Allama Muhammad Iqbal was born on 9 November 1877 in Sialkot. He was a brilliant student who loved reading and poetry. He studied in Lahore and later in Germany, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy.
Learn the pair together: 9 November 1877, Sialkot. Then picture the student: a boy who read a lot and loved poetry more than games. Follow him to Lahore and then to Germany, where his reading turned into a doctorate in philosophy.
Iqbal is called the Poet of the East (Shair-e-Mashriq). His poetry wakes people up: it teaches self-respect, hard work and hope. His famous books include Bang-e-Dra and Bal-e-Jibril. Children love his poem about the eagle (Shaheen).
Say the title slowly: Shair-e-Mashriq, the Poet of the East. His poems were not only beautiful — they woke people up, teaching self-respect, hard work and hope. Two books to remember by name are Bang-e-Dra and Bal-e-Jibril, and children especially love his eagle poem.
Iqbal's message for children: learn, work hard and believe in yourself — like the Shaheen that never sits low.
In 1930, at Allahabad, Iqbal gave the idea of a separate homeland for the Muslims of north-west India. This idea later became Pakistan. That is why he is called the Thinker of Pakistan (Mufakkir-e-Pakistan).
Go to Allahabad, 1930, in your mind: Iqbal stands up and gives an idea — a separate homeland for the Muslims of north-west India. At first it was only an idea in words. Seventeen years later those words had become Pakistan, which is why he is called Mufakkir-e-Pakistan, the Thinker of Pakistan.
Iqbal loved the eagle because it flies high, lives free and never begs for food. He wanted Muslim youth to be like the Shaheen: brave, hardworking and aiming high. Iqbal Day is celebrated on 9 November.
Watch an eagle in your mind: it flies high instead of low, it lives free, and it never begs for its food. Iqbal wanted young people to copy exactly that — aim high in studies, stay brave, and work hard. Every 9 November, Iqbal Day, reminds us to check: am I living like the Shaheen?
