This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 4 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 4 Mathematics textbook was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 4 book list, and every exercise question below is taken from the chapter master, written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Worked steps added to answers are labelled as worked steps and were checked arithmetically.

1. Introduction to Decimals
🏷 Tags: decimals, decimal point, tenths, hundredths
ENGLISH

A decimal is another way to write a fraction with denominator 10 or 100. Instead of writing 5/10, we write 0.5, and instead of 25/100, we write 0.25. Same value, shorter writing, and much easier for money and measuring.

The point (.) separates whole numbers from parts. In 3.5, the 3 is whole and the 5 means 5 tenths, that is 5/10. Read it as “three point five”, never “three dot five” in class answers, and never as thirty-five.

Tenths and hundredths are the first two places after the point. The first place after the point counts tenths, the second counts hundredths. So in 4.37, the 3 means 3 tenths and the 7 means 7 hundredths.

Example: Convert: 7/10 = 0.7, 3/100 = 0.03, and 1.25 = 1 whole + 25 hundredths = 125/100.

Decimal point — the point that separates whole numbers from parts. Everything to its left is whole, everything to its right is a part of one whole. Move the point and you change the value completely, so never lose it.

Tenths — the first place after the decimal point; parts of ten. One whole cut into 10 equal parts gives tenths, so 0.8 means 8 of those 10 parts.

Hundredths — the second place after the decimal point; parts of hundred. One whole cut into 100 equal parts gives hundredths, so 0.09 means only 9 of those 100 tiny parts, much less than 0.9.

Example: Read 0.65: 6 tenths and 5 hundredths. As a fraction: 65/100. As money: 65 paisa.

Reading 0.65Point = divide→6 = tenths→5 = hundredths→65/100 total
Tenths vs hundredths
3. Example from Daily Lifeروزمرہ زندگی سے مثال

ENGLISH

Rs 12.50 means 12 rupees and 50 paisa, because 50 paisa is half a rupee, that is 0.50. The point tells you where rupees end and paisa begins: left of the point is rupees, right of the point is paisa.

Shops use decimals because paisa is hundredths of a rupee: 1 paisa = Rs 0.01, so 25 paisa = Rs 0.25 and 75 paisa = Rs 0.75. If a price says Rs 9.75, you pay 9 rupees and 75 paisa, not 975 of anything.

Look around you and find one more example of your own, then tell it to a friend in your own words. Read a price tag, a weight on a packet, or a petrol price board, and point to the point and say what each side means.

Example: Add money: Rs 12.50 + Rs 7.25. Line up the points: 12.50 + 7.25 = 19.75, that is 19 rupees and 75 paisa. ✓

4. Why It Matters
🏷 Tags: money, weights, measurements
ENGLISH

Decimals are used for money, weights and measurements everywhere in daily life. You cannot buy, weigh or measure precisely without them: a shop cannot charge half a rupee fairly if it can only write whole rupees.

Weights use the same idea: 2.5 kg means 2 kg and 500 g, because 0.5 of a kilogram is 500 g. Lengths do too: 1.75 m means 1 m and 75 cm. The point works the same everywhere; only the unit changes.

A child who reads decimals correctly is never fooled by a price. Rs 9.50 is less than Rs 10, and 0.5 kg is exactly half a kilogram, not “about half” and not 5 kg. Precision is what decimals are for.

Example: Convert weights: 0.5 kg = 500 g, 2.25 kg = 2 kg 250 g, and 1.5 L = 1 L 500 mL.

ENGLISH

Remember: the decimal point separates whole numbers from parts. Tenths is the first place after the point, parts of ten. Hundredths is the second place after the point, parts of hundred.

Close the book and tell the main idea of this chapter in three sentences. A strong answer names the point, explains tenths and hundredths with one example each, and gives one money example like Rs 12.50.

One trap to avoid for ever: 0.25 is not bigger than 0.5. More digits after the point does not mean a bigger number. Compare place by place: tenths first — 2 tenths is less than 5 tenths, so 0.25 is smaller than 0.5, whatever comes after.

Example: Compare: 0.5 = 50/100 and 0.25 = 25/100, so 0.5 > 0.25. Tenths decide before hundredths are even looked at.

SUMMARY

In this chapter you learned that a decimal is a fraction with denominator 10 or 100 written with a point, that the point separates whole numbers from parts, that tenths come first and hundredths second after the point, and that money like Rs 12.50 is the decimal you meet every day.

Revision guidance: Read one price tag and one packet weight aloud every day, pointing to the point and naming the tenths and hundredths — and never add decimals without lining up the points.
