Stanza 1: “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, / And sorry I could not travel both / And be one traveler, long I stood / And looked down one as far as I could / To where it bent in the undergrowth.” A traveler in an autumn (yellow) wood faces a fork: he is one person, he cannot take both roads, so he stands long, looking down one road as far as sight allows.
Stanza 2: “Then took the other, as just as fair, / And having perhaps the better claim, / Because it was grassy and wanted wear; / Though as for that the passing there / Had worn them really about the same.” He takes the second road — just as fair, perhaps with the better claim because it is grassy and less worn — though honestly, passing feet have worn both roads “really about the same”.
Stanza 3: “And both that morning equally lay / In leaves no step had trodden black. / Oh, I kept the first for another day! / Yet knowing how way leads on to way, / I doubted if I should ever come back.” Both roads lie fresh under untrodden leaves that morning. He tells himself he will keep the first road for another day — yet he knows how one way leads to another, and doubts he will ever return.
Stanza 4: “I shall be telling this with a sigh / Somewhere ages and ages hence: / Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — / I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference.” Far in the future, he will retell this choice “with a sigh”: he took the road less traveled, and that choice made all the difference to his life.
Reading note: the poem is subtler than its famous last line: the roads were actually “about the same”, and the speaker himself admits the difference may be a story he will tell later. The sigh may be regret, nostalgia, or satisfaction — the poem does not settle it, and exam answers should say so.
بند 1: ”Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, / And sorry I could not travel both / And be one traveler, long I stood / And looked down one as far as I could / To where it bent in the undergrowth.“ خزاں (زرد) جنگل میں ایک مسافر دو راستوں کے موڑ پر کھڑا ہے: وہ ایک شخص ہے، دونوں راستے اختیار نہیں کر سکتا، اس لیے دیر تک کھڑا رہتا ہے، ایک راستے کو جہاں تک نظر جاتی ہے، جہاں وہ جھاڑیوں میں مڑتا ہے، دیکھتا ہے۔
بند 2: ”Then took the other, as just as fair, / And having perhaps the better claim, / Because it was grassy and wanted wear; / Though as for that the passing there / Had worn them really about the same.“ وہ دوسرا راستہ لیتا ہے — اتنا ہی خوبصورت، شاید بہتر دعوے والا کیونکہ وہ گھاس والا ہے اور کم استعمال شدہ ہے — حالانکہ سچ یہ ہے کہ گزرنے والوں نے دونوں راستوں کو ”واقعی تقریباً یکساں“ گھسا دیا ہے۔
بند 3: ”And both that morning equally lay / In leaves no step had trodden black. / Oh, I kept the first for another day! / Yet knowing how way leads on to way, / I doubted if I should ever come back.“ اس صبح دونوں راستے پتوں میں یکساں بچھے ہیں جن پر کسی قدم نے سیاہ نشان نہیں چھوڑا۔ وہ خود سے کہتا ہے کہ پہلا راستہ کسی اور دن کے لیے رکھے گا — مگر وہ جانتا ہے کہ ایک راستہ دوسرے راستے کی طرف لے جاتا ہے، اور شک کرتا ہے کہ وہ کبھی واپس آئے گا۔
بند 4: ”I shall be telling this with a sigh / Somewhere ages and ages hence: / Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — / I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference.“ بہت آگے مستقبل میں وہ اس انتخاب کو ”آہ کے ساتھ“ دوبارہ سنائے گا: اس نے کم اختیار کیا گیا راستہ لیا، اور اس انتخاب نے اس کی زندگی میں سب فرق ڈال دیا۔
Theme box (p.92): “The theme of ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost centers around choices and the consequences of those choices in life. The poem explores the idea that decisions, whether big or small, shape our futures in the ways we may not always understand at the time. It reflects on the tension between the desire to take an unconventional path (the ‘road less traveled’) and the realization that every choice leads to a different outcome. It also delves into regret and reflection, as the speaker wonders how their life might have been different if they had made the other choice, while ultimately recognizing that the choices we make define us in unique ways.”
Two readings to mention together: (1) the popular reading — be brave, take the less-traveled road, and it makes all the difference; (2) the poem's own evidence — the roads were equally worn, the speaker kept the first “for another day” knowing he would likely never return, and the final sigh is ambiguous. A top answer holds both: choices define us, but we retell them later as more decisive than they felt at the time.
Sentence patterns & complex sentences (pp.97–98): Simple sentence — “The speaker stood at the fork in the road.” Compound sentence — “The speaker wanted to take both roads, but he could only choose one.” Complex sentence — “Because the two roads looked equally worn, the speaker found it hard to decide.” A complex sentence combines a main clause (complete idea) with one or more subordinate clauses (dependent ideas), using transitional devices (because, although, however, therefore) and correct punctuation. Book example: “Although both roads looked equally worn, the speaker chose the one he thought was less traveled.” Complex paragraph model: “In ‘The Road Not Taken,’ the speaker faces a difficult choice, since both paths seem equally inviting. Although he wishes he could explore both, he understands he must choose only one. Therefore, he selects the road that appears less worn, realizing that this decision might shape his life forever.” Tasks: write simple/compound/complex sentences about the speaker; join two poem ideas with “but” or “although”; explain main vs subordinate clause; write a complex sentence for why the speaker sighed.
Summary, inference, integration (pp.94–97): Summarizing = restating important ideas in simpler, shorter form by paraphrasing in your own words, with correct sentence structure, transitional devices (however, therefore, in addition) and proper punctuation. Book's summary of the poem: the speaker chooses between two paths, realizing his decision will shape his life, with uncertainty about the road not taken. Making inferences = using contextual clues, writer's viewpoint and implied information to draw logical conclusions (“reading between the lines”). Book example: “I shall be telling this with a sigh” → inference: regret/nostalgia and mixed feelings, though regret is never directly stated. Interpreting/integrating sources: combine text with maps, graphs, charts, diagrams — e.g. two roads splitting, arrows from “choices” to “outcomes” — to see that small decisions have big impacts. Oral skill: “The Roads We Choose” — pairs ask 3–5 questions about life choices (a two-choice dilemma, wondering about the other choice, easy vs challenging path, one decision that made a big difference).
Writing — Book Review, Precis, Paraphrase, Objective Summary (pp.99–102): a book review has: (a) Introduction (title, author, genre, overview); (b) Summary (concise plot/characters/setting, no spoilers); (c) Analysis (writing style, themes, character development, pacing, emotional impact); (d) Opinion (what you liked/disliked and why); (e) Conclusion (overall thoughts + recommendation). Book's model review of this poem: introduction (classic poem on life's choices), summary (fork, two appealing paths, less-traveled choice shaping the future), analysis (“yellow wood” imagery, simple yet powerful structure), opinion (thought-provoking and relatable; the regret at the end detracts from the hopeful message), conclusion (poignant exploration of decision-making; recommended to readers who enjoy reflective poetry). Precis: main idea + essential details, own words, tone and logical flow preserved, no unnecessary details. Book's precis of stanza 1: “In the poem, the speaker faces a choice between two equally appealing paths in the woods. He regrets not being able to take both, but after considering his options, he chooses the one less traveled.” Paraphrase: restate in own words, changing structure/vocabulary but not message, keeping tone/imagery/theme — e.g. “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood…” → “The speaker finds himself at a crossroads in a forest, feeling regretful that he cannot take both paths.” Task: paraphrase “I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference” (sample: “I chose the path fewer people had taken, and that choice changed everything in my life.”). Objective summary: only main ideas, no personal opinions or excessive detail.
جملوں کی ساخت اور پیچیدہ جملے (صفحہ 97-98): سادہ جملہ — ”The speaker stood at the fork in the road.“ مرکب جملہ — ”The speaker wanted to take both roads, but he could only choose one.“ پیچیدہ جملہ — ”Because the two roads looked equally worn, the speaker found it hard to decide.“ پیچیدہ جملہ اہم جز (main clause) (مکمل خیال) کو ایک یا زیادہ ماتحت اجزا (subordinate clauses) (منحصر خیالات) سے ملاتا ہے، ربطی آلات (because, although, however, therefore) اور درست اوقاف کے ساتھ۔ کتاب کی مثال: ”Although both roads looked equally worn, the speaker chose the one he thought was less traveled.“ پیچیدہ پیراگراف کا نمونہ: ”In ‘The Road Not Taken,’ the speaker faces a difficult choice, since both paths seem equally inviting. Although he wishes he could explore both, he understands he must choose only one. Therefore, he selects the road that appears less worn, realizing that this decision might shape his life forever.“ کام: مقرر کے بارے میں سادہ/مرکب/پیچیدہ جملے لکھیں؛ نظم کے دو خیالات کو ”but“ یا ”although“ سے جوڑیں؛ اہم اور ماتحت جز کا فرق بتائیں؛ مقرر کی آہ کی وجہ پر پیچیدہ جملہ لکھیں۔
He regrets not being able to take both, but after considering his options, he chooses the one less traveled.“ دوبارہ بیان (Paraphrase): اپنے الفاظ میں دوبارہ بیان، ساخت/الفاظ بدل کر مگر پیغام نہیں، لہجہ/تصویر/موضوع برقرار — مثلاً ”Two roads diverged in a yellow wood…“ → ”The speaker finds himself at a crossroads in a forest, feeling regretful that he cannot take both paths.“ کام: ”I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference“ کا دوبارہ بیان کریں (نمونہ: ”I chose the path fewer people had taken, and that choice changed everything in my life.“)۔ معروضی خلاصہ: صرف اہم خیالات، کوئی ذاتی رائے یا زیادہ تفصیل نہیں۔
The book credits the poem to Robert Frost on the unit title page (p.91). The unit itself gives no biography of Frost — no dates, life details or other works are printed in this unit, so none are invented here.
What the book DOES give is the poem's theme, glossary, and a full model book review of the poem (see Sections 3–4). In exam answers, name the poet as Robert Frost and support claims with poem lines (yellow wood, grassy/wanted wear, sigh, less traveled) — not with outside biography.
Questions below ARE the book's own practice from this unit (book pp.93–102): Reading and Critical Thinking questions, the unit's own MCQs, explain-with-reference-to-context, summary, inference, diagram and book-review/precis tasks — with answers.
نیچے دیے گئے سوالات کتاب کی اپنی مشق ہیں، اسی یونٹ سے (کتاب صفحہ 93-102): ریڈنگ اور تنقیدی سوچ کے سوالات، یونٹ کے اپنے MCQs، سیاق کے حوالے سے وضاحت، خلاصہ، استنباط، خاکہ اور کتاب تبصرہ/خلاصہ کے کام — جوابات کے ساتھ۔
Answer: At a fork in a yellow wood — two roads diverged, and he, one traveler, cannot travel both. زرد جنگل میں دو راستوں کے موڑ پر — دو راستے جدا ہوئے، اور وہ، ایک مسافر، دونوں پر سفر نہیں کر سکتا۔
Answer: Because he is one traveler: choosing one road means giving up the other, and he wants to experience both — the regret of a forced choice. کیونکہ وہ ایک مسافر ہے: ایک راستہ چننے کا مطلب دوسرے کو چھوڑنا ہے، اور وہ دونوں کا تجربہ کرنا چاہتا ہے — مجبوری کے انتخاب کا افسوس۔
Answer: The first is the one he looks down as far as sight allows, to where it bends in the undergrowth. The second is 'as just as fair', grassy and wanting wear — but honestly, passing has worn them 'really about the same', and both that morning lie equally under untrodden leaves.
Answer: He kept the first road 'for another day', but he knows how 'way leads on to way' — one choice leads to further choices and a new life — so he doubts he will ever return to take the road he left. اس نے پہلا راستہ ”کسی اور دن کے لیے“ رکھا، مگر وہ جانتا ہے کہ ”ایک راستہ دوسرے راستے کی طرف لے جاتا ہے“ — ایک انتخاب مزید انتخاب اور نئی زندگی کی طرف لے جاتا ہے — اس لیے اسے شک ہے کہ وہ کبھی واپس آ کر چھوڑا ہوا راستہ لے گا۔
Answer: As comfort and self-persuasion: it softens the pain of choosing — he tells himself the choice is not final, even while knowing it almost certainly is. It is a very human excuse for a hard decision. تسلی اور خود کو قائل کرنے کے طور پر: یہ انتخاب کی تکلیف کو نرم کرتا ہے — وہ خود سے کہتا ہے کہ انتخاب حتمی نہیں، حالانکہ وہ جانتا ہے کہ تقریباً یقینی طور پر یہ حتمی ہے۔ یہ مشکل فیصلے کے لیے ایک بہت انسانی بہانہ ہے۔
Answer: A sigh — mixed feelings: pride in taking the less-traveled road, plus regret/nostalgia for the road not taken, plus wonder at how one choice 'made all the difference'. The poem leaves the sigh ambiguous on purpose. آہ — ملے جلے جذبات: کم اختیار کیے گئے راستے کو لینے پر فخر، اور نہ لیے گئے راستے کے لیے افسوس/یاد، اور حیرت کہ ایک انتخاب نے ”سب فرق ڈال دیا“۔ نظم جان بوجھ کر آہ کو مبہم چھوڑتی ہے۔
Correct answer: (a) forest (a yellow wood). (a) جنگل (زرد جنگل)۔
Correct answer: (b) yellow. (b) زرد۔
Correct answer: (b) sorry ('And sorry I could not travel both'). (b) افسوس (”And sorry I could not travel both“)۔
Correct answer: (c) less-traveled ('I took the one less traveled by'). (c) کم اختیار کیا گیا (”I took the one less traveled by“)۔
Correct answer: (b) leaves ('In leaves no step had trodden black'). (b) پتے (”In leaves no step had trodden black“)۔
Correct answer: (a) return ('I doubted if I should ever come back'). (a) واپس آنا (”I doubted if I should ever come back“)۔
Correct answer: (b) emotional — the book's key is emotional: the roads symbolize life choices and their felt consequences (the journey is a life journey, felt emotionally). (b) جذباتی — کتاب کی کلید جذباتی ہے: راستے زندگی کے انتخاب اور ان کے محسوس شدہ نتائج کی علامت ہیں (سفر زندگی کا سفر ہے، جذباتی طور پر محسوس کیا گیا)۔
Correct answer: (b) deciding (he 'long stood' and considered before choosing). (b) فیصلہ کرنا (وہ ”دیر تک کھڑا“ رہا اور چننے سے پہلے غور کیا)۔
Correct answer: (b) sigh ('I shall be telling this with a sigh'). (b) آہ بھرنا (”I shall be telling this with a sigh“)۔
Correct answer: (c) life. (c) زندگی۔
Answer: Context: stanza 3, at the fork in the yellow wood. Meaning: that morning both roads looked equally fresh and untouched — no footstep had blackened the leaves — so the choice was not really between a worn and an unworn road. The speaker comforts himself that he will take the first road another day, but he already knows life does not work that way: each road leads onward to new roads, so return is almost impossible. The lines expose the self-deception inside a hard choice.
Answer: He chooses the second road — the one that looks grassy and less traveled — over the first, knowing the decision will shape his future, while still wondering about the road he did not take. وہ دوسرا راستہ چنتا ہے — جو گھاس والا اور کم اختیار کیا گیا لگتا ہے — پہلے پر، یہ جانتے ہوئے کہ یہ فیصلہ اس کے مستقبل کو شکل دے گا، جبکہ نہ لیے گئے راستے کے بارے میں سوچتا رہتا ہے۔
Answer: Copying is not understanding: paraphrasing proves you grasped the meaning, avoids plagiarism, and forces you to shorten and clarify — a summary must be simpler, shorter and well-organized, with correct structure, transitions and punctuation. نقل کرنا سمجھنا نہیں ہے: اپنے الفاظ میں بیان کرنا ثابت کرتا ہے کہ آپ نے معنی سمجھا ہے، سرقے سے بچاتا ہے، اور آپ کو مختصر و واضح کرنے پر مجبور کرتا ہے — خلاصہ سادہ، مختصر اور منظم ہونا چاہیے، درست ساخت، ربط اور اوقاف کے ساتھ۔
Answer: Mixed feelings: the sigh implies regret and nostalgia for the other road, even as he claims the choice 'made all the difference'. The poem never says directly that he regrets it — the sigh and reflective tone imply it. That is reading between the lines. ملے جلے جذبات: آہ دوسرے راستے کے لیے افسوس اور یاد کا اشارہ دیتی ہے، حالانکہ وہ دعویٰ کرتا ہے کہ انتخاب نے ”سب فرق ڈال دیا“۔ نظم کبھی براہ راست نہیں کہتی کہ اسے افسوس ہے — آہ اور غور و فکر والا لہجہ اس کا اشارہ دیتا ہے۔ یہی سطروں کے درمیان پڑھنا ہے۔
Answer: Life choices often look equal at the time (both roads 'really about the same'), yet they lead to different lives; a single decision, once taken, leads on to further decisions ('way leads on to way'), so choices — even small-seeming ones — shape a person's future in ways only visible 'ages and ages hence'.
Answer: The quiet path matches the 'less traveled' road. A flowchart (fork → choice → outcomes) or a map/diagram shows the decision process step by step and makes the abstract theme concrete: choices branch, outcomes differ, and small differences at the fork grow into different lives. Symbols for a diagram: yellow wood, fork, leaves, two arrows, a sigh, 'ages hence'.
Answer: Introduction (title, author, genre, overview); Summary (concise plot/characters/setting, no spoilers); Analysis (writing style, themes, character development, pacing, emotional impact); Opinion (liked/disliked and why); Conclusion (overall thoughts + recommendation). Summary tells what happens; analysis evaluates how and why it works and what it means.
Answer: Sample paraphrase: 'I chose the path that fewer people had taken, and that choice changed everything in my life.' (Keeps meaning, tone of reflection, and the theme of choice; changes structure and vocabulary.)
This chapter is Frost's 'The Road Not Taken': a traveller at a fork in a yellow wood takes the road less travelled by — or so he will claim, sighing, ages hence. It covers the poem's four stanzas, the glossary, the theme of choices and retelling, three sentence types, and the note that the book prints no biography of Frost. The exercise is the longest in the book: reading questions, ten MCQs, reference-to-context, and summary, inference, integration, book review and precis.
Revision guidance: Read the four stanzas in order and hold on to the honest twist: both roads were really alike, so the 'difference' is in the retelling. Give the reference-to-context answers in three steps — reference, context, explanation — and do not skip part D; it carries the most practice.
