A digraph is a team of two letters that share one voice. Cover the second letter of 'ship' and try to read it — 'sip' is a different word. Uncover it, and sh speaks with one sound. That is the whole secret: two letters, one sound, read together.
Point at each digraph as you read: sh in ship, ch in chair, th in this, ph in phone, wh in wheel. Five teams, five sounds — learn them like the names of five friends, and new words will stop looking scary.
Do not rush past new digraphs — meet them one at a time. Say ck in duck slowly, then ng in king, qu in queen, oo in book and moon, ee in feet, ea in eat. Each one is just a new team joining the five you already know.
When you read a word, be a detective first: find the digraph before you try the whole word. In 'school', the sch team comes first, then oo, then l — and suddenly a long word is just three small steps.
Picture note — Example: school = sch + oo + l • chair = ch + air • star = st + ar
تصویر نوٹ — مثال: school = sch + oo + l • chair = ch + air • star = st + ar
A blend is the opposite kind of team: both letters keep their own voices and just hurry together. Say bl in blue slowly — you can still hear b and then l, like two friends running side by side instead of holding one voice.
Listen for both sounds every time: st in star is s plus t, tr in tree is t plus r, gr in green is g plus r, sp in spoon is s plus p. If you can hear two sounds, it is a blend; if you hear only one, it is a digraph — that one test sorts them all.
New words are less frightening when you attack them in order. First circle the digraphs and blends, then sound out what is left, then read the whole word fast. 'Street' looks long, but st + r + ee + t is four easy pieces.
Read a little every day, even five minutes, and these teams will start jumping out at you before you even think. That is how fluent readers are made — not by knowing harder words, but by spotting familiar teams faster.
Revise with two columns on your copy: digraphs on the left (sh, ch, th, ph, ck, ng) and blends on the right (bl, st, tr, gr, sp). Say one word for each team without looking at the chapter, and any team you forget goes back on tomorrow's list.
Then take any word from your room — chair, book, sheet, star — and break it into teams out loud. If you can break it, you can read it, and that is the whole chapter in one skill.

This chapter teaches you to spot letter teams before you read: digraphs, where two letters make one sound (sh, ch, th, ph, wh, ck, ng), and blends, where two letters keep both sounds said quickly together (bl, st, tr, gr, sp) — and then how to break any new word into teams and read it fast. The exercise is 5 multiple-choice, 4 short-answer, 2 long-answer and 1 think-and-answer SLO practice questions with the masters' answers.
Revision guidance: Make the two columns — digraphs on the left, blends on the right — and break three words from your room into teams out loud. The one test to remember: one sound heard means digraph, two sounds heard means blend.
