idiom: 'kept her cool' — stayed calm and in control instead of panicking. Proverb: 'Nothing ventured, nothing gained' — if you take no risk, you gain nothing; Hina faced her fear and performed well. محاورہ: ”kept her cool“ — گھبرانے کے بجائے پُرسکون اور قابو میں رہنا۔ کہاوت: ”Nothing ventured, nothing gained“ — جو خطرہ مول نہ لے وہ کچھ حاصل نہیں کرتا؛ ہنا نے اپنے خوف کا سامنا کیا اور اچھی کارکردگی دکھائی۔
Answer: though = even if; however • cough = a sudden noise from the throat • rough = not smooth • enough = as much as needed • thought = an idea • through = to pass from one side to another. though = اگرچہ؛ تاہم • cough = گلے سے اچانک نکلنے والی آواز (کھانسی) • rough = کھردرا، ہموار نہیں • enough = ضرورت کے مطابق کافی • thought = ایک خیال • through = ایک طرف سے دوسری طرف گزرنا۔
Answer: (1) part-time job (2) check-in desk (3) well-deserved speech (4) mother-in-law. Rule: hyphenate a compound adjective before a noun, and hyphenated compound nouns like check-in / mother-in-law. (1) part-time job (2) check-in desk (3) well-deserved speech (4) mother-in-law۔ اصول: اسم سے پہلے مرکب صفت میں ہائیفن لگائیں، اور check-in / mother-in-law جیسے مرکب اسم میں بھی ہائیفن ہوتا ہے۔
Answer: “Yesterday, my friend and I went to the park. We saw a group of kids playing soccer and decided to join them. It was real fun and everyone was nice. After that, we walked to the ice cream shop, but it was closed. We were disappointed, but we still had a great time.” (Fixes: capital Y, 'my friend and I', past-tense verbs saw/decided/walked/was/were, 'disappointed' spelling, full stops.) ”Yesterday, my friend and I went to the park. We saw a group of kids playing soccer and decided to join them. It was real fun and everyone was nice. After that, we walked to the ice cream shop, but it was closed. We were disappointed, but we still had a great time.“ (اصلاحات: بڑا Y، ”my friend and I“، ماضی کے افعال saw/decided/walked/was/were، ”disappointed“ کی املا، مکمل اوقاف۔)
Answer: Brainstorming → Mind-Mapping → Structuring (topic sentence, supporting details, closing sentence) → Free Writing → Note-Taking. The book's worked example topic is 'My Favourite Hobby' (drawing). خیالات جمع کرنا → ذہنی نقشہ → ترتیب (موضوعی جملہ، معاون تفصیلات، اختتامی جملہ) → آزاد تحریر → نوٹس لینا۔ کتاب کی عملی مثال کا موضوع ”My Favourite Hobby“ (ڈرائنگ) ہے۔
Answer: This is a free-writing task, so there is no single printed answer. A good story applies the unit's techniques: clear characters, a kind act that changes a situation, figurative language (e.g. a simile or personification), and a closing line stating the message — kindness costs little but changes lives. Use the paragraph process above to plan it first.
This chapter explains how Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) reformed a tribal, unjust society for its most vulnerable people. It starts with the lesson summary — women, orphans and slaves before and after Islam — then the glossary, the theme of equality and dignity, figurative language and the five-step paragraph process, and finally the textbook team note. The exercise covers reading questions, vocabulary in context and writing skill, all with answers.
Revision guidance: Revise in this order: the three groups and their four/three rights first, then the five key glossary words, then the Last Sermon line on equality. The paragraph process is the part students skip — practise it once on 'My Favourite Hobby' before the exam.
