Electricity runs our homes, but how does it actually flow, and what do volts, amps and ohms really mean? This chapter explains current, e.m.f. and potential difference, Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, electric power and household safety — including fuses and the earth wire.
Electric current is the rate of flow of charge: I = Q/t, measured in amperes (A) — 1 A means 1 coulomb per second. In a metal wire electrons actually drift from negative to positive, but by convention we say conventional current flows from the positive terminal to the negative terminal, and circuit diagrams follow that convention. Current is measured with an ammeter connected in series, and an ammeter must have very low resistance so it does not change the current it measures.
A battery does work on charges to push them around a circuit. The electromotive force (e.m.f.) of a source is the energy it gives to each coulomb of charge: e.m.f. = W/Q, in volts (V). The potential difference (p.d.) across a component is the energy each coulomb gives up in that component. A 12 V battery gives 12 joules to every coulomb; if a bulb takes 12 J per coulomb, its p.d. is 12 V. Potential difference is measured with a voltmeter connected in parallel, and a voltmeter must have very high resistance so it draws almost no current.
Ohm's law states that the current through a metal conductor at constant temperature is directly proportional to the potential difference across it: V = IR. Resistance R, in ohms (Ω), measures how much a component opposes current. A resistor's resistance depends on its material (resistivity), its length and its cross-sectional area: longer and thinner means more resistance. The V–I graph of an ohmic conductor is a straight line through the origin; a filament bulb's graph curves because its resistance rises as it heats up.
In series, resistors join end to end: the same current flows through each, the p.d.s add up, and the total resistance is R = R₁ + R₂ + …. In parallel, resistors join across the same p.d.: the currents add up, and 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + …, so the total is always less than the smallest resistor. Example: 10 Ω and 30 Ω in parallel give 1/R = 1/10 + 1/30 = 4/30, so R = 7.5 Ω. Houses use parallel circuits so every appliance gets full voltage and works independently.
Heating a metal conductor increases its resistance: faster, more violent vibrations of the metal ions get in the way of the drifting electrons. That is why a bulb's filament has much higher resistance when hot than when cold, and why overhead lines behave differently in summer. Some materials do the opposite: a thermistor's resistance falls sharply as it warms, which is why thermistors are used in temperature sensors, fire alarms and automatic circuits.
Two resistors in series divide the supply voltage between them in proportion to their resistances: Vout = Vin × R₂/(R₁ + R₂). This is a potential divider. If one resistor is a sensor whose resistance changes — an LDR (light-dependent resistor, resistance falls in light) or a thermistor — the output voltage changes automatically. That is how automatic street lights switch on at dusk and how temperature-controlled fans and alarms work.
Electric power is the rate at which electrical energy is used: P = VI = I²R = V²/R, in watts (W). A 5 A current through a 7 Ω resistor dissipates P = 25 × 7 = 175 W. Energy used is power × time: E = Pt. Homes are billed in kilowatt-hours (units): 1 kWh = 1000 W for one hour. Cost = number of units × price per unit — for example, a 100 W bulb run 10 hours a day for 30 days uses 30 units, and at Rs. 25 per unit that costs Rs. 750.
Home circuits connect appliances in parallel across 220 V, so each gets full voltage and works independently; if one fuse blows, the rest stay on. Three wires enter a home: live (carries current in), neutral (completes the circuit) and earth (a safety path to the ground). A fuse is a thin wire that melts and breaks the circuit when the current is too high; a circuit breaker (trip switch) does the same job and can be reset. If a live wire touches a metal casing, the earth wire carries the fault current safely away instead of through you. Double-insulated appliances (plastic casings) need no earth wire.
These are تھے official exercise questions of PECTAA Class 10 Physics, Chapter 16 (Electricity), with answers.
1. The direction of conventional current is:
Answer: By convention current flows from positive to negative, opposite to electron flow.
2. What type of electric current flows in one direction only?
Answer: Direct current (D.C.) flows one way only; alternating current reverses repeatedly.
3. The device used to measure electric current:
Answer: An ammeter measures current and is connected in series.
4. What is the function of an electromotive force (e.m.f.) source in a circuit?
Answer: The source (cell/battery) supplies energy per coulomb to keep charges moving.
5. The relationship between voltage, current, and resistance is:
Answer: Ohm's law: V = IR.
6. What happens to the resistance of a metal conductor when its temperature increases?
Answer: Faster ion vibrations obstruct the electrons more, so resistance rises.
Answer: It is connected in series so the full circuit current passes through it; it has very low resistance so it hardly affects the current, and it reads in amperes.
Answer: Direct current flows in one direction only (cells, batteries). Alternating current reverses direction repeatedly (mains supply, 50 Hz in Pakistan).
Answer: The energy supplied by a source to each coulomb of charge passing through it, e.m.f. = W/Q, measured in volts.
Answer: Ohm's law: V = IR at constant temperature. Resistivity ρ is the resistance of a 1 m long, 1 m² cross-section sample of the material: R = ρL/A.
Answer: R = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + … — the resistances simply add.
Answer: For metals, resistance increases with temperature because ion vibrations increase. For thermistors and semiconductors it decreases.
Answer: An ammeter must carry the circuit current without adding resistance, so it goes in series with tiny resistance. A voltmeter must sample the p.d. without drawing current, so it goes in parallel with huge resistance. Swapped, the ammeter would short the supply (huge current, damage) and the voltmeter in series would block the circuit.
Answer: All bulbs would share the voltage and glow dimly; if one bulb fused, the whole chain would go out; and bulbs could not be switched independently.
Answer: Choose a fuse rated slightly above the normal current, e.g. about 6–7 A (or the next standard rating above 5 A), so normal use never blows it but a fault does. Too low a rating blows during normal use; too high a rating lets a dangerous fault current flow without breaking the circuit.
Answer: A.C. voltage can be stepped up and down with transformers. High-voltage, low-current transmission loses far less energy as heat (P = I²R), so A.C. suits long distances; batteries naturally give steady D.C., which suits small electronics.
Answer: The thick wire: resistance falls as cross-sectional area rises (R = ρL/A), so it carries a large current with less heating and less energy loss.
Answer: Current is the rate of charge flow, I = Q/t in amperes. In metals it is drifting electrons; conventional current is taken as positive-to-negative. It is measured by an ammeter in series, which must have very low resistance.
Answer: E.m.f. is the energy a source gives per coulomb; p.d. is the energy a component takes per coulomb. A battery's chemical reactions separate charges, building a p.d. between terminals; its e.m.f. keeps replenishing the energy so current flows continuously around the circuit.
Answer: V = IR: current is proportional to p.d. at constant temperature. Higher resistance means less current for the same voltage. In practice Ohm's law sizes resistors, predicts currents, and explains why a 220 V bulb and a 12 V bulb need different circuits.
Answer: Series: same current, p.d.s add, R = R₁ + R₂ + …. Parallel: same p.d., currents add, 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + …. Series totals exceed any single resistor; parallel totals are smaller than the smallest.
Answer: Power is the rate of using energy, P = VI in watts. Energy is E = Pt in joules; in homes it is counted in kilowatt-hours (1 kWh = 3.6 × 10⁶ J). Cost = units × price per unit.
Answer: I = Q/t = 25/10 = 2.5 A.
Answer: R = 4 + 6 + 8 = 18 Ω; I = V/R = 24/18 = 1.33 A.
Answer: 1/R = 1/10 + 1/30 = 4/30, so R = 7.5 Ω; I = V/R = 20/7.5 = 2.67 A.
Answer: E.m.f.s in series add: 4 × 1.5 = 6 V.
Answer: P = I²R = 25 × 7 = 175 W. Energy E = Pt = 175 × 600 = 105,000 J = 105 kJ.
