Provenance / ماخذ نوٹ: This revised chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 10 Pakistan Studies. No official Class 10 Pakistan Studies textbook was on disk during preparation, so no official-book page numbers are claimed. The questions at the end are SLO / board-pattern practice questions from the library chapter — they are not presented as the book's official exercise. Answers follow the chapter explanations above; cross-check wording with your printed textbook before exams.
Land: fertile plains of Punjab and Sindh grow wheat, cotton, rice and sugarcane. Water: the Indus system irrigates about 80% of farmland. Minerals: coal (Thar, huge reserves), natural gas (Sui, discovered 1952), oil, limestone, gypsum, salt (Khewra, the world's second-largest salt mine), copper and gold (Reko Diq, Balochistan).
Energy resources: hydel (Tarbela, Mangla), thermal, solar and wind potential (Sindh's wind corridor, solar in Punjab and Balochistan). Forests and fisheries: timber from the north, fish from the Arabian Sea and the Indus.
Problem: resources are rich but under-used — mining is small-scale, energy demand exceeds supply, and water is wasted. Proper use needs investment, technology and training.
Agriculture employs about 37% of the labour force and provides raw material for industry (cotton for textiles, sugarcane for sugar). Main crops: food crops — wheat (staple food), rice, maize; cash crops — cotton, sugarcane; plus pulses, oilseeds, fruits (mango, citrus) and vegetables.
Two cropping seasons: Kharif (summer: cotton, rice, sugarcane, sown April–June) and Rabi (winter: wheat, gram, sown October–December). Livestock (cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats) gives milk, meat and hides, and supports rural incomes.
Problems: small landholdings, water shortage, costly inputs, low use of modern methods, and marketing problems. Solutions: better seeds, fertilisers, credit, storage, and water management.
Major industries: textiles (largest export earner, Faisalabad and Karachi centres), sugar, cement, fertiliser, steel (Pakistan Steel Mills, Karachi), sports goods (Sialkot), surgical instruments (Sialkot), and leather.
Importance: industry provides jobs, earns foreign exchange, uses farm raw material, reduces imports, and raises living standards. Small and cottage industries (carpets, embroidery, pottery) employ millions, especially women, in homes and villages.
Problems: energy shortage, high costs, outdated machines, lack of skilled workers, and political instability. CPEC's special economic zones aim to attract new industry.
Exports: textiles, rice, leather goods, sports goods, surgical instruments, fruits. Imports: petroleum, machinery, chemicals, edible oil, tea. Pakistan usually imports more than it exports (trade deficit), covered partly by remittances from overseas Pakistanis.
Transport: roads (motorways: Lahore–Islamabad, Karachi–Hyderabad), railways (Karachi–Peshawar main line), ports (Karachi, Port Qasim, Gwadar) and airports (Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad). Good transport lowers costs and links farms to markets.
Communication: mobile phones, internet and media have transformed business, education and banking — but rural areas still lag in coverage.
Pakistan's energy demand grows faster than supply, causing load-shedding that harms industry, farming and daily life. Causes: dependence on imported oil, circular debt, line losses and theft, and delayed dams.
Solutions in progress: hydel dams (Diamer-Bhasha), coal power (Thar), solar and wind projects, and CPEC energy plants that added thousands of megawatts. Conservation — LED lights, efficient fans, less wastage — also helps.
Development planning: five-year plans and now the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) fund roads, dams, schools and hospitals; the goal is sustained growth with lower poverty.
Main problems: poverty and unemployment, inflation (rising prices), trade deficit, foreign debt, low tax collection, rapid population growth, and energy shortage. Floods and climate change add new shocks.
Way forward: increase exports (value-added textiles, IT services), use Thar coal and Reko Diq minerals, build dams and water storage, train skilled workers, document the economy and widen the tax net, and support small business and women entrepreneurs.
Exam point: development is not only GDP growth — it also means better health, education, clean water and equal opportunities for all citizens.
Note: These are SLO / board-pattern practice questions for revision. They are not the book's official exercise. Answers follow the chapter explanations above; where an answer is derived from the chapter summary it is labelled as a chapter-based answer in the summary section.
