📌 Source note: This chapter was built from PunjabTest.com's existing Class 3 General Knowledge library chapter (library master). No official Class 3 General Knowledge textbook was available on disk while building it, so no book page numbers are claimed here, and the exercise below is the library master's SLO-based practice — it is NOT presented as the official book exercise and was not re-checked against the official book.
In this chapter you will learn about 1. 🔍 Discovery vs Invention, 2. 💡 Great Inventors, 3. 🖨️ Inventions That Changed Life, 4. 🇵🇰 Science in Pakistan — read each topic slowly in English, then in Urdu, and study the diagram before moving on.
A discovery finds something that already exists: Newton discovered gravity, explorers discovered new lands. An invention makes something new: the telephone, the light bulb, the aeroplane. Both change our lives.
Ask of anything new: did it already exist, or did someone make it? Gravity already existed, so Newton discovered it; explorers found lands that were already there. A telephone, a bulb, an aeroplane never existed before, so they were invented. Found versus made — that is the whole difference.
Thomas Edison invented the light bulb and worked hard through hundreds of tries. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. The Wright brothers made the first aeroplane. They all failed many times and kept trying.
Remember the three names with their gifts: Edison and the light bulb, Bell and the telephone, the Wright brothers and the aeroplane. Then remember what they shared: failure after failure, and trying again every time. Talent helped them, but not giving up made them inventors.
Edison tried hundreds of materials for his bulb before one worked. When asked about failing, he said he had learned hundreds of ways that do not work — failure taught him.
The printing press spread books and knowledge. The wheel changed transport. Computers and the internet changed learning and talking. Vaccines (medicines that prevent disease) save millions of lives every year.
Trace how four inventions changed ordinary days: the printing press put books in many hands, the wheel moved goods and people, computers and the internet changed learning and talking, and vaccines save millions of lives each year. One invention can change what a whole generation can do.
Pakistan's scientists work in medicine, space, farming and computers. Dr Abdus Salam won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979 — the first Pakistani Nobel winner in science. Young Pakistani students today can become tomorrow's inventors.
Look at Pakistan's own scientists: they work in medicine, space, farming and computers, and Dr Abdus Salam won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979. That prize proves inventors are not only from faraway countries. A Class 3 student asking good questions today may be tomorrow's inventor.
These questions are SLO-based practice questions for this chapter. They are NOT copied from the official textbook exercise, because the official Class 3 book exercise was not available to verify word-for-word. Learn the chapter first, then try every question without looking at the answer. All answers below are the library master's model answers (derived from the chapter text), not copied from an official answer key.

Answer: Physics, in 1979.
MCQ 5: Which invention spread books widely?
Answer: Printing press.
Answer: Discovery finds existing things; invention makes new things.
Answer: The Wright brothers.
Answer: Printing press (or computer/internet).
Answer: A Pakistani scientist, Nobel Prize winner in Physics 1979.
Answer: Each failure teaches what does not work, bringing the inventor closer to what works.
Answer: Books became cheaper and common, so more children could read and learn.
Answer: Answers vary — any real problem with a simple invention idea.
⚠️ Note: Open question — answers vary; the answer above is a model answer, not the only correct one.
Discoveries find what exists, inventions make something new — and both need curiosity and never giving up.
Revision guidance: Sort five examples into discovery vs invention without looking, and write your own one-line invention idea for a home problem.
