Unit 12 introduces our national animal, the Markhor: a wild goat of the northern mountains, famous for its spiral horns. It reminds us to protect Pakistan's wildlife.
یونٹ 12 ہمارے قومی جانور، مارخور سے متعارف کراتا ہے: شمالی پہاڑوں کا جنگلی بکرا، جو اپنے بل دار سینگوں کے لیے مشہور ہے۔ یہ ہمیں پاکستان کی جنگلی حیات کی حفاظت یاد دلاتا ہے۔
This unit teaches us through a story or a text, and we practise reading, speaking and writing about it.
Read the text slowly, look at the pictures, and guess the meaning of new words before asking the teacher.
A national animal is a country's chosen portrait of itself: Pakistan chose a wild goat of the steep northern mountains, not a tame animal of the plains, and the choice says something — bravery, climbing, surviving where life is hard. Read the unit asking why this animal and not another, and the facts stop being a list and start being a choice.
The Markhor's story is also a warning story: hunting and lost habitat made it endangered, which means at risk of disappearing forever. A country that loses its national animal loses part of its natural heritage, and that is why protection is a duty, not a hobby.
Learn the new words of this unit with their meanings and use each word in your own sentence.
Keep a word bank in your notebook: word, meaning, and one sentence. Revise it every week.
national — belonging to the whole country. Example: The Markhor is our national animal.
spiral — curling round and round like a screw. Example: The Markhor has spiral horns.
habitat — the natural home of an animal. Example: Mountains are the Markhor's habitat.
endangered — at risk of disappearing forever. Example: Hunting made the Markhor endangered.
Grammar: reading a short factual text and answering questions from it.
We learn animal vocabulary: horns, hooves, habitat, endangered, protected.
Reading a factual text is a hunt with three questions: who is it about, where does it live, why does it matter? The Markhor text answers all three in two sentences — a wild goat with long spiral horns, living on steep mountains in northern Pakistan — and every short question in the exercise is one of those three questions in disguise.
Animal words are the tools of that hunt: horns are what it fights and climbs with, hooves are what it stands on, habitat is where it lives, endangered is its danger, protected is its hope. Learn the five words and the text opens by itself.
Every unit ends with a message for life. Think about how you can follow that message at home and at school.
Practise writing a short paragraph on the unit's theme: one topic sentence, three supporting sentences, and one ending sentence.
A paragraph about the Markhor is a portrait in three strokes plus a promise: what it is, where it lives, why it must be protected, and then the promise that future children should also see it. The master's model ends on that promise, and your paragraph should too, because protection without a future is only description.
The second long question — why does a country choose a national animal — is answered with two reasons, honour and reminder: to honour a special animal of its land, and to remind people to protect nature. Two reasons, in order, and the answer is complete.
Revise with the animal's own body: point to horns, hooves, home, danger, hope — spiral horns, strong legs, steep mountains, hunting, protection — and say one sentence for each. Five points, five sentences, and the chapter is in your hands.
And remember the think question's answer for life, not just for marks: wild animals belong in nature, and keeping them as pets harms them and breaks the law. That sentence is the chapter's conscience.
Exercise Questions — with Answers (from the library masters).
