This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 3 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 3 Mathematics book was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 3 book list, and every question below was written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Answers marked here were checked arithmetically; derived workings are labelled as worked steps.

1. Adding 2-Digit and 3-Digit Numbers
🏷 Tags: addition, carrying, columns
ENGLISH

Adding big numbers is easy if you keep your columns straight: ones under ones, tens under tens, hundreds under hundreds. Always start from the ones, on the right, and work leftwards.

If a column adds up to 10 or more, you cannot squeeze two digits into one column — so write the ones digit and carry the ten into the next column. Example: 247 + 135 = 382. Ones: 7 + 5 = 12, write 2, carry 1. Tens: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8. Hundreds: 2 + 1 = 3.

Add 247 + 135 step by stepOnes: 7 + 5 = 12 → write 2, carry 1Tens: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8Hundreds: 2 + 1 = 3Answer: 382
Carry samjho: 247 + 135
2. Subtracting with Borrowing
🏷 Tags: subtraction, borrowing, checking
ENGLISH

Subtraction also starts from the ones. But sometimes the top digit is too small — you cannot take 8 from 3. Then you borrow 1 ten from the tens column: the ones grow by 10 and the tens shrink by 1, and suddenly the subtraction works.

Example: 503 − 178 = 325. After borrowing and working column by column you reach 325. Never trust a subtraction until you check it by adding: 325 + 178 = 503, so the answer is right.

✏️ Worked example / مثال: Worked example: A shop had 486 pencils. It sold 179. How many are left? Write the number sentence first: 486 − 179 = 307 pencils left. Check by adding: 307 + 179 = 486. The check matches the start, so 307 is correct.

Subtract 503 − 178Borrow to make ones big enoughOnes, tens, hundreds step by stepAnswer: 325Check: 325 + 178 = 503
Borrow samjho: 503 − 178
3. Mental Addition and Subtraction
🏷 Tags: mental maths, estimation, rounding
ENGLISH

You do not always need a pencil. Round numbers are friendly: 300 + 200 = 500 in one breath. And rounding to the nearest ten gives you a quick estimate before you calculate properly.

Take 48 + 31. Round it: about 50 + 30 = 80. Now the real answer should be near 80 — and it is 79. If your careful answer came out as 790 or 19, the estimate would shout that something went wrong. Estimate first, and big mistakes get caught early.

Estimate before you calculate48 + 31 ≈ 50 + 30 = 8097 − 41 ≈ 100 − 40 = 60Estimation catches big mistakes
Estimate samjho: 48 + 31 ≈ 50 + 30 = 80 —
4. Word Problems
🏷 Tags: word problems, altogether, left
ENGLISH

A word problem is a puzzle in words, and the first step is always the same: read it twice. Then ask the one question that matters — are we joining things together, or taking something away?

Words are clues. 'Altogether', 'in all' and 'more' usually mean add. 'Left', 'fewer' and 'gave away' usually mean subtract. Once you know the operation, write the number sentence and solve it step by step, just like a sum on its own.

Word problem cluesAdd: altogether, in all, moreSubtract: left, fewer, gave awayStep 1 read, Step 2 choose, Step 3 solve

Multiple Choice Questions

1 456 + 234 = ?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 690. Ones: 6+4=10, write 0, carry 1. Tens: 5+3+1=9. Hundreds: 4+2=6. So 690.

2 700 − 258 = ?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) 442. 700 − 258: borrow through the zeros and work column by column to get 442. Check: 442 + 258 = 700.

3 Estimate 62 + 38.

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 100. Round to the nearest ten: 62 is about 60 and 38 is about 40, and 60 + 40 = 100. (The exact answer, 100, happens to match here.)

4 Which word usually means subtract?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) Left — it means what remains after something is taken away. The others all point to joining, which means add.

5 Check 325 + 178 = 503 by subtracting:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) 503 − 178 = 325 is the check the master answer keys. ⚠️ Warning — this question is flawed: option (d), 503 − 325 = 178, is also arithmetically true (325 + 178 = 503 works both ways), so two options check the addition. The first-listed option (a) is marked correct here, following the master key; in a fair test only one option should be correct.

Short Answer Questions
1 Add: 368 + 121.

Answer: 489. Ones: 8+1=9. Tens: 6+2=8. Hundreds: 3+1=4. No carrying needed: 489. 489

2 Subtract: 900 − 375.

Answer: 525. 900 − 375: borrow through the zeros — ones and tens borrow from hundreds — to get 525.

3 A basket has 245 apples. 138 are eaten. How many left?

Answer: 107 apples. 245 − 138 = 107. Ones: borrow to make 15−8=7; tens: 3−3=0; hundreds: 2−1=1. 107

4 What is 500 − 500?

Answer: 0. A number take away itself always leaves nothing. 0

Long Answer Questions
1 Solve 647 + 258 with carrying steps shown.

Answer: 905. Ones: 7+8=15, write 5, carry 1. Tens: 4+5+1=10, write 0, carry 1. Hundreds: 6+2+1=9.

2 Sara had Rs 800. She bought a book for Rs 365. How much money is left? Check your answer.

Answer: Rs 435 left. 800 − 365 = 435. Check by adding: 435 + 365 = 800, which matches what Sara started with, so 435 is correct.

Think and Answer
1 Ali says 299 + 1 = 300 and 300 − 1 = 299. Is he right? How does this help in subtraction?

Answer: Yes, Ali is right. Adding and subtracting are opposite operations, so one undoes the other. That is exactly why we check a subtraction by adding: if the addition brings back the starting number, the subtraction was correct.

SUMMARY

In this chapter you learned to add 2-digit and 3-digit numbers column by column with carrying, to subtract with borrowing when the top digit is too small, to estimate with rounding before you calculate, and to read word problems twice and pick the operation from clue words. Remember: ones first, carry at 10 or more, borrow when the top digit is too small, and always check by the opposite operation.

Revision guidance: Revision tip: every time you add or subtract, say the columns aloud — ones, tens, hundreds — and check the answer by the opposite operation before you move on. That one habit removes most careless mistakes.
