ENGLISH

Move a magnet near a coil and a current appears — with no battery at all. This chapter explains electromagnetic induction and Faraday's and Lenz's laws, how an A.C. generator makes the electricity in our homes, and how transformers step voltage up and down.

1. Electromagnetic Induction
🏷 Tags: electromagnetic induction, Faraday law, Lenz law, magnetic flux
ENGLISH

Electromagnetic induction is the production of an e.m.f. (and current, if the circuit is complete) in a coil when the magnetic flux through it changes — by moving a magnet, moving the coil, or changing the current in a nearby coil. Faraday's law states that the induced e.m.f. equals the rate of change of flux linkage: e = −N ΔΦ/Δt. Faster motion, more turns, or a stronger magnet all give a bigger e.m.f. Lenz's law gives the direction: the induced current always opposes the change that caused it — which is really the law of conservation of energy, since pushing a magnet into a coil takes work, and that work becomes electrical energy.

−− −+ +Magnet moves inFlux changes → e.m.f.Faster motion = bigger e.m.f.
2. A.C. Generator
🏷 Tags: AC generator, slip rings, brushes, sine wave
ENGLISH

An A.C. generator turns mechanical energy into electrical energy. A rectangular coil rotates between magnet poles; as it turns, the flux through it rises and falls, so the induced e.m.f. alternates — a sine wave. The coil's ends connect to two slip rings that rotate with the coil, while fixed carbon brushes press on them and carry the current out to the circuit. Slip rings simply maintain continuous electrical contact; they do not reverse the current (that is the split-ring commutator's job in a D.C. machine). The induced e.m.f. is zero when the coil's plane is perpendicular to the field (no flux change at that instant) and maximum when it cuts the field fastest. Faster rotation gives higher frequency and larger e.m.f.

3. Transformer
🏷 Tags: transformer, step-up, step-down, mutual induction, iron core
ENGLISH

A transformer changes A.C. voltage using mutual induction. Alternating current in the primary coil creates a changing magnetic flux in a laminated soft-iron core, which induces an e.m.f. in the secondary coil. The voltages follow the turns ratio: Vs/Vp = Ns/Np. More secondary turns give a step-up transformer (e.g. 500 primary turns, 100 secondary, 220 V in → 44 V out is step-down; a 2:100 ratio with 25 V in gives 1250 V out, step-up). Transformers work only on A.C., because only a changing flux induces an e.m.f. The iron core is used because it concentrates the flux and carries it efficiently from coil to coil; lamination cuts energy loss from eddy currents.

📝 Exercise Questions — with Answers📝

These are تھے official exercise questions of PECTAA Class 10 Physics, Chapter 18 (Electromagnetic Induction), with answers.

Section A: Multiple Choice Questions

1. What does the waveform of an alternating current look like?

Answer / جواب

Answer: A rotating coil's output rises and falls smoothly — a sine wave.

2. What happens to the induced e.m.f. in a coil if the rate of change of the magnetic field increases?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Faraday's law: e.m.f. is proportional to the rate of change of flux.

3. In an A.C generator, slip rings are used to:

⚠ Note: none of the printed options is correct — read the explanation below.

Answer / جواب

Answer: No printed option is correct. Slip rings maintain continuous electrical contact between the rotating coil and the external circuit (see the red note below). Reversing current is the split-ring commutator's job, not the slip rings'.

4. In a step-down transformer, the number of turns in the secondary coil is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: Step-down means Vs < Vp, so Ns < Np by Vs/Vp = Ns/Np.

5. In a transformer, energy is transferred from the primary coil to the secondary coil through:

Answer / جواب

Answer: The changing flux in the iron core links the two coils; there is no wire connection between them.

Section B: Short Answer Questions
1. How does the speed at which a magnet move through a coil affect the size of the induced voltage?

Answer: A faster magnet changes the flux more quickly, so by Faraday's law the induced e.m.f. is larger.

2. What is the direction of induced current in Lenz's law?

Answer: The induced current flows in the direction that opposes the change producing it — e.g. it creates a magnetic pole that repels an approaching magnet.

3. Why are slip rings used in an A.C generator?

Answer: Slip rings rotate with the coil while fixed brushes press on them, keeping continuous electrical contact so the generated alternating current can flow to the external circuit.

4. When is induced e.m.f. zero in an A.C generator?

Answer: When the coil's plane is perpendicular to the magnetic field: at that instant the flux is maximum but its rate of change is zero, so no e.m.f. is induced.

5. What is a transformer and on what principle does it work?

Answer: A transformer is a device that changes A.C. voltage. It works on mutual induction: a changing current in the primary creates changing flux in the core, inducing voltage in the secondary.

6. What is the role of iron core in a transformer?

Answer: The soft-iron core concentrates the magnetic flux and guides it efficiently from the primary coil to the secondary coil, so almost all the flux links both coils.

Section C: Constructed Response Questions
1. If a magnet is moved quickly into a coil, a larger e.m.f. is induced. Why does speed affect the magnitude of the induced current?

Answer: Induced e.m.f. depends on the rate of change of flux (e = −N ΔΦ/Δt). A quick push changes the flux in less time, so ΔΦ/Δt is larger and the e.m.f. — and therefore the current — is larger.

2. Why is an iron core used in transformers instead of wood or plastic? Explain briefly.

Answer: Iron is magnetic: it concentrates the flux and channels it from primary to secondary, so nearly all the flux links both coils. Wood and plastic are non-magnetic, so most flux would leak away and little voltage would be induced.

3. Why can a transformer work only on alternating current and not on direct current?

Answer: A transformer needs a changing flux to induce voltage. D.C. gives a steady flux after switch-on, so no e.m.f. is induced in the secondary (and a steady large D.C. would overheat the primary).

4. Does a transformer transform electrical energy from one coil to another? Describe briefly.

Answer: Yes — but not by a wire connection. Electrical energy in the primary becomes magnetic energy in the core's changing flux, then back to electrical energy in the secondary. In an ideal transformer power in equals power out.

5. Describe how Lenz's Law supports the law of conservation of energy. Give one real-life example to support your explanation.

Answer: Lenz's law says the induced current opposes the change: pushing a magnet into a coil is resisted by the induced field, so you must do work — that work becomes the electrical energy. Example: in an induction hob or in regenerative braking, the resistance you feel is energy being converted, not created.

Section D: Comprehensive Questions
1. Describe the working principle of an A.C generator. Explain the parts involved, the role of electromagnetic induction, and how the device produces a current that alternates direction.

Answer: A coil rotates in a magnetic field, so the flux through it changes continuously. By Faraday's law an e.m.f. is induced; its direction reverses every half-turn as the coil's sides swap their motion relative to the field, giving a sine-wave alternating current. Slip rings and brushes carry this current to the external circuit without reversing it.

2. Compare step-up and step-down transformers. Include the difference in number of turns, output voltage, and where is each used.

Answer: Step-up: Ns > Np, so Vs > Vp — used at power stations to raise voltage for long-distance transmission. Step-down: Ns < Np, so Vs < Vp — used near homes (e.g. 220 V from 11 kV lines) and in phone chargers. Both follow Vs/Vp = Ns/Np and work only on A.C.

Section E: Numerical Problems
1. A coil consisting of 50 tightly wound turns experiences a change in magnetic flux from 0.3 Wb to 0.8 Wb over a time interval of 0.4 s. Determine the average induced electromotive force (e.m.f.) generated in the coil during this time.

Answer: e = −N ΔΦ/Δt = −50 × (0.8 − 0.3)/0.4 = −50 × 0.5/0.4 = −62.5 V (the minus sign is Lenz's law: the e.m.f. opposes the flux increase).

2. A circular loop of radius 0.2 m and resistance 5 Ω is placed perpendicular to a magnetic field of 0.5 T. If the field drops to zero in 0.1 s, calculate: (a) the induced emf (b) the induced current and its direction (assuming the field points into the page)

Answer: Area A = πr² = 3.14 × 0.04 = 0.1256 m². (a) e = A ΔB/Δt = 0.1256 × 0.5/0.1 = 0.63 V. (b) I = e/R = 0.63/5 = 0.126 A. Direction: the induced current tries to replace the lost into-page flux, so it flows clockwise (its own field points into the page).

3. A transformer has 500 primary turns and 100 secondary turns. If the primary voltage is 220 V, find: (a) secondary voltage (b) is this a step-up or step-down transformer?

Answer: (a) Vs = Vp × Ns/Np = 220 × 100/500 = 44 V. (b) Step-down, since Vs < Vp.

4. A step-up transformer has a turns ratio of 2:100. If an alternating voltage of 25 V is applied to the primary coil, what will be the secondary voltage?

Answer: Vs = 25 × 100/2 = 1250 V.

5. A step-down transformer has a turns ratio of 100:5. If an A.C voltage of 190 V is applied to the primary coil, what is the voltage across the secondary coil?

Answer: Vs = 190 × 5/100 = 9.5 V.
