This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 4 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 4 Mathematics textbook was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 4 book list, and every exercise question below is taken from the chapter master, written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Worked steps added to answers are labelled as worked steps and were checked arithmetically.

1. Introduction to Whole Numbers and Operations
🏷 Tags: whole numbers, place value, rounding, operations
ENGLISH

Whole numbers are the numbers we count with, starting from 0 and going on without end: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on. There is no largest whole number, because you can always add one more. In Class 4 we work with whole numbers up to 1,000,000, which is one million.

The four operations are the four things we do with numbers: addition puts groups together, subtraction takes away, multiplication adds the same group again and again, and division shares equally. Every daily problem in this chapter is really one of these four, dressed up in a story.

Place value is what makes big numbers readable. In 345,672 the 3 does not mean three, it means three hundred thousand, because of where it stands. Once you can name what each digit is worth, the number stops looking scary.

Example: 345,672 = 300,000 + 40,000 + 5,000 + 600 + 70 + 2. Read it as three hundred forty-five thousand, six hundred seventy-two.

Place Value of 345,6723Lakh410-Th5Th6H7T2O
2. Important Words
🏷 Tags: place value, rounding, operation
ENGLISH

Place value is the value of a digit because of its position in a number. In 5,432 the 5 is worth 5,000, the 4 is worth 400, the 3 is worth 30 and the 2 is worth 2. The same digit means something different in a different place, so always look at the place first, then the digit.

Rounding means writing a number to the nearest ten, hundred or thousand. Look at the digit just to the right of the place you are rounding to: if it is 5 or more, round up, and if it is less than 5, stay. So 4,678 rounded to the nearest hundred is 4,700, and to the nearest thousand it is 5,000.

Operation is simply the name for addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. When a question says “find the total”, it is asking for addition; “how many are left” means subtraction; “equal groups” points to multiplication or division.

Example: Round 3,450 to the nearest hundred: the tens digit is 5, so round up — 3,500. Check: 3,450 sits exactly halfway, and the rule says 5 rounds up.

Rounding RuleLook right→5 or more: up→Less than 5:stay→Write answer
3. Example from Daily Lifeروزمرہ زندگی سے مثال
🏷 Tags: addition, column method, daily example
ENGLISH

If Ali has 245 marbles and buys 130 more, he has 245 + 130 = 375 marbles. Do it in columns, ones first: 5 + 0 = 5, then 4 + 3 = 7, then 2 + 1 = 3. Nothing needs carrying here, so the answer simply reads down the columns: 375.

Try the same habit with a subtraction story. A shopkeeper has 860 rupees and spends 275 rupees: 860 − 275 = 585. Take it in steps if columns feel hard: 860 − 200 = 660, then 660 − 75 = 585. The steps and the column method must agree, and here they do.

Now find one example of your own and tell it to a friend in your own words. The best examples are the ones you have actually done: pocket money saved, pages read, or steps walked. Saying it aloud is what turns a sum into understanding.

Example: Column check: 245 + 130. Ones 5+0=5, tens 4+3=7, hundreds 2+1=3 → 375. ✓

4. Why It Matters
🏷 Tags: money, measuring, sharing fairly
ENGLISH

Whole numbers and operations run almost everything in a normal day. Counting money at a shop, checking whether your change is right, and saving a little each week all need addition and subtraction done correctly.

Measuring is the same skill in another shape: how many metres of cloth, how many pages left in a book, how many days until a holiday. And sharing fairly is division in real life: 20 toffees shared among 4 friends means 20 ÷ 4 = 5 each, no quarrel, no leftovers.

A child who can do these four operations without fear can check the world around them instead of just believing it. That is why this chapter comes first: every later chapter leans on it.

Example: Sharing check: 20 ÷ 4 = 5, and 4 × 5 = 20, so the sharing is fair and complete.

Sharing 20 ToffeesAli5Ahmed5Sara5Mina5
5. Remember and Revise
🏷 Tags: revision, place value, rounding, operation
ENGLISH

Remember three things and this chapter is yours. Place value: a digit is worth what its place says. Rounding: look right, 5 or more goes up. Operation: addition joins, subtraction takes away, multiplication repeats a group, division shares equally.

Close the book and tell the main idea of this chapter in three sentences. If you can say what whole numbers are, what the four operations do, and one example from your own day, you have really learned it — reading it again is not the same as saying it.

Quick self-check before the exercise: what is 1,000,000 in digits, and how many digits does it have? It has seven digits, a 1 followed by six zeros, and it is the smallest seven-digit whole number. If that felt easy, you are ready.

Example: Self-check: 999,999 + 1 = 1,000,000. One more than the largest six-digit number is one million.

Revise in 3 StepsSay it aloud→One example→Check answer→

Multiple Choice Questions

1 What does 'Place value' mean?

Answer / جواب

Answer: the value of a digit because of its position in a number. This is the master definition of place value: the digit's worth comes from its position. The other options are the definitions of rounding and of operation.

2 What does 'Rounding' mean?

Answer / جواب

Answer: writing a number to the nearest ten, hundred or thousand. Rounding is exactly this: writing a number to the nearest ten, hundred or thousand. The other options describe place value and operation.

3 What does 'Operation' mean?

Answer / جواب

Answer: addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. An operation is one of the four: addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. The other options are the meanings of place value and rounding.

4 Which of these is the main topic of this chapter?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Whole Numbers and Operations. The chapter title in the master is Whole Numbers and Operations, so this is the main topic. The other names are the next chapters.

5 Which of these is NOT a key word of this chapter?

Answer / جواب

Answer: triangle. Place value and Rounding are this chapter's key words, so the odd one out is triangle. Note: triangle is a Geometry word from Chapter 6, not a key word of this chapter.

Short Answer Questions
1 What is the main idea of 'Whole Numbers and Operations'?

Answer: Whole numbers are 0, 1, 2, 3 and all counting numbers after them. We use the four operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — to solve daily problems with whole numbers up to 1,000,000. Worked structure: first name the topic, then say its definition in one sentence, then give the example. That order is what the answer above follows.

2 Write the meanings of 'Place value' and 'Rounding'.

Answer: Place value: the value of a digit because of its position in a number. Rounding: writing a number to the nearest ten, hundred or thousand. Worked structure: write each key word (Place value and Rounding) with its meaning, one at a time, and check each meaning against the Important Words section.

3 Give one example from daily life related to 'Whole Numbers and Operations'.

Answer: If Ali has 245 marbles and buys 130 more, he has 245 + 130 = 375 marbles. Worked structure: take the daily-life example from the chapter, write its numbers and its working, then say in one line what it shows.

Long Answer Questions
1 Explain 'Whole Numbers and Operations' in your own words with examples.

Answer: Whole numbers are 0, 1, 2, 3 and all counting numbers after them. We use the four operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — to solve daily problems with whole numbers up to 1,000,000. If Ali has 245 marbles and buys 130 more, he has 245 + 130 = 375 marbles. Worked structure: definition first, then the worked example with its numbers, then one daily-life use.
