Microorganisms are living things so small that we cannot see them without a microscope. Some are useful, but some cause diseases, so we must learn how they spread and how to stop them.
The main groups are bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa.
Bacteria are single cells found almost everywhere. Viruses are even smaller and need a living host to grow.
Step by step: first, remember the size rule — if you need a microscope to see it, it is a microorganism. Next, sort them into four groups: bacteria are single-celled and live almost everywhere; viruses are much smaller and can only grow inside another living cell; fungi include yeasts and moulds; protozoa are single-celled and move like tiny animals. Last, never judge by group alone — some bacteria cause disease and some make food, so ask what this germ actually does.
Germs can cause flu, cholera, malaria and skin infections.
Some diseases spread from person to person, while others spread through dirty water, food or insect bites.
Step by step: a germ needs a road into the body. It can ride in droplets when someone coughs or sneezes, pass by touch, hide in dirty water or food, or travel by insect — a mosquito can carry the malaria germ. Once inside, the germ grows and the body reacts, and that reaction is what we feel as illness. That is why the same dirty water can make a whole family sick: the road was shared.
Washing hands with soap, drinking clean water and covering coughs stop many germs.
Vaccination trains the body to fight a germ before it can make us sick. Mosquito nets and clean surroundings stop insect-borne diseases.
Step by step: block each road, one habit at a time. Wash hands with soap, especially before eating and after the toilet. Drink clean, boiled water and keep food covered so flies cannot sit on it. Keep the house clean and sleep under a mosquito net. Get children vaccinated: a vaccine trains the body to recognise a particular germ, so it can fight fast if the real germ ever comes. If someone is ill, keep some distance and do not share their towel or glass.
Not all germs are harmful. Bacteria help make yoghurt and cheese, and yeast helps bread rise.
Microorganisms also act as decomposers: they break down dead plants and animals and return nutrients to the soil.
Step by step: look for the helpful side before you call every germ an enemy. Yeast makes bread rise, bacteria turn milk into yoghurt, and decomposers break dead plants and animals down so their nutrients return to the soil. Farmers depend on that rich soil. So the honest rule is: germs are foes when they cause disease, and friends when they make food or healthy soil — the same tiny world does both jobs.

Through coughs and touch, and through dirty water or food.
A medicine that trains the body to fight a particular germ.
Useful: yeast for bread. Harmful: cholera bacteria in dirty water.
By washing hands, drinking clean boiled water, covering food, keeping the house clean, using mosquito nets and getting children vaccinated.
They are foes when they cause disease, but friends when they make yoghurt, bread and rich soil through decomposition.
Wrong medicine may not kill the germ and can harm the body; a doctor knows the right medicine and dose.
Germs grow fast on sugar, and sugary food also harms teeth and health when eaten too often.
Main groups (1): microorganisms are tiny living things seen only with a microscope — bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Diseases (2): diseases spread by touch, coughs, dirty water or food, and insects such as mosquitoes. Prevention (3): washing hands, drinking clean boiled water, covering food, keeping the house clean, using mosquito nets and getting vaccinated block those roads into the body. Useful role (4): yeast makes bread, bacteria make yoghurt, and decomposers return nutrients to the soil — germs can be friends as well as foes. Vaccination is not a cure for a germ already inside; it is training given beforehand, and medicines should only be taken on a doctor's advice.
Revision tip: Make a two-column table — friends vs foes — with two examples each. Then list the five prevention habits in order and explain, for each one, which road of spread it blocks.
