An ecosystem is a place where living things and non-living things live and work together. Plants make food, animals eat plants or other animals, and decomposers recycle everything back to the soil.
A food chain shows who eats whom: grass is eaten by a goat, and the goat may be eaten by a lion.
Energy moves along the chain from the Sun to plants and then to animals.
Step by step: first, list the living things in a place — plants, animals, germs — and then the non-living things around them — sunlight, water, air, soil. An ecosystem is both lists together, because they depend on each other. Plants need sunlight, water and soil; animals need plants or other animals for food; and all of them need clean air and water. Change one part — dry up the water — and the whole community feels it.
In real life many food chains join together into a food web, because most animals eat more than one kind of food.
If prey animals become few, predators also become hungry and few. The two populations rise and fall together.
Step by step: start every food chain at the Sun, because plants make food from sunlight. A green plant is a producer. An animal that eats plants is a herbivore and a first consumer; an animal that eats the herbivore is a carnivore and a second consumer. Draw it with arrows that mean 'is eaten by': Sun → grass → grasshopper → frog → snake. Notice the direction: energy flows one way, from Sun to plant to animal, and never flows back.
Decomposers like bacteria and fungi break down dead bodies and waste.
Only a part of the energy passes to the next level; much is used up for movement, warmth and life, so higher levels have less energy.
Step by step: in real life no animal eats only one thing, so food chains join into a food web — a mouse may eat grass and seeds, and may itself be eaten by a snake or an owl. Predator and prey keep each other in balance: if wolves disappear, deer increase first and eat too much grass, and then the grass becomes scarce. Decomposers finish the story: they break dead matter down and return nutrients to the soil, so new plants can grow and the cycle starts again.
Smoke, plastic, dirty water and poisonous chemicals from human activities enter ecosystems.
Polluted water kills fish, polluted air harms lungs, and plastic harms animals that eat it by mistake.
Step by step: follow a poison to see why pollution is so harmful. Factory smoke falls on fields, farm sprays wash into rivers, and plastic waste is swallowed by animals. The poison enters a food chain and moves up, link by link, growing stronger in bigger animals. That is why one dirty drain can harm fish, the birds that eat the fish, and people too. Children can help by planting trees, not littering, saving water, and telling others — small habits protect the whole web.

MCQ 1: Q1. Which of these is a producer?
(c) Green plant.
MCQ 2: Q2. A food web is:
(b) Many joined food chains.
MCQ 3: Q3. Decomposers mainly:
(b) Break down dead matter.
MCQ 4: Q4. Pollution harms ecosystems mainly because:
(b) Poisons enter food chains.
A community of living things together with the non-living things around them.
Plants use sunlight to make their food.
Grass-eaters starve, then their predators starve too, and the whole web is disturbed.
Factory smoke and plastic waste thrown into water or land.
Sun → grass → grasshopper → frog → snake. The Sun gives energy, grass makes food, and each animal eats the one before it, passing energy along.
Factories release smoke and chemicals, farmers' sprays wash into rivers, and plastic waste is eaten by animals; poisons then move up the food chain.
Deer would increase first and eat too much grass, so grass would become scarce.
By planting trees, not littering, saving water and telling others about pollution.
Ecosystem (intro): an ecosystem joins a community of living things with the non-living things around them — sunlight, water, air and soil. Food chains (1): energy moves from the Sun to producers (green plants) to consumers, e.g. Sun → grass → grasshopper → frog → snake, and each animal eats the one before it. Food webs and predator–prey (2): many joined food chains make a web, and predators and prey balance each other — remove the predator and the prey grows until its own food runs short. Decomposers and energy transfer (3): decomposers break dead matter and recycle nutrients to the soil, while energy is lost at every step and never returns. Pollution (4): smoke, sprays and plastic put poisons into food chains, so harm spreads link by link.
Revision tip: Draw a four-link food chain and then turn it into a small web by adding one more eater to the middle link. Explain in three sentences what happens if all the grass disappears.
