This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 3 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 3 Mathematics book was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 3 book list, and every question below was written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Answers marked here were checked arithmetically; derived workings are labelled as worked steps.
Geometry starts with four tiny ideas. A point is a tiny dot: it has a position, but no size at all. A line goes on forever in both directions — it never stops. A line segment is a piece of a line with two ends, like a pencil mark. And a ray starts at one point and goes on forever in one direction only, like a sunbeam.
The ends are what tell them apart. No ends? That is a line. Two ends? A segment. One end? A ray. Say the ends and you have named the shape.
Flat shapes are called 2D shapes, and we sort them by their sides. A triangle has 3 sides, a square and a rectangle have 4 sides, a pentagon has 5, and a circle has 0 straight sides — just one curved edge.
A square is special: all 4 sides are equal and all 4 angles are right angles. A rectangle also has 4 right angles, but only its opposite sides are equal. And when two shapes have exactly the same size and shape, we call them congruent — they would fit perfectly on top of each other.
Solid shapes are called 3D shapes — you can pick them up. A cube has 6 square faces, 12 edges and 8 corners (we call corners vertices). Count them on a dice and you will find all three numbers.
A cuboid is like a box, a sphere is like a ball, a cone is like an ice-cream cone, and a cylinder is like a tin. If you count faces, edges and vertices, you can tell every solid apart without guessing.
Perimeter is the distance all the way around a shape: just add all its sides. A square of side 5 cm has perimeter 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 cm. A triangle with sides 5, 6 and 7 cm has perimeter 5 + 6 + 7 = 18 cm.
Symmetry means one half mirrors the other, like your face in a mirror. A square has 4 lines of symmetry — fold it four ways and the halves match. A rectangle has only 2. Find the fold lines and you have found the symmetry.
1 How many sides does a pentagon have?
Answer: (b) 5. Penta means five — a pentagon always has 5 sides.
2 Which shape has 6 square faces?
Answer: (c) Cube. All six faces of a cube are squares. A cuboid has rectangular faces, a sphere has none, and a cone has one round base.
3 Perimeter of a square with side 7 cm:
Answer: (c) 28 cm. Four equal sides: 7 × 4 = 28, or 7+7+7+7 = 28.
4 A ray has:
Answer: (c) One end. A ray starts at one point and goes on forever in one direction only — like a sunbeam.
5 How many lines of symmetry does a square have?
Answer: (c) 4. Fold a square in half four ways — vertical, horizontal, and both diagonals — and the halves match every time.
Answer: Triangle. Three sides, three corners — that is the definition.
Answer: 8. Four corners on the top face and four on the bottom face. 8
Answer: 18 cm. 5 + 6 + 7 = 18. 18 cm۔ 5+6+7=18۔
Answer: A tin, a glass, or a battery — anything with two round ends and a curved side.
Answer: Square: 4 equal sides, 4 right angles, 4 symmetry lines. Rectangle: opposite sides equal (not all four), 4 right angles, 2 symmetry lines. Both have 4 sides and 4 right angles — the difference is in the sides and the symmetry.
Answer: 32 m. Perimeter = 10 + 6 + 10 + 6 = 32 m, so 32 metres of fence go all the way round.
Answer: Yes. A 5×5 square and a 9×1 rectangle both have perimeter 20 cm (5+5+5+5=20 and 9+1+9+1=20), but their areas are different: 25 square cm for the square and 9 square cm for the rectangle. Same fence, different ground inside — perimeter and area are not the same thing.
In this chapter you learned the line family (point, line, segment, ray — told apart by their ends), the flat 2D shapes sorted by sides (triangle 3, square and rectangle 4, pentagon 5, circle 0 straight sides), the solid 3D shapes (cube 6 faces, 12 edges, 8 corners; cuboid, sphere, cone, cylinder), and perimeter (add all sides) and symmetry (mirror halves). Remember: 2D shapes are flat, 3D shapes are solid, perimeter is the distance around, and symmetry is the fold that matches.
Revision guidance: Revision tip: walk around your home and name one 2D shape and one 3D shape in every room, then find the perimeter of one rectangle (a book, a table) by measuring its sides. Geometry lives in real rooms, not just in books.
