ENGLISH

Digital globalisation is the rapid expansion of digital technologies and global connectivity in the 21st century. It has transformed economies and cultures — and left a significant mark on languages, most notably English, now the dominant medium of digital communication, education, entertainment and commerce.

1. New vocabulary (neologisms): the internet created or popularized words like hashtag, selfie, unfriend, meme, and abbreviations like LOL (laugh out loud), BTW (by the way) and DM (direct message) — born from the need for speed and efficiency.

2. Blending / code-switching: English, as a global lingua franca (a bridge language between speakers of different native tongues), absorbs words like hijab, sushi, aesthetic. Online, people mix English with their native language — code-switching — producing hybrid dialects like Taglish (Tagalog + English) and Singlish (Singaporean English); the lesson also cites a Pakistani YouTuber blending Urdu into English.

3. Grammar loosened: texting, tweeting and chatting brought a relaxed approach — on character-limited Twitter, users omit articles, punctuation and capitals (“I am going to the store” → “goin 2 store”). Some call this decline; others call it creative adaptation. Emojis added a visual element, sometimes replacing words entirely — a heart or fire symbol carrying complex feelings like modern hieroglyphs.

4. Speech & culture: global media (especially YouTube) blends accents and spreads American/British slang, making English more standardised internationally — but possibly weakening regional accents. Because English dominates digital platforms, non-native speakers feel pressure to adopt it, which can marginalize local languages and push them toward decline.

Conclusion (para 10): despite concerns about purity and dominance, the overall effect is growth, change and adaptation — English is becoming a truly global language, shaped by its users rather than confined by rigid rules.

ڈیجیٹل گلوبلائزیشن اکیسویں صدی میں ڈیجیٹل ٹیکنالوجی اور عالمی رابطوں کی تیز رفتار توسیع ہے۔ اس نے معیشتوں اور ثقافتوں کو بدل دیا — اور زبانوں پر، سب سے زیادہ انگریزی پر، گہرا اثر ڈالا ہے، جو اب ڈیجیٹل رابطے، تعلیم، تفریح اور تجارت کی غالب زبان ہے۔

1. نئے الفاظ (neologisms): انٹرنیٹ نے hashtag, selfie, unfriend, meme جیسے الفاظ بنائے یا مقبول کیے، اور LOL (laugh out loud)، BTW (by the way) اور DM (direct message) جیسے مخففات دیے — جو رفتار اور کارکردگی کی ضرورت سے پیدا ہوئے۔

ENGLISH

کتاب کا Theme box (p.29): “The dynamic transformation of the English language in response to global digital communication, highlighting how technology, online culture, and cross-cultural exchange reshape vocabulary, grammar, and usage.”

Two-sided message (exam-ready): digital globalisation is both an opportunity and a challenge. Opportunity: a more inclusive, diverse English — Ghanaian, Filipino and Pakistani voices shaping the language. Challenge: pressure on non-native speakers, and the risk that smaller local languages decline or disappear if not consciously preserved. A balanced answer always gives both sides + the lesson's conclusion (growth and adaptation).

Theme: do rukhOpportunity: inclusive, diverse, user-shaped EnglishChallenge: pressure + local languages at riskConclusion: growth, change, adaptation
Theme samjho: دو رخ ایک ساتھ — موقع یہ کے English سب کو شامل کرتی ہے, خطرہ یہ کے مقامی zubanon پر دباؤ ہے; توازن ہی سمجھنا ہے.
تھیم توازن میں: موقع (شامل کرنے والی انگریزی) بمقابلہ چیلنج (مقامی زبانیں خطرے میں)۔
4. ✍️ Grammar Point + Writing Skillگرامر اور تحریری مہارت

ENGLISH

Phrases (p.32): (1) Adjectival phrase — describes a noun/pronoun, tells what kind or which one: “The book on the top shelf is mine.” (2) Prepositional phrase — begins with a preposition, ends with a noun/pronoun; acts as adjective or adverb: “She sat under the tree.” (3) Adverbial phrase — modifies a verb/adjective/adverb; tells how, when, where, why: “He ran with great speed.” Book practice: “The girl with the red scarf is my cousin” (adjectival); “We walked along the beach at sunset” (prepositional/adverbial of place-time); “He responded in a rude manner” (adverbial — how); “The house by the river” (adjectival); “They arrived after the ceremony” (adverbial — when).

Connotative vs Denotative (pp.33–34): denotative = literal dictionary meaning, objective. Connotative = emotional/cultural/personal associations — positive, negative or neutral. Examples: slim vs skinny (both denote “thin”; slim connotes attractive/positive, skinny implies underweight/negative); house vs home (house = building; home = warmth, family, comfort). Passage practice: frugal (positive: economical) vs stingy (negative: greedy); cold (negative: unwelcoming) vs cozy; bare (negative: empty) vs minimalist.

Writing — Clear, Well-Developed Paragraph (pp.36–37): components: Hook (“Imagine a world where no one talks in person anymore, just texts and emojis.”) → Lead-in sentence (connects hook to topic) → Topic sentence (“Digital technology has significantly changed the way we communicate.”) → Supporting sentences (each supports/explains/gives examples) → Closing sentence (optional). Task: select a topic and write a well-structured paragraph using all five parts. Oral skill: Partner Interview — attentive listening, standard pronunciation and intonation, then introduce your partner to the class.

QUESTIONS + ANSWERS
1. What is digital globalisation, and how is it connected to the English language?

Answer: Digital globalisation is the rapid expansion of digital technologies and global connectivity in the 21st century. It made English the dominant medium of digital communication, education, entertainment and commerce, and as English spread through digital platforms it changed in vocabulary, grammar, style and cultural identity.

2. Give examples of vocabulary that emerged through digital globalisation.

Answer: Neologisms: hashtag, selfie, unfriend, meme. Abbreviations: LOL (laugh out loud), BTW (by the way), DM (direct message). Borrowed words in global English: hijab, sushi, aesthetic. نئے الفاظ: hashtag, selfie, unfriend, meme۔ مخففات: LOL (laugh out loud)، BTW (by the way)، DM (direct message)۔ عالمی انگریزی میں جذب شدہ الفاظ: hijab, sushi, aesthetic۔

3. What is code-switching, and how does it appear in online communication?

Answer: Code-switching is mixing English with one's native language in conversation. Online it produces hybrid dialects like Taglish (Tagalog + English) and Singlish (Singaporean English), and Urdu-English blends by Pakistani creators. کوڈ سوئچنگ گفتگو میں انگریزی کو اپنی مادری زبان سے ملانا ہے۔ آن لائن اس سے Taglish (ٹیگالوگ + انگریزی) اور Singlish (سنگاپوری انگریزی) جیسی مخلوط بولیاں اور پاکستانی تخلیق کاروں کی اردو-انگریزی آمیزش بنتی ہے۔

4. How has digital communication affected traditional grammar rules?

Answer: It loosened them: texting/tweeting/chatting omit articles, punctuation and capitals to save space ('goin 2 store'), and emojis sometimes replace words entirely. Formal writing still follows traditional rules; the relaxed style is a creative adaptation to new tools.

5. What concerns does the author raise about the dominance of English on digital platforms?

Answer: Non-native speakers feel pressured to adopt English to access information, join conversations or get jobs; this marginalizes local languages, which risk decline or extinction without conscious preservation. It also raises questions of cultural dominance and inequality, and of losing regional accents.

6. Do you agree with the author's claim that English is becoming more flexible and creative due to digital globalisation?

Answer: Open/opinion question — no single printed answer. A strong answer: Yes — new words, code-switching, hybrids and emoji use show creativity and flexibility; but formal contexts still need standard grammar, so flexibility does not mean abandoning rules. (Give one example + one limit.)

7. How do emojis and memes function as a new kind of language?

Answer: They carry meaning visually: a heart or fire emoji can express complex emotions without words, acting like modern hieroglyphs; memes combine image + text to convey ideas, humour and cultural references quickly across borders. وہ بصری طور پر معنی پہنچاتے ہیں: دل یا آگ کا ایموجی الفاظ کے بغیر پیچیدہ جذبات ظاہر کر سکتا ہے، جدید ہائروگلیفس کی طرح؛ میمز تصویر + متن ملا کر خیالات، مزاح اور ثقافتی حوالے سرحدوں کے پار تیزی سے پہنچاتے ہیں۔

C. Phrases & Connotations — Identify and explain (pp.32–34)ج۔ فقرے اور تاثراتی معنی — شناخت اور وضاحت
QUESTIONS + ANSWERS
1. Identify the phrase type: 'The girl with the red scarf is my cousin.' / 'He responded in a rude manner.' / 'They arrived after the ceremony.'

Answer: 'with the red scarf' = adjectival phrase (describes 'girl', which one). 'in a rude manner' = adverbial phrase (how he responded). 'after the ceremony' = adverbial phrase (when they arrived). ”with the red scarf“ = صفتی فقرہ (”girl“ کی وضاحت، کون سی)۔ ”in a rude manner“ = متعلق فعل والا فقرہ (کیسے جواب دیا)۔ ”after the ceremony“ = متعلق فعل والا فقرہ (کب پہنچے)۔

2. What is the difference between denotative and connotative meaning? Give the slim/skinny example.

Answer: Denotative = literal dictionary meaning. Connotative = emotional/cultural associations. Slim and skinny both denote 'thin', but slim connotes attractive (positive) while skinny suggests underweight/unhealthy (negative). لفظی معنی = لغت کا سیدھا معنی۔ تاثراتی معنی = جذباتی/ثقافتی وابستگیاں۔ Slim اور skinny دونوں کا لفظی معنی ”پتلا“ ہے، مگر slim مثبت/پرکشش تاثر دیتا ہے جبکہ skinny کمزور/غیر صحت مند کا تاثر دیتا ہے (منفی)۔

3. In the old-man passage, are 'frugal' and 'stingy' positive or negative? Why?

Answer: Frugal = positive (economical, wisely saving, avoiding unnecessary expenses). Stingy = negative (greedy, never willing to spend even on things that matter). Same behaviour, opposite connotation — that is the point of the exercise.

ENGLISH

This chapter explains digital globalisation and its effect on English: new words, code-switching, relaxed grammar and blended accents. After the lesson summary come the five key glossary words, the two-sided theme (opportunity versus risk to local languages), the well-developed paragraph recipe and the author note. The exercise has reading questions, seven MCQs and phrases with connotations.

Revision guidance: Learn the five glossary words with one example each, then the four effects in order. For connotations, remember the rule used in the exercise: the same phrase can praise in one context and blame in another — always quote the context.
