The War of Independence 1857 was the last major attempt by Indians to end British rule. After its failure, the British held Muslims especially responsible, took away their lands and jobs, and closed doors of government service to them.
Muslims also refused to learn English and modern sciences, fearing loss of faith, so they fell behind Hindus in education and jobs. This backwardness made the revival of Muslims the great challenge of the next fifty years.
Two revival movements arose: Shah Waliullah's reform movement (earlier, stressing return to pure Islam) and the Faraizi Movement of Haji Shariatullah in Bengal, which fought un-Islamic customs and the oppression of Hindu landlords over Muslim tenants.
Sir Syed Ahmed Khan (1817–1898) believed Muslims could progress only through modern education. He founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in 1875 (later Aligarh Muslim University), combining Western science with Islamic education.
He advised Muslims to stay loyal to the British for the time being, learn English, and avoid joining Congress, whose policies he saw as harmful to Muslim interests. His Two-Nation idea — that Hindus and Muslims are two nations — became the seed of the Pakistan Movement.
Other leaders carried the work forward: Mohsin-ul-Mulk, Viqar-ul-Mulk and the Deoband school, which protected religious education.
In 1906, a Muslim deputation led by Sir Agha Khan met the Viceroy at Dhaka and demanded separate electorates. The same year, the All-India Muslim League was founded at Dhaka, with Mohsin-ul-Mulk as a key organiser.
The Minto–Morley Reforms (1909) accepted separate electorates for Muslims — Muslims would vote only for Muslim candidates. This was the first legal recognition of Muslims as a separate political community.
In 1916, the League and Congress signed the Lucknow Pact: Congress accepted separate electorates, and both demanded self-government. Jinnah, then in both parties, was called the ambassador of Hindu–Muslim unity.
After World War I, Muslims launched the Khilafat Movement (1919–1924) to protect the Ottoman Caliphate, and Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement joined it. Hindu–Muslim unity reached a peak, but collapsed after the movements ended.
In 1928, the Nehru Report rejected separate electorates and Muslim demands. Jinnah answered with his Fourteen Points (1929): federal constitution, provincial autonomy, separate electorates, one-third Muslim representation in the central legislature, and protection of Muslim culture and religion.
The Fourteen Points became the charter of Muslim demands and the basis of later negotiations.
1930: Iqbal's Allahabad address proposed a Muslim state in the north-west. 1930–32: Jinnah attended the Round Table Conferences in London, where he defended Muslim rights.
1937–39: Under the 1935 Act, Congress formed ministries in Hindu-majority provinces. Its policies — Bande Matram, Hindi promotion, and interference in Muslim affairs — convinced Muslims that Congress rule meant Hindu rule. The League's Pirpur Report recorded these grievances.
23 March 1940: At the League's Lahore session, the Lahore Resolution (Pakistan Resolution) demanded independent states in Muslim-majority areas of the north-west and north-east, where Muslims could live by Islam. 23 March is now Pakistan Day.
1942: The Cripps Mission failed; Congress launched Quit India, while the League stayed out and gained strength. 1945–46 elections: the League won almost all Muslim seats, proving it was the sole representative of Muslims.
1946: The Cabinet Mission Plan proposed a loose federation; the League accepted it first, but Congress's reservations killed it. Direct Action Day (16 August 1946) was followed by communal violence.
3 June 1947: The Mountbatten Plan announced partition into two states. The Indian Independence Act followed, and Pakistan came into being on 14 August 1947, with Jinnah as Governor-General and Liaquat Ali Khan as Prime Minister.

After 1857, Sir Syed saw that Muslims were ruined educationally and politically. He founded MAO College Aligarh (1875) for modern education, advised loyalty to the British and avoidance of Congress, and first used the word 'nation' for Muslims after the Urdu–Hindi controversy (1867). His Two-Nation idea and Aligarh graduates later led the Muslim League and the Pakistan Movement.
