📌 Source note: This chapter was built from PunjabTest.com's existing Class 3 General Knowledge library chapter (library master). No official Class 3 General Knowledge textbook was available on disk while building it, so no book page numbers are claimed here, and the exercise below is the library master's SLO-based practice — it is NOT presented as the official book exercise and was not re-checked against the official book.
In this chapter you will learn about 1. 🐾 Living and Non-Living Things, 2. 🏠 Habitats, 3. 🦋 Changes in Living Things, 4. 🍽️ Food Chains — read each topic slowly in English, then in Urdu, and study the diagram before moving on.
Living things can grow, eat, breathe and make babies: plants, animals and humans. Non-living things cannot: rocks, water, chairs. A plant is living even though it does not walk — it grows and makes food.
Test anything with four questions: does it grow, eat, breathe and make babies? A plant passes even though it never walks — it grows and makes its own food. A rock, a chair and water fail all four, so they are non-living. Four yeses mean living.
A habitat is the home of a living thing. Fish live in water, camels live in deserts, polar bears live in cold snow, and monkeys live in forests. Animals have special body parts for their habitat: fish have fins, camels store fat in humps.
Match each animal to its home: fish to water, camel to desert, polar bear to cold snow, monkey to forest. Then look at the body: fins for swimming, a hump for desert journeys, thick fur for snow. The home shapes the body, and the body fits the home.
A frog's life: egg in water → tadpole with tail → froglet with legs → adult frog on land and water.
Living things change as they grow. A caterpillar becomes a butterfly; a tadpole becomes a frog; a baby becomes a child and then an adult. Plants grow from seeds into big trees. These changes are called life cycles.
Follow one creature from start to finish: a caterpillar eats, sleeps in a cocoon and wakes as a butterfly; a tadpole loses its tail and grows legs; a seed pushes up into a tree. These whole journeys, not single moments, are what we call life cycles.
Living things depend on each other for food. Grass is eaten by a goat, the goat is eaten by a lion: grass → goat → lion. This chain is a food chain. If one part disappears, the others suffer.
Build the chain link by link: grass grows, a goat eats the grass, a lion eats the goat. Draw arrows showing who eats whom. Then break one link in your mind — if goats vanish, lions go hungry and grass grows wild. Every link matters to the next.
These questions are SLO-based practice questions for this chapter. They are NOT copied from the official textbook exercise, because the official Class 3 book exercise was not available to verify word-for-word. Learn the chapter first, then try every question without looking at the answer. All answers below are the library master's model answers (derived from the chapter text), not copied from an official answer key.
MCQ 1: Which is a living thing?
Answer: Plant — it grows and makes food.
MCQ 2: A camel's habitat is:
Answer: Desert.
MCQ 3: A caterpillar becomes a:
Answer: Butterfly.
MCQ 4: In grass → goat → lion, the goat is eaten by:
Answer: Lion.
MCQ 5: Fish swim with:
Answer: Fins.
Answer: It grows and eats (or breathes).
Answer: Cold snow / Arctic.
Answer: Grass → goat → lion.
Answer: The changes a living thing goes through as it grows.
Answer: Fish need water to breathe and swim; deserts have almost no water.
Answer: Lions would lose food; grass would grow more because nothing eats it.
Answer: Plant flowers for nectar and avoid harmful sprays.
Living things grow, change and depend on their habitats and on each other for food.
Revision guidance: Test five things at home with the four living questions, draw one food chain, and retell the frog life cycle in order.
