This chapter is about Characteristics and Life Processes of Organisms. Living things grow, eat, breathe, move, feel changes around them and make young ones like themselves. Non-living things do none of these. Plants make their own food, animals eat plants or other animals, and all living things need air, water and food to live.
The first question to ask about anything is simple: is it alive? A living thing shows signs of life — it grows, it eats, it breathes, it moves, it notices changes around it, and in time it makes young ones like itself. A stone, a chair or a glass of water shows none of these signs, so we call them non-living.
Food looks different for plants and animals, but every living thing must eat in some way. Plants make their own food, while animals eat plants or other animals. And whatever the living thing is, it cannot live without air, water and food — take one away and life stops.
Step by step: first, look for the signs of life — does it grow, eat and breathe? Next, ask how it gets food: does it make its own food like a plant, or eat plants or animals like an animal? Last, name the three things it cannot live without: air, water and food. If a thing shows the signs and needs these three, it is alive.
Three words carry this whole chapter, so learn them word for word. An organism is a living thing — a plant, an animal or even a tiny germ counts. Growth means getting bigger and changing as time passes: the seed does not stay a seed, and the chick does not stay a chick.
Reproduction is the third word, and it means making young ones like oneself. Notice how the three words fit together: an organism grows, and when it is grown it reproduces, so life goes on. If you can say all three meanings without looking, this chapter is already half learned.
You do not need a laboratory to see this chapter — your own home shows it. A seed in the soil grows into a plant, and a chick in the yard grows into a hen. Both were small, both changed, and both are alive. Put a stone beside them and wait as long as you like: it never grows, it never eats, and it never makes a baby stone.
Now find one more example yourself and say it in your own words to a friend. The best test of this chapter is not repeating the book's example — it is spotting a new one, like a kitten growing into a cat, and explaining why it counts as alive.
This chapter is useful every single day, because once you know what living things need, you know how to look after them. A plant needs water and light, an animal needs food and care, and your own body needs good food, rest and air. A child who understands life processes does not pull up a seedling for fun or leave a pet hungry — they know a living thing is not a toy.
It works the other way too: when you feel tired or hungry, you are feeling a life process yourself. Your body is asking for what it needs, just like a plant wilting for water. Knowing this helps you take your own health seriously.
Close the book now and try this: say the three key words and their meanings without peeking. Organism — a living thing, like a plant, animal or germ. Growth — getting bigger and changing as time passes. Reproduction — making young ones like oneself. If one word slips, open the chapter, read it once more, and try again — that is how revision works.
Then tell the main idea of this chapter in three sentences: what living things do, how they differ from non-living things, and what they need to live. Three honest sentences from memory are worth more than a whole page copied with the book open.

Knowing life processes helps us take care of plants, animals and our own bodies.
Start with the example: A seed grows into a plant, a chick grows into a hen, but a stone never grows or eats. Then explain the key words: Organism means a living thing, like a plant, animal or germ; Growth means getting bigger and changing as time passes.
Living things show the signs of life: they grow, eat, breathe, move, feel changes and make young ones like themselves, while non-living things do none of these. Plants make their own food and animals eat plants or other animals, and every living thing needs air, water and food. The three key words are organism (a living thing), growth (getting bigger and changing) and reproduction (making young ones like oneself) — and the daily examples are a seed becoming a plant and a chick becoming a hen, against a stone that never changes.
Revision tip: Cover the key words and say all three meanings aloud. Then point at five things in your room and sort them into living and non-living, giving one reason for each. Last, write the three things every living thing needs — air, water and food — from memory.
