Electricity and magnetism are two faces of the same thing. This chapter shows how a current makes a magnetic field, how a magnetic field pushes on a current-carrying wire, and how that push is turned into the spinning motion of an electric motor.
A steady current always creates a magnetic field around its conductor. Around a straight wire the field lines are concentric circles, and the right-hand grip rule gives their direction: grip the wire with your right thumb pointing along the current, and your fingers curl in the field's direction. The field is stronger for a larger current and closer to the wire. A solenoid — a long coil — produces a field like a bar magnet's, strong and nearly uniform inside, with one end acting as north pole and the other as south.
Place a current-carrying wire in a magnetic field and the field pushes on it. The force is F = BIL sinθ, greatest when the wire is at right angles to the field and zero when it is parallel. Its direction is given by Fleming's left-hand rule: thumb = force (motion), first finger = field, second finger = current, with all three at right angles. The force grows with the field strength, the current and the wire's length — and it reverses if either the current or the field reverses.
Put a rectangular coil in a magnetic field and the two sides carry current in opposite directions, so the field pushes one side up and the other down — a couple that turns the coil. The turning effect (torque) is largest when the coil's plane is parallel to the field and falls to zero when the coil has turned 90°, with its plane at right angles to the field. More turns, a bigger coil area, a larger current and a stronger field all increase the turning effect, which is why motors use many-turn coils.
A D.C. motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy using the turning effect above. Its coil sits between magnet poles; carbon brushes press on a commutator (split rings) that feeds current into the coil. Every half-turn the commutator swaps the coil's connections, reversing the current just as the turning effect would die away — so the coil keeps rotating in the same direction. Without the commutator the coil would rock back and forth and stop after 90°. The motor's speed rises with current, turns and field strength.
These are تھے official exercise questions of PECTAA Class 10 Physics, Chapter 17 (Electromagnetism), with answers.
1. Which statement is true about the magnetic poles?
Answer: Like poles repel, unlike poles attract, and a magnet always has both poles — an isolated pole has never been found.
2. A D.C motor converts:
Answer: A motor uses electrical energy to produce rotation; a generator does the reverse.
3. The part of a D.C motor that reverses the direction of current through the coil every half-cycle:
Answer: The split-ring commutator swaps the coil's connections every half-turn. (The commutator is made of the split rings.)
4. What does a steady electric current in a conductor generate around it?
Answer: Moving charges produce a magnetic field around the conductor.
5. What happens to the magnetic field direction when the direction of the current is reversed?
Answer: The field direction follows the current (right-hand grip rule), so it reverses too.
6. In a solenoid, the magnetic field pattern is most likely to:
Answer: A solenoid's field, strong and uniform inside with poles at the ends, matches a bar magnet's.
Answer: Concentric circles around the wire; by the right-hand grip rule, with the thumb along the current, the fingers curl in the field direction.
Answer: The field becomes stronger — field strength is directly proportional to the current — and it still falls off with distance from the wire.
Answer: Fleming's left-hand rule: thumb = force/motion, first finger = magnetic field, second finger = current, all mutually at right angles.
Answer: It reverses the current through the coil every half-turn, so the turning effect always acts in the same rotational direction.
Answer: A current-carrying coil placed in a magnetic field experiences a couple (turning effect), which rotates the coil — converting electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Answer: A magnetic field is produced by moving charges. With no current the electrons' random motion cancels out, so no net field appears; a steady current is an organised flow of charge, which creates a field.
Answer: Moving charges create magnetic fields, so a current — an organised drift of electrons — produces a field, while the random motion of electrons with no current averages to zero. This reveals that electricity and magnetism are linked: magnetism is, at root, electricity in motion.
Answer: After 90° the coil's plane is perpendicular to the field, so the couple drops to zero and the coil would swing back. The split-ring commutator solves this by reversing the current at that point, keeping the couple acting in the same direction.
Answer: Force follows F = BIL sinθ: maximum at 90°, zero when parallel to the field. Motors are therefore designed so the coil's active sides stay near 90° to the field for most of the turn, giving a strong, steady torque.
Answer: Moving charges (the current) generate circular field lines around the wire. Strength increases with current and decreases with distance from the wire; coiling the wire into a solenoid concentrates the field.
Answer: Grip the wire with the right hand, thumb pointing in the current's direction; the curled fingers show the circular field's direction. Reversing the current reverses the curl.
Answer: Opposite sides of the coil carry opposite currents, so the field pushes one side up and the other down. This pair of equal, opposite forces — a couple — rotates the coil, with maximum torque when the coil plane is parallel to the field.
Answer: Brushes are fixed carbon contacts that feed current to the rotating coil through the commutator. The split-ring commutator swaps the coil's connections every half-turn, reversing the current so the couple never reverses, and the coil spins continuously.
In this chapter (Electromagnetism) you studied: Magnetic Effects of Steady Current, Force on a Current-Carrying Conductor in a Magnetic Field, Turning Effect on a Current-Carrying Coil in Magnetic Field, Electric Motor. Revise the definitions and formulas first, then practise the exercise questions without looking at the answers, and finally attempt the numerical problems with full working. In the board paper, MCQs test definitions and formulas, short questions test understanding, and numericals test working — so practise all three kinds.
