This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 4 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 4 Mathematics textbook was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 4 book list, and every exercise question below is taken from the chapter master, written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Worked steps added to answers are labelled as worked steps and were checked arithmetically.

1. Introduction to Measurements
🏷 Tags: measurement, length, mass, capacity, standard units
ENGLISH

Measurement means finding how long, heavy or full something is, using standard units. Standard matters: if everyone measured with their own hand, the same table would be “five hands” for a child and “four hands” for an adult, and nobody could agree. Standard units end that argument.

Length is measured in metres and centimetres. A metre is about one big step, and a centimetre is about the width of your little finger nail. 1 metre = 100 centimetres, so a 2-metre ribbon is 200 centimetres long.

Mass is measured in kilograms and grams, and capacity in litres and millilitres. 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams, and 1 litre = 1,000 millilitres. We must use the same unit for a fair measurement: never compare kilograms with grams until you have converted one of them.

Example: Convert before comparing: 2 kg = 2,000 g, so 2 kg is heavier than 1,500 g. And 3 L = 3,000 mL, so 3 L holds more than 2,500 mL.

Three MeasurementsLength: m, cm→Mass: kg, g→Capacity: L,mL→Same unitfirst
2. Important Words
🏷 Tags: length, mass, capacity
ENGLISH

Length — how long something is; measured in m and cm. Your pencil, your height and the road to school are all lengths, just at very different sizes.

Mass — how heavy something is; measured in kg and g. Mass is the right word in school, even though people say “weight” at home: your school bag has a mass of about 3 kg.

Capacity — how much a container can hold; measured in L and mL. A jug's capacity is not the water inside it right now; it is how much it could hold when full.

Example: Which unit? A pencil's length is about 15 cm, a bag's mass about 3 kg, and a water bottle's capacity about 1 L. Pick the unit before you pick the number.

Pick the UnitLong? m, cm→Heavy? kg, g→Holds? L, mL→Then measure
3. Example from Daily Lifeروزمرہ زندگی سے مثال
🏷 Tags: kilograms, grams, comparing masses
ENGLISH

A school bag of 3 kg is heavier than a book of 500 g, because 3 kg = 3,000 g, and 3,000 is much more than 500. The trick is always the same: convert to the smaller unit first, then compare plain numbers.

The same trick works for length and capacity. A ribbon of 2 m is 200 cm, longer than a 150 cm ribbon. A bottle of 2 L is 2,000 mL, more than a 750 mL jug. Convert, then compare — never compare the raw numbers 3 and 500 as if they were the same thing.

Look around you and find one more example of your own, then tell it to a friend in your own words. Weigh two bags, compare two bottles, or measure two pencils, and always say the unit with the number.

Example: How much heavier? 3,000 g − 500 g = 2,500 g, so the bag is heavier than the book by 2,500 g, which is 2 kg 500 g.

Bag vs Book (grams)School bag3000Book500
4. Why It Matters
🏷 Tags: shopkeepers, tailors, builders, cooks
ENGLISH

Correct measurement helps shopkeepers, tailors, builders and cooks do their work fairly and correctly. A shopkeeper who weighs honestly keeps customers; one who cheats with a false weight loses them, and the law can punish them too.

A tailor measures in centimetres because a shirt even 5 cm too short is unwearable. A builder measures in metres because a wall even a little out of place will not fit the roof. Small errors in measuring become big problems in the finished thing.

A cook measures too: 250 mL of milk is not “some milk”, it is a quarter of a litre, and doubling a recipe means doubling every measure. Fairness, fit and taste all sit on the same skill: measuring right.

Example: Tailor check: a sleeve of 45 cm plus a cuff of 5 cm is 50 cm in total. Always add in the same unit: cm + cm = cm.

Who Measures?Shop: kg, g→Tailor: cm→Builder: m→Cook: mL, L
5. Remember and Revise
🏷 Tags: revision, length, mass, capacity, conversions
ENGLISH

Remember: length is how long something is, in m and cm. Mass is how heavy something is, in kg and g. Capacity is how much a container can hold, in L and mL. And the golden rule: convert to the same unit before you compare or add.

Close the book and tell the main idea of this chapter in three sentences. Name the three kinds of measurement, give one unit pair for each, and say the bag-and-book example in your own words, with the conversion.

Quick self-check: how many grams are in 4 kg? Multiply by 1,000: 4 × 1,000 = 4,000 g. How many centimetres in 3 m? Multiply by 100: 3 × 100 = 300 cm. If both felt easy, the conversions are learned.

Example: Self-check: 1 L 250 mL = 1,250 mL. And 2 m 30 cm = 230 cm. Mixed units always become one unit first.

Short Answer Questions
1 What is the main idea of 'Measurements'?

Answer: Measurement means finding how long, heavy or full something is, using standard units. Length is measured in metres and centimetres, mass in kilograms and grams, and capacity in litres and millilitres. We must use the same unit for a fair measurement. Worked structure: first name the topic, then say its definition in one sentence, then give the example. That order is what the answer above follows.

2 Write the meanings of 'Length' and 'Mass'.

Answer: Length: how long something is; measured in m and cm. Mass: how heavy something is; measured in kg and g. Worked structure: write each key word (Length and Mass) with its meaning, one at a time, and check each meaning against the Important Words section.

3 Give one example from daily life related to 'Measurements'.

Answer: A school bag of 3 kg is heavier than a book of 500 g, because 3 kg = 3000 g. Worked structure: take the daily-life example from the chapter, write its numbers and its working, then say in one line what it shows.

1 Explain 'Measurements' in your own words with examples.

Answer: Measurement means finding how long, heavy or full something is, using standard units. Length is measured in metres and centimetres, mass in kilograms and grams, and capacity in litres and millilitres. We must use the same unit for a fair measurement. A school bag of 3 kg is heavier than a book of 500 g, because 3 kg = 3000 g. Worked structure: definition first, then the worked example with its numbers, then one daily-life use. Read the answer above in that order and you will see all three parts.

2 Why is 'Measurements' important in our life? Give reasons.

Answer: Correct measurement helps shopkeepers, tailors, builders and cooks do their work fairly and correctly. Worked structure: give two or three separate reasons, each in its own sentence, and finish with one line saying what happens without this skill.

Think and Explain
1 How would you explain 'Measurements' to a younger brother or sister?

Answer: Start with the example: A school bag of 3 kg is heavier than a book of 500 g, because 3 kg = 3000 g. Then explain the key words: Length means how long something is; measured in m and cm; Mass means how heavy something is; measured in kg and g. Worked structure for teaching a younger child: start with the chapter's example, then explain the key words in the simplest words you know, then ask the child to say it back to you.

SUMMARY

In this chapter you learned to measure length in metres and centimetres, mass in kilograms and grams, and capacity in litres and millilitres — and the golden rule that you must convert to the same unit before comparing, as the 3 kg bag against the 500 g book showed.

Revision guidance: Measure one thing at home every day — a pencil, a bag, a bottle — and write the number with its unit, converting it once into the smaller unit.
