📌 Source note: This chapter was built from PunjabTest.com's existing Class 3 General Knowledge library chapter (library master). No official Class 3 General Knowledge textbook was available on disk while building it, so no book page numbers are claimed here, and the exercise below is the library master's SLO-based practice — it is NOT presented as the official book exercise and was not re-checked against the official book.
In this chapter you will learn about 1. 💪 What is a Force?, 2. 🧲 Friction and Gravity, 3. 🔧 Simple Machines, 4. ⚙️ Machines in Daily Life — read each topic slowly in English, then in Urdu, and study the diagram before moving on.
A force is a push or a pull. You push a door to open it and pull a drawer to open it. Forces can move things, stop them, change their direction or change their shape — like squeezing soft clay.
Push your door open, then pull a drawer open: both are forces, one push and one pull. Now watch what a force can do — start a ball rolling, stop it, turn it aside, or squash soft clay into a new shape. One word, force, covers all four tricks.
Friction is the force that slows things down: a ball stops rolling on rough ground. Gravity pulls everything down to Earth: a thrown ball always comes back down. Without gravity we would float away!
Roll a ball on a smooth floor and then on rough ground: on the rough ground it stops sooner, because friction — the force that slows things — is bigger there. Throw a ball up and it always falls back, because gravity pulls everything down to Earth. Without gravity you would float away like a balloon.
Push a heavy box on a smooth floor and on a rough road. On the rough road friction is bigger, so pushing is harder — that is why we oil machine parts.
Simple machines make work easier. A lever lifts heavy things (see-saw). A pulley lifts with a rope (well). A wheel and axle moves carts. An inclined plane (ramp) helps push things up. A screw holds things together.
Meet the five helpers one by one: a lever lifts heavy things like a see-saw, a pulley lifts with a rope like a well, a wheel and axle roll carts along, a ramp lets you push things up gently, and a screw holds things tight together. Each one makes your force go further.
Scissors are levers, a bottle opener is a lever, a flag pole uses a pulley, and a bicycle uses wheels and pedals. Machines do not do work by magic — they help our force work better.
Hunt for machines in your own home: scissors and a bottle opener are levers, a flag pole uses a pulley, a bicycle runs on wheels and pedals. Then remember the honest truth — machines do not work by magic. They simply help the force from your own hands work better.
These questions are SLO-based practice questions for this chapter. They are NOT copied from the official textbook exercise, because the official Class 3 book exercise was not available to verify word-for-word. Learn the chapter first, then try every question without looking at the answer. All answers below are the library master's model answers (derived from the chapter text), not copied from an official answer key.
MCQ 1: A force is a:
Answer: Push or pull.
MCQ 2: Which force pulls things to Earth?
Answer: Gravity.
MCQ 3: A see-saw is a:
Answer: Lever.
MCQ 4: Friction makes moving things:
Answer: Slower.
MCQ 5: A well uses a:
Answer: Pulley.
Answer: A push or a pull.
Answer: Push: open a door. Pull: open a drawer.
Answer: The force that slows moving things.
Answer: Lever, pulley, wheel (or ramp, screw).
Answer: Gravity pulls everything towards Earth.
Answer: Pushing up a gentle slope needs less force than lifting straight up.
Answer: A ramp — pushing up a slope is easier than lifting.
Forces push and pull; friction and gravity act everywhere; simple machines make our work easier.
Revision guidance: Find three levers, one pulley and one wheel at home, and explain friction with the smooth-floor and rough-road ball test.
