Drug abuse is a growing problem in many countries, including Pakistan. It affects not only individuals but also families, schools and societies as a whole. It means the harmful or wrong use of drugs that can damage a person's health, behaviour and life — and the number of people affected is increasing every year.
What counts as abuse (para 2): using illegal drugs, or even sleeping pills or painkillers without a doctor's advice. People who become addicted find it hard to stop; their bodies and minds become dependent, damaging health and relationships.
Causes (paras 3–4): lack of awareness (young people do not fully understand the danger); curiosity; peer pressure from friends; unemployment and stress; hopelessness about the future; family problems, school pressure, emotional pain; and easy access to drugs.
Effects (paras 5–9): health — damage to brain, heart, lungs, liver and other organs, serious disease, even death from overdose; behaviour — mood swings, depression, anger, confusion, trouble at school/work, loss of interest in study or earning; families/communities — stress and sadness at home, and crime, accidents and violence in society (theft and robbery to get money for drugs), fear and insecurity. Most worrying: many users are young people — teenagers and university students who start at parties or with friends “thinking it is fun” and later cannot stop, damaging their education, health and future.
Response (paras 10–13): the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) stops smuggling and sale of illegal drugs; the government runs awareness campaigns in schools, colleges and on TV; rehabilitation centers provide medical care and counseling for recovery. But government alone cannot win: parents must talk openly, create a safe, loving home where children feel heard; teachers must watch for signs and guide with care; religious leaders, social workers and youth groups must spread awareness and support recovery. The lesson's action list: awareness programs; more treatment/rehabilitation centers; treat users with care, not hate — support, counseling, understanding; strong action against traffickers and sellers; promote sports, arts and hobbies to keep youth busy and away from harmful habits.
Conclusion (para 14): drug abuse destroys health, education, families and society, but “this problem can be solved if we work together” — government, schools, families and media united, so everyone gets “a chance to live a healthy and happy life” and Pakistan becomes better and safer.
Theme box (p.66): “The essay highlights the serious issue of drug abuse in Pakistan, especially among the youth. It explains how drug addiction harms individuals' health, education, and behaviour. The essay explores the causes of drug abuse, such as peer pressure, unemployment, and lack of awareness. It also discusses the negative impact on families and society, including increased crime and health problems. Government efforts and the role of families, schools, and communities in preventing drug abuse are emphasized. Overall, the essay calls for united action to raise awareness, provide treatment, and protect the younger generation.”
Core message for answers: no single group can solve it — government (ANF + campaigns), families (open talk, safe home), schools (awareness programs, watchful guidance), communities (support recovery, healthy alternatives). And the human rule: care, not hate for people who use drugs.
Conjunctions & Transitional Devices (p.68): Conjunctions connect words/phrases/clauses — and, but, or, so, because, although, while. Transitional devices connect paragraphs/sections smoothly — therefore, however, in addition, for instance, as a result, in contrast, on the other hand. Subordinating conjunctions connect a dependent clause (cannot stand alone) to an independent clause (can stand alone), showing cause, time, condition, contrast or purpose — because, although, since, when, if, even though, while, as, unless, before, after, so that. Book example from the contents: “He could not attend the meeting because he was sick.” Correlative conjunctions (contents, p.3): pairs like both/and, either/or, neither/nor, not/but, not only/but also.
Exam task (p.68): “How do the writer's use of conjunctions and transitional devices contribute to the clarity and persuasiveness of the essay's message on drug prevention? Explain with at least one example for each.” Strong answer: conjunctions link cause → effect inside sentences (e.g. “because” for causes, “but” for contrast between government action and its limits); transitions (“First… Second… Third…”, “In addition”, “However”, “Therefore”) order the essay — problem → causes → effects → response — so a reader follows the argument step by step and the call for united action feels logical, not just emotional.
Writing — Informative/Explanatory Texts (pp.70–71): examine and explain complex ideas; present facts clearly and logically; use structure, language and transitions; organize so each point builds on the previous one into a unified whole; avoid bias/emotional language; focus on clarity, accuracy, logical flow; use headings, paragraphs, transitions, and formatting/visuals (charts, tables) when useful; include definitions, explanations, examples and analysis. Tasks: (A) How does this essay's structure/content convey drug-abuse prevention clearly? (B) How does its organization help the reader grasp the complexity, and how could formatting/visuals help further? (C) How does the writer use facts, examples and explanations for the intended audience?
Oral skill: dialogue “The Future is Ours: A Conversation on SDGs” (Sarah & Aliya) — SDG 13 Climate Action, SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 5 Gender Equality, SDG 12 Responsible Consumption, SDG 3 Good Health, SDG 10 Reduced Inequality — then: two volunteers prepare and perform a dialogue on prevention of drugs before the class, with class questioning.
حروف عطف اور ربطی آلات (صفحہ 68): حروف عطف (Conjunctions) الفاظ/فقروں/جملوں کو جوڑتے ہیں — and, but, or, so, because, although, while۔ ربطی آلات (Transitional devices) پیراگرافوں کو ہمواری سے جوڑتے ہیں — therefore, however, in addition, for instance, as a result, in contrast, on the other hand۔ ماتحت حروف عطف (Subordinating conjunctions) منحصر جملے (اکیلا نہیں چل سکتا) کو آزاد جملے (اکیلا چل سکتا ہے) سے جوڑتے ہیں، سبب، وقت، شرط، تضاد یا مقصد ظاہر کرتے ہیں — because, although, since, when, if, even though, while, as, unless, before, after, so that۔ کتاب کی مثال: ”He could not attend the meeting because he was sick.“ جوڑی والے حروف عطف (Correlative): both/and, either/or, neither/nor, not/but, not only/but also جیسے جوڑے۔
Second…
Honest note: like Units 1–4, this lesson carries no named author or biography in the book — it is an informational essay on drug prevention. Textbook team (imprint page): Author Mudassar Hussain Shah, Editor Dr. Muhammad Akram, PECTAA, Experimental Edition, NCP-2023.
The lesson's authority in answers comes from its facts and institutions: the ANF, rehabilitation centers, and the lesson's own cause→effect→response structure — not from an author's name.
Questions below ARE the book's own practice from this unit (book pp.67–71): Reading and Critical Thinking questions and the unit's own MCQs — with answers. Prevention content only.
Answer: The harmful or wrong use of drugs that damages a person's health, behaviour and life. For individuals: organ damage, disease, overdose death, mood swings, depression, school/work trouble. For society: family stress and sadness, crime, accidents, violence, fear and insecurity in communities.
Answer: Lack of awareness; curiosity; peer pressure from friends; unemployment and stress; hopelessness about the future; family problems, school pressure, emotional pain; and easy access to drugs.
Answer: Health: damages brain, heart, lungs, liver and other organs; serious diseases; death from overdose. Behaviour: mood swings, depression, anger, confusion; trouble at school or work; loss of interest in studying or earning a living.
Answer: Because teenagers and university students are especially at risk: they may start at parties or with friends 'thinking it is fun', then become addicted and cannot stop — damaging their education, health and future at the very stage when those are being built.
Answer: Through the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) stopping smuggling and sale of illegal drugs; awareness campaigns in schools, colleges and on TV; opening more treatment/rehabilitation centers; and strong action against traffickers and sellers.
Answer: Families: talk openly about dangers, create a safe, loving home where children feel heard and supported. Schools: run awareness programs, watch for signs of use, guide students with care and kindness, and promote sports, arts and hobbies.
Answer: Health damage (brain, heart, lungs, liver), disease and overdose death; behaviour problems (depression, anger, confusion, school/work failure); family stress and sadness; community crime, accidents, violence, fear and insecurity.
Answer: Centers where people go to get help against addiction. They provide medical care and counseling to help people recover, and the lesson adds: users should be treated with care, not hate — support, counseling and understanding.
Correct answer: (c) harmful use of drugs. (c)
Answer: Teenagers and university students — young people. The lesson states (para 8): 'many drug users are young people. Teenagers and university students are especially at risk.'
Correct answer: (c) peer pressure (with lack of awareness and curiosity as the other leading causes in the lesson). (c)
Correct answer: (b) brain damage (also heart, lungs, liver damage; disease; overdose death). (b)
Correct answer: (c) rehabilitation center. (c)
This chapter is the lesson on drug abuse: what it is, what causes it, what it damages, and how it is fought — ANF enforcement, awareness campaigns, care-based recovery and healthy alternatives like sports and arts. It covers the prevention glossary, the theme of united action with care not hate, conjunctions and transitions, and the author note. The exercise has reading questions and four MCQs.
Revision guidance: Learn the prevention chain in order and the difference between punishment and rehabilitation — that distinction is the lesson's moral centre. Conjunctions are best revised by sorting the exercise examples into coordinating, subordinating and correlative.
