A wave is a travelling disturbance that carries energy from one place to another without carrying matter with it. From a rope wave to an earthquake, and from sound to light, this chapter explains the kinds of waves, their key terms, and the wave equation v = fλ.
A wave is a disturbance that travels through a medium or through space and transfers energy without transferring matter. Shake one end of a rope and a wave runs along it, but each bit of rope only moves up and down in place. Waves that need a medium are called mechanical waves (sound, water waves, seismic waves); waves that do not need a medium are electromagnetic waves (light, radio waves, X-rays). A wavefront is a line (or surface) joining points that vibrate in phase.
In a transverse wave, particles vibrate at right angles to the direction the wave travels. The high points are crests and the low points are troughs — a rope wave and a light wave are transverse. In a longitudinal wave, particles vibrate along the same direction as the wave, producing regions of compression (crowded particles) and rarefaction (spread-out particles) — sound is longitudinal. Mechanical waves can be either kind; electromagnetic waves are always transverse.
The amplitude is the maximum displacement from the rest position; a bigger amplitude means the wave carries more energy. The wavelength λ is the distance between two neighbouring crests (or compressions). The frequency f is the number of waves passing a point per second, measured in hertz (Hz), and the time period T is the time for one complete wave, with T = 1/f. Since a wave travels one wavelength in one period, its speed is v = fλ — the wave equation. Example: a wave generator making 600 waves in 3 minutes has f = 600/180 = 3.33 Hz, so at 2 m s⁻¹ its wavelength is 2/3.33 = 0.60 m.
An earthquake releases energy as seismic waves that travel through the Earth. P-waves (primary) are longitudinal and the fastest, so they arrive first; S-waves (secondary) are transverse and slower, and they cannot travel through liquids, which tells scientists that part of Earth's core is liquid. Surface waves travel along the ground last and cause most of the shaking damage. Seismographs record these waves, and the time gap between P and S arrivals tells how far away the earthquake happened.
These are تھے official exercise questions of PECTAA Class 10 Physics, Chapter 12 (Waves), with answers.
1. The direction of vibration in a longitudinal wave is:
Answer: In a longitudinal wave particles vibrate parallel to the wave's travel.
2. Which part of a transverse wave carry the lowest point?
Answer: The trough is the lowest point; the crest is the highest.
3. Which of the following wave type requires a medium to travel?
Answer: Sound is a mechanical wave, so it needs a medium; the others are electromagnetic.
4. The property of a wave which indicates how much energy it carries is:
Answer: Energy carried rises with amplitude (in fact with amplitude squared).
5. A wave front is:
Answer: A wavefront joins all points vibrating in the same phase.
6. A wave generator produces 600 waves in 3 minutes, and each wave travels at 2 metres per second. What is the wavelength of the wave?
Answer: f = 600/180 = 3.33 Hz, so λ = v/f = 2/3.33 = 0.60 m.
Answer: Energy — without transferring matter. The medium's particles only vibrate in place.
Answer: Sound waves and water waves (also: seismic waves, rope waves).
Answer: Electromagnetic waves, such as light and radio waves, because they need no medium.
Answer: In transverse waves particles vibrate at right angles to travel (crest/trough); in longitudinal waves they vibrate along the travel direction (compression/rarefaction).
Answer: The distance between two neighbouring points vibrating in phase, e.g. crest to crest, symbol λ, in metres.
Answer: The number of waves passing a fixed point per second, f, measured in hertz (Hz).
Answer: Sound is a mechanical wave, so it needs particles to vibrate — space is a vacuum with no medium. Light is an electromagnetic wave, which carries its own oscillating electric and magnetic fields and needs no medium.
Answer: A transverse wave: each part of the rope moves up and down at right angles to the wave's travel, while the wave itself moves along the rope.
Answer: Greater amplitude means greater energy (energy ∝ amplitude²). A loud sound, with large-amplitude vibrations, carries more energy and can be heard farther than a quiet one.
Answer: For the electromagnetic wave, oscillate electric charges (e.g. in a radio aerial) 100 times per second. For the mechanical wave, vibrate a source such as a tuning fork or a rope end 100 times per second in a medium.
Answer: The disturbance passes on while each particle only oscillates about its rest position: a floating cork bobs up and down as a water wave passes, and a stadium 'Mexican wave' travels around the crowd while nobody leaves their seat.
Answer: Mechanical waves need a medium (sound in air, waves on a rope) and cannot travel through vacuum. Electromagnetic waves need no medium (light, radio waves, X-rays) and travel through vacuum at 3 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹.
Answer: Transverse: vibration perpendicular to travel — rope wave (crest/trough), light. Longitudinal: vibration parallel to travel — sound (compression/rarefaction), a stretched spring pushed and pulled.
Answer: In one time period T a wave advances one wavelength λ, so speed v = λ/T. Since f = 1/T, v = fλ. Units: v in m s⁻¹, f in hertz (s⁻¹), λ in metres. Doubling frequency at fixed speed halves the wavelength.
Answer: Transverse waves vibrate at right angles to their travel (rope, light: crest and trough). Longitudinal waves vibrate along their travel (sound: compression and rarefaction). Draw the rope's up-down pattern beside the spring's crowded and spread regions to compare them.
Answer: v = fλ = 5 × 2 = 10 m s⁻¹.
Answer: f = v/λ = 300/3 = 100 Hz.
Answer: λ = v/f = 340/250 = 1.36 m.
Answer: T = 1/f = 1/50 = 0.02 s.
Answer: v = fλ = 200 × 0.5 = 100 m s⁻¹.
Answer: f = 1/T = 1/0.02 = 50 Hz.
In this chapter (Waves) you studied: Waves and Nature of Waves, Types of Waves, Terms and Parameters of Waves, Seismic Waves. Revise the definitions and formulas first, then practise the exercise questions without looking at the answers, and finally attempt the numerical problems with full working. In the board paper, MCQs test definitions and formulas, short questions test understanding, and numericals test working — so practise all three kinds.
