In this chapter you will learn about 1. 🧱 What is Matter?, 2. 🪨 Solids, Liquids and Gases, 3. 🔄 Changing States, 4. ⚖️ Properties of Matter — read each topic slowly in English, then in Urdu, and study the diagram before moving on.
Everything around us that takes up space and has weight is matter: books, water, air. Even air is matter, though we cannot see it — it fills a balloon and pushes a sail.
Hold a book, sip water, wave at the air: all three are matter. The test is simple — does it take up space and have weight? Air passes the test even though you cannot see it: it fills a balloon and pushes a sail. If it has weight and space, it is matter.
Solids keep their shape: stone, book, chair. Liquids take the shape of their container and flow: water, milk, juice. Gases spread everywhere and have no fixed shape: air, steam, smoke.
Sort everything into three boxes. Solids keep their shape wherever you put them — stone, book, chair. Liquids flow and take the shape of their container — water, milk, juice. Gases spread everywhere with no shape of their own — air, steam, smoke. Three boxes hold the whole world.
Ice cubes in a glass melt on a hot day: solid ice → liquid water. Put the water in a freezer and it becomes ice again.
Heat changes states: ice melts into water, water boils into steam. Cooling reverses it: steam cools into water, water freezes into ice. Water is special because we see all three states in daily life.
Watch ice on a hot day: solid cubes soften into liquid water. That is heat at work. Now reverse it in your mind: put the water in a freezer and cold turns it back to ice. Heat pushes one way, cold pushes back — matter changes state but stays matter.
Materials differ: iron is hard and heavy, cotton is soft and light, glass breaks easily, rubber stretches. We choose materials by their properties: raincoats are waterproof, woollen clothes keep us warm.
Feel materials and ask what each is good for: iron is hard and heavy, cotton soft and light, glass breaks easily, rubber stretches. Then match the job to the property: a raincoat must be waterproof, woollen clothes must keep warmth in. Good choosing starts with feeling and testing.
These questions are SLO-based practice questions for this chapter. They are NOT copied from the official textbook exercise, because the official Class 3 book exercise was not available to verify word-for-word. Learn the chapter first, then try every question without looking at the answer. All answers below are the library master's model answers (derived from the chapter text), not copied from an official answer key.
MCQ 1: Which is matter?
Answer: Air — it has weight and takes space.
MCQ 2: Milk is a:
Answer: Liquid — it flows and takes container shape.
MCQ 3: Ice melts into:
Answer: Water.
MCQ 4: Which material is waterproof?
Answer: Plastic raincoat.
MCQ 5: Steam is which state?
Answer: Gas.
Answer: Anything with weight that takes up space.
Answer: Stone, water, air.
Answer: It becomes steam (gas).
Answer: Wool keeps us warm.
Answer: Ice melts to water on heating; water boils to steam; steam cools back to water; water freezes to ice.
Answer: Plastic — paper gets wet and tears, plastic is waterproof.
Answer: Yes — it takes space and comes from water; it can condense back to water.
Matter is everything with weight and space, in three states: solid, liquid and gas — and heat can change them.
Revision guidance: Sort ten household things into solid, liquid and gas, then show ice melting and water freezing to a younger child.
