This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 3 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 3 Mathematics book was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 3 book list, and every question below was written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Answers marked here were checked arithmetically; derived workings are labelled as worked steps.

1. What is a Fraction?

ENGLISH

A fraction is a part of a whole. Cut a pizza into 4 equal parts and eat 1 part, and you have eaten 1/4 — we say one quarter. The fraction tells you two things at once: how many parts the whole was cut into, and how many of those parts you took.

The bottom number is called the denominator: it tells how many equal parts the whole has. The top number is called the numerator: it tells how many parts we take. In 1/4, the denominator is 4 and the numerator is 1.

2. Common Fractions

ENGLISH

Some fractions come up again and again, so learn their names. Half is 1/2, a quarter is 1/4, and three quarters is 3/4. When the top and bottom numbers match, like 2/2 or 4/4, the fraction equals the whole — it is 1, all of it.

A proper fraction has a smaller numerator than denominator, like 2/5 — it is less than a whole. And one rule never changes: fractions are only about equal parts. If the parts are not equal, you cannot call them a fraction at all.

✏️ Worked example / مثال: Worked example: Sara ate 2/8 of a cake and Ali ate 3/8. Together they ate 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8. The cake left is the whole (8/8) take away what they ate: 8/8 − 5/8 = 3/8.

Halves and quarters1/2 = one of two equal parts1/4 = one of four equal parts4/4 = the whole = 1
Halves aur quarters samjho: 1/2
3. Comparing Fractions
🏷 Tags: comparing fractions
ENGLISH

Comparing fractions is easy once you know which number to watch. When the denominators are equal, the bigger numerator wins: 3/8 is bigger than 2/8, because three pieces beat two pieces of the same size.

When the numerators are equal, the rule flips: the smaller denominator wins, because cutting a whole into fewer pieces makes each piece bigger. So 1/2 is bigger than 1/4 — half a pizza is more than a quarter of the same pizza. When in doubt, draw and shade the shapes; your eyes will settle it.

Which is bigger?3/8 > 2/8 (same denominator)1/2 > 1/4 (same numerator)Draw and shade to compare
4. Adding and Subtracting Fractions
🏷 Tags: adding fractions, same denominator
ENGLISH

Adding and subtracting fractions is the easiest part — as long as the denominators are the same. Then you only add or subtract the numerators, and the denominator does not change at all. It is just like adding slices of the same pizza.

So 2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7, and 5/6 − 2/6 = 3/6. The 7 and the 6 stay exactly where they are. The classic mistake is adding the denominators too (2/7 + 3/7 is not 5/14) — never do that.

Same denominator rule2/7 + 3/7 = 5/75/6 − 2/6 = 3/6Denominator stays the same

Multiple Choice Questions

1 In 3/5, the denominator is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 5. The denominator is the bottom number — it tells how many equal parts the whole has.

2 Which is the biggest?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) 1/2. With the same numerator, the smallest denominator gives the biggest part — half a whole beats a third, a quarter or an eighth.

3 2/9 + 4/9 = ?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) 6/9. Add the numerators (2+4=6) and keep the denominator 9. Adding denominators to make 6/18 is the classic mistake.

4 What fraction is shaded if 3 of 6 equal parts are shaded?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) 3/6. Shaded parts on top (numerator 3), total equal parts below (denominator 6).

5 Which equals 1 whole?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 4/4. When numerator equals denominator, you have all the parts — the whole thing.

Short Answer Questions
1 Write the fraction for 1 part out of 5 equal parts.

Answer: 1/5. One part taken (numerator 1) out of five equal parts (denominator 5). 1/5

2 Add: 1/8 + 5/8.

Answer: 6/8. Numerators add (1+5=6), denominator stays 8. 6/8

3 Subtract: 7/10 − 3/10.

Answer: 4/10. Numerators subtract (7−3=4), denominator stays 10. 4/10

4 Is 5/3 a proper fraction? Why not?

Answer: No. A proper fraction has a smaller numerator than denominator, but here 5 is bigger than 3 — so 5/3 is more than a whole.

Long Answer Questions
1 Draw and explain why 1/2 is bigger than 1/3.

Answer: A half splits the whole into 2 big parts; a third splits the same whole into 3 smaller parts. One big half-piece is more than one smaller third-piece, so 1/2 > 1/3. Draw two identical strips, shade one half of one and one third of the other, and you can see it.

2 Ahmed ate 3/10 of a chocolate bar and his sister ate 4/10. How much did they eat together? How much is left?

Answer: Together 7/10: 3/10 + 4/10 = 7/10. Left: the whole bar is 10/10, so 10/10 − 7/10 = 3/10.

Think and Answer
1 Two pizzas are the same size. Ali eats 2/4 of one, Sara eats 1/2 of the other. Who ate more? Why?

Answer: Equal — nobody ate more. 2/4 = 1/2, because two quarters make one half. Cut a pizza into 4 and eat 2 pieces, or cut the same pizza into 2 and eat 1 piece: the amount is the same.

SUMMARY

In this chapter you learned that a fraction is a part of a whole, that the denominator counts the equal parts and the numerator counts the parts taken, that halves and quarters are the fractions you meet most, how to compare fractions (bigger numerator wins when denominators match; smaller denominator wins when numerators match), and how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. Remember: equal parts only, and never add the denominators.

Revision guidance: Revision tip: fold a paper strip into halves, then quarters, and shade 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 on it. Once you can see the pieces, comparing and adding fractions stops feeling like rules and starts feeling obvious.
