There is a trick for remembering the five vowels: say them as a little chant — a, e, i, o, u — and clap once on each. Now cover the list and write the five from memory. If one is missing, say the chant again and catch which clap had no letter.
Look at any word and hunt for its vowel the way you hunt for the red ball in a box of toys. In cat the vowel is a, in pen it is e, in sit it is i, in hot it is o, in cup it is u. No vowel, no word — every word you read today will prove it.
Short vowels are quick and snappy — your mouth barely opens and the sound is already gone. Say cat, pen, pin, pot, cup one after another and feel how short each middle sound is. The vowel sits in the middle of these little words like the filling in a sandwich.
When you spell, listen for that middle sound before you write anything. If you hear 'a' in the middle, the word cannot be 'ct' or 'cut' — it has to be 'cat'. Ears first, pencil second, every time.
Picture note — Example: cap → cape • kit → kite • hop → hope
A long vowel says its own name, loud and clear: the a in cake says 'A', the i in kite says 'I'. The magic e at the end is silent — you do not hear it at all — but it stretches the vowel before it, the way pulling a rubber band stretches it longer.
Practise in pairs and listen for the stretch: cap is short, cape is long; pin is short, pine is long; tub is short, tube is long. Once your ear catches the difference, your reading will sound right and your spelling will follow.
Spelling is really listening in slow motion. Say the word slowly, hold each sound, and write the letter for each sound you hear. When you get stuck, the vowel is usually the missing piece — put your finger on the gap and try each vowel sound until one sounds like the word you want.
Make it a daily five-minute game: someone says ball, fish or book with the vowel missing — b_ll, f_sh, b_k — and you fill it in. A week of this game, and missing vowels will start to feel as wrong as a shoe on the wrong foot.
Revise by chanting the five vowels, then sorting words into two piles: short sounds (cat, pen, pin) and long sounds (cake, kite, rope). Add a magic-e pair to each pile — cap/cape, pin/pine — and read both piles out loud without a mistake.
Before the exercise, test yourself with one question: why can 'ct' never be a word? If your answer is 'because it has no vowel', you have understood the whole chapter, not just memorised it.

Answer: a, e, i, o, u — education has all five! education
This chapter is all about vowels: the five vowels a, e, i, o, u, their quick short sounds in words like cat and pen, their long sounds that say their own names in cake and kite, the silent magic e that stretches a vowel, and how listening for the vowel fixes spelling. The exercise is 5 multiple-choice, 4 short-answer, 2 long-answer and 1 think-and-answer SLO practice questions with the masters' answers.
Revision guidance: Chant the five vowels, sort words into short-sound and long-sound piles, and read one magic-e pair out loud before the exercise. If you can explain why 'ct' is not a word, the chapter is understood.
