Provenance / ماخذ نوٹ: This revised chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 10 Pakistan Studies. No official Class 10 Pakistan Studies textbook was on disk during preparation, so no official-book page numbers are claimed. The questions at the end are SLO / board-pattern practice questions from the library chapter — they are not presented as the book's official exercise. Answers follow the chapter explanations above; cross-check wording with your printed textbook before exams.
Foreign policy is how a country deals with other countries. Pakistan's foreign policy, guided by Quaid-e-Azam's principles, rests on: friendship with all, non-interference in others' affairs, support for the UN Charter, peaceful settlement of disputes, and support for oppressed peoples (especially Kashmiris and Palestinians).
Objectives: protect sovereignty and territorial integrity; promote economic development through trade and aid; strengthen defence through friendly relations; project Pakistan's Islamic identity; and play a role in regional and world peace.
Foreign policy is made by the government (Foreign Office, Prime Minister, Parliament) but shaped by geography, economy, security threats and world politics.
Kashmir is the core dispute between Pakistan and India. Kashmir is Muslim-majority, but its Hindu ruler acceded to India in 1947 against the wishes of the people. The UN passed resolutions for a plebiscite (free vote) which India never held.
Pakistan and India fought wars in 1948, 1965, 1971 and 1999 (Kargil). The Simla Agreement (1972) and Lahore Declaration (1999) tried to settle disputes peacefully, but India's revocation of Kashmir's special status in August 2019 created a new crisis.
Pakistan's stand: Kashmiris must get their right of self-determination under UN resolutions; peace in South Asia is impossible without solving Kashmir.
China: Pakistan's closest friend — 'higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the oceans'. China helped build the Karakoram Highway, nuclear and defence projects, and now CPEC. China supports Pakistan on Kashmir.
Afghanistan: a Muslim neighbour with shared history, language and tribes. Relations faced strains over the Durand Line, refugees (millions since 1979) and terrorism, but Pakistan seeks a peaceful, stable Afghanistan.
Iran: the first country to recognise Pakistan (1947); cooperation in trade, energy and border security. Muslim world: Pakistan has close ties with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, UAE and others, and supports Muslim causes (Kashmir, Palestine) in the OIC.
United States: Pakistan joined US-led alliances in the 1950s (SEATO, CENTO) and was a frontline partner in the Afghan war (1979–89) and the war on terrorism after 2001. Relations have swung between close cooperation and mistrust over Afghanistan and aid.
Russia (former USSR): relations were cold during the Cold War (Pakistan was in the Western camp), but improved after 2000 with trade, energy talks and military exercises.
Lesson: Pakistan's policy has been to keep working relations with all major powers while protecting its own interests — neither permanent friends nor permanent enemies, only permanent interests.
United Nations (member since 1947): Pakistan supports the UN Charter, contributes large numbers of peacekeeping troops (among the world's top contributors), and raises Kashmir at the UN every year.
OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation): Pakistan hosted the 1974 Islamic Summit at Lahore and works for Muslim unity, Kashmir and Palestine.
SAARC (South Asian Association, 1985): regional cooperation, weakened by India–Pakistan tensions. ECO (Economic Cooperation Organisation): trade with Iran, Turkey and Central Asia. SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, member since 2017): security and economic cooperation with China, Russia and Central Asia.
CPEC (China–Pakistan Economic Corridor, launched 2015) is the flagship of China's Belt and Road: roads, railways, energy projects and the Gwadar Port linking western China to the Arabian Sea. It brings investment, jobs and energy to Pakistan, and gives China a shorter trade route.
Benefits and challenges: new motorways, power plants ending load-shedding, Gwadar's development — but also debt concerns, security of projects, and the need for local jobs and skills.
Peace role: Pakistan has hosted Afghan peace talks, contributes to UN peacekeeping, and advocates dialogue over war in Kashmir, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Note: These are SLO / board-pattern practice questions for revision. They are not the book's official exercise. Answers follow the chapter explanations above; where an answer is derived from the chapter summary it is labelled as a chapter-based answer in the summary section.

Kashmir is Muslim-majority; its Hindu ruler acceded to India in 1947 against the people's wishes. India promised a plebiscite under UN resolutions but never held it. Wars (1948, 1965, 1999) and agreements (Tashkent 1966, Simla 1972, Lahore 1999) failed to solve it. In August 2019 India revoked Kashmir's special status. Pakistan demands self-determination for Kashmiris under UN resolutions and calls Kashmir the core issue for South Asian peace.
China is Pakistan's closest friend and strategic partner: it helped build the Karakoram Highway, supported defence and nuclear programmes, backs Pakistan on Kashmir, and is investing billions through CPEC (roads, energy, Gwadar Port). The friendship, described as higher than the Himalayas and deeper than the oceans, gives Pakistan economic support and China a trade route to the Arabian Sea.
Protect sovereignty (Kashmir stand, nuclear deterrence); promote economic development (CPEC, trade with China, Gulf states); keep friendly relations with all powers (USA, China, Russia, Muslim world); support international peace (UN peacekeeping, Afghan peace talks); and defend Muslim causes (Kashmir, Palestine in OIC and UN).
