Source note / ذریعہ نوٹ: This revised page is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for this unit. No official Class 3 English textbook was on disk for this build, so no official-book page coverage is claimed here and no official-book page numbers are given; the questions below are SLO-based practice questions from the library masters, with the masters' model answers, and are NOT the textbook's printed exercise. Open questions whose answers vary carry the masters' example answers. The masters explain the unit's skills and themes; they do not reproduce the textbook's lesson text, and neither does this page. Urdu headings and the Urdu line on the banner are supplied translations for study help. یہ نظرثانی شدہ صفحہ اس یونٹ کے موجودہ پنجاب ٹیسٹ لائبریری باب سے بنایا گیا ہے؛ سرکاری کتاب اس تعمیر کے دوران ڈسک پر موجود نہیں تھی۔

1. 🎵 The Five Vowelsپانچ واولز
🏷 Tags: vowels, a e i o u, consonants, every word
ENGLISHEnglish has five vowels: a, e, i, o, u. All other letters are consonants. Every word has at least one vowel: cat (a), pen (e), sit (i), hot (o), cup (u). Without vowels, words cannot be spoken easily.

There is a trick for remembering the five vowels: say them as a little chant — a, e, i, o, u — and clap once on each. Now cover the list and write the five from memory. If one is missing, say the chant again and catch which clap had no letter.

Look at any word and hunt for its vowel the way you hunt for the red ball in a box of toys. In cat the vowel is a, in pen it is e, in sit it is i, in hot it is o, in cup it is u. No vowel, no word — every word you read today will prove it.

اردوانگریزی میں پانچ واولز ہیں: a، e، i، o، u۔ باقی تمام حروف consonants ہیں۔ ہر لفظ میں کم از کم ایک واول ہوتا ہے: cat (a)، pen (e)، sit (i)، hot (o)، cup (u)۔

Five vowelsa e i o uOther letters = consonantsEvery word has a vowel
Vowels samjho: a, e, i, o, u پانچ vowels ہیں; باقی حرف consonants, اور ہر لفظ میں ایک vowel ضرور ہوتا ہے.
2. 🔊 Short Vowel Soundsمختصر واول آوازیں
🏷 Tags: short vowels, cat, pen, pin, pot, cup, middle sound
ENGLISHShort vowels are quick sounds: a as in cat, e as in pen, i as in pin, o as in pot, u as in cup. The vowel in the middle of a short word is usually short: c-a-t says 'cat'.

Short vowels are quick and snappy — your mouth barely opens and the sound is already gone. Say cat, pen, pin, pot, cup one after another and feel how short each middle sound is. The vowel sits in the middle of these little words like the filling in a sandwich.

When you spell, listen for that middle sound before you write anything. If you hear 'a' in the middle, the word cannot be 'ct' or 'cut' — it has to be 'cat'. Ears first, pencil second, every time.

✏️ Example / مثال: Read these pairs aloud and hear the change: cap/cape, kit/kite, hop/hope. The final 'e' is silent but changes the vowel sound.

Picture note — Example: cap → cape • kit → kite • hop → hope

Short vowelsa — cate — peni — pino — potu — cup
Short vowel samjho: cat, pen, pin, pot, cup — درمیانی آواز چھوٹی اور تیز ہوتی ہے.
3. 🎶 Long Vowel Soundsلمبی واول آوازیں
🏷 Tags: long vowels, magic e, cake, kite, cape, pine
ENGLISHLong vowels say their own names: a as in cake, e as in feet, i as in kite, o as in rope, u as in mule. A magic 'e' at the end often makes the vowel long: cap becomes cape, pin becomes pine.

A long vowel says its own name, loud and clear: the a in cake says 'A', the i in kite says 'I'. The magic e at the end is silent — you do not hear it at all — but it stretches the vowel before it, the way pulling a rubber band stretches it longer.

Practise in pairs and listen for the stretch: cap is short, cape is long; pin is short, pine is long; tub is short, tube is long. Once your ear catches the difference, your reading will sound right and your spelling will follow.

Magic ecap → capepin → pinetub → tubeMagic e makes vowel long
Magic e samjho: آخری خاموش e vowel کو لمبا کر دیتا ہے — cap سے cape, pin سے pine.
4. ✏️ Vowels in Spellingاملا میں واولز
🏷 Tags: spelling, fill the vowel, listening, ball, fish, book
ENGLISHTo spell a word, listen for its vowel sound. Missing vowels make spelling wrong: 'ct' is not a word, but 'cat' is. Practise: fill the vowel — b_ll (ball), f_sh (fish), b_k (book).

Spelling is really listening in slow motion. Say the word slowly, hold each sound, and write the letter for each sound you hear. When you get stuck, the vowel is usually the missing piece — put your finger on the gap and try each vowel sound until one sounds like the word you want.

Make it a daily five-minute game: someone says ball, fish or book with the vowel missing — b_ll, f_sh, b_k — and you fill it in. A week of this game, and missing vowels will start to feel as wrong as a shoe on the wrong foot.

Fill the vowelb_ll = ballf_sh = fishb_k = bookListen for the vowel!
Spelling samjho: vowel سنو, پھر لکھو — b_ll ball ہے, f_sh fish ہے, b_k book ہے.

ENGLISHFive vowels, short and long sounds, and the magic 'e' — vowels make words speakable.

Revise by chanting the five vowels, then sorting words into two piles: short sounds (cat, pen, pin) and long sounds (cake, kite, rope). Add a magic-e pair to each pile — cap/cape, pin/pine — and read both piles out loud without a mistake.

Before the exercise, test yourself with one question: why can 'ct' never be a word? If your answer is 'because it has no vowel', you have understood the whole chapter, not just memorised it.

ENGLISH

This chapter is all about vowels: the five vowels a, e, i, o, u, their quick short sounds in words like cat and pen, their long sounds that say their own names in cake and kite, the silent magic e that stretches a vowel, and how listening for the vowel fixes spelling. The exercise is 5 multiple-choice, 4 short-answer, 2 long-answer and 1 think-and-answer SLO practice questions with the masters' answers.

Revision guidance: Chant the five vowels, sort words into short-sound and long-sound piles, and read one magic-e pair out loud before the exercise. If you can explain why 'ct' is not a word, the chapter is understood.
