Our body is made of organs, and organs that work together form a system. In this chapter we learn how the respiratory and circulatory systems keep us alive, and how our body receives information from the world around us.
An organ is a part of the body that does a special job, like the heart or the lungs.
When many organs work together for one big job, they form an organ system. The digestive system, for example, breaks food into energy.
Step by step: first, name one organ and its single job — the heart pumps, the lungs take in air. Next, look for organs that share one big job: the heart plus the blood vessels form the circulatory system, just as the mouth, stomach and intestines form the digestive system. Finally, remember that systems do not work alone — digestion breaks food down, and circulation carries the food and oxygen to every part of the body.
We breathe in air through the nose. The air goes down the windpipe into the lungs, where oxygen passes into the blood.
When we breathe out, carbon dioxide leaves the body. Breathing faster during running gives the body more oxygen.
Step by step: air comes in through the nose, which warms and cleans it. It travels down the windpipe into the lungs. Inside the lungs are tiny air sacs, and oxygen passes from these sacs into the blood. The blood carries oxygen to the whole body, picks up carbon dioxide, and breathing out throws that waste gas away. When you run, your muscles need more oxygen, so you breathe faster — that is your body asking for more fuel.
The heart is a strong muscle that pumps blood all around the body.
Blood carries oxygen and food to every part, and carries waste away. Arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins bring it back.
Step by step: the heart is a strong muscle that never gets tired of pumping, day and night. It pushes blood out through arteries to every part of the body. The blood drops off oxygen and food, picks up waste, and comes back through veins to the heart. After exercise the heart beats faster because the muscles are asking for oxygen and food more quickly — count your heartbeat before and after running and you will feel the difference yourself.
Our five senses — sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch — collect information from our surroundings.
Nerves carry these messages to the brain, and the brain decides what to do. This is why we pull our hand away from a hot plate.
Step by step: a sense organ catches information — eyes see light, ears hear sound, the nose smells, the tongue tastes, the skin feels. A nerve carries that message to the brain like a telephone wire. The brain decides what to do, and sends an order back — that is why your hand pulls away from a hot plate before you even think about it. Smell also keeps you safe: smoke, a gas leak or spoiled food warns you through your nose.
MCQ 1: Q1. Which organ pumps blood around the body?
(b) Heart.
MCQ 2: Q2. Oxygen enters the blood in the:
(c) Lungs.
MCQ 3: Q3. How many sense organs do humans have?
(c) Five.
MCQ 4: Q4. Which gas do we breathe out?
(c) Carbon dioxide.
A group of organs that work together to do one big job in the body.
Because the body needs more oxygen for energy during exercise.
Nerves carry messages between sense organs, the brain and the body.
Arteries carry blood away from the heart; veins bring blood back to the heart.
Air enters through the nose, passes down the windpipe into the lungs, and oxygen moves from the tiny air sacs into the blood, which carries it to the whole body.
The lungs put oxygen into the blood and the heart pumps that blood everywhere, so every cell gets oxygen and gives back carbon dioxide to be breathed out.
The muscles need more oxygen and food during exercise, so the heart pumps faster to deliver them quickly.
They could not smell smoke, gas leaks or spoiled food, so smelling protects us from danger.
Organs to organ systems (1): an organ does one special job, and organs that work together for one big job form a system — the digestive system breaks food into energy, the circulatory system moves blood. Respiratory system (2): air enters through the nose, goes down the windpipe into the lungs, oxygen passes into the blood from tiny air sacs, and carbon dioxide leaves when we breathe out; running makes us breathe faster because the body needs more oxygen. Circulatory system (3): the heart is a strong muscle that pumps blood everywhere; blood carries oxygen and food to every part and brings waste back; arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins bring it back. Receiving information (4): our five senses collect information, nerves carry messages to the brain, and the brain decides — pulling a hand away from a hot plate is a fast example.
Revision tip: Draw the journey of air from nose to blood in four arrows. Make a small table: arteries vs veins, and list the five senses with their organs. Then answer: why does your heart beat faster after exercise, in two sentences, without looking.
