ENGLISH

Light travels from luminous objects and lets us see the world. Sound is made by vibrations and travels through air, water and solids to reach our ears.

1. Luminous and Non-Luminous Objects
🏷 Tags: luminous, non-luminous, Sun, bulb, candle, Moon reflects light
ENGLISH

Luminous objects make their own light, like the Sun, a bulb and a flame.

Non-luminous objects do not make light; we see them only when light from another object falls on them, like the Moon and a book.

STEP BY STEP

Step by step: ask one question about each object — does it make its own light? The Sun, a burning candle, a glowing bulb and a firefly do, so they are luminous. The Moon, a table and a book do not; we see them only because light from somewhere else falls on them and bounces to our eyes, so they are non-luminous. The Moon looks bright at night only because it reflects sunlight — it is a mirror in the sky, not a lamp.

Luminous vs Non-LuminousSun, bulb, flamemake lightMoon, book reflectlightvs
2. Transparent, Opaque and Translucent Objects
🏷 Tags: transparent, translucent, opaque, shadow, glass, butter paper, wooden door
ENGLISH

Transparent objects let all light pass, like clear glass and clean water.

Opaque objects block all light and make shadows, like wood and iron. Translucent objects let only some light pass, like frosted glass.

STEP BY STEP

Step by step: hold each material up to light and watch what passes. Clear glass lets all light through, so we see clearly — transparent. Butter paper lets some light through but scatters it, so shapes look blurred — translucent. A wooden door or a book blocks all light, so nothing passes and a dark shadow forms behind it — opaque. A shadow is simply the place where an opaque object has stopped the light.

Light Passing ThroughTransparent:all→Translucent:some→Opaque: none
3. Sound and How It Travels
🏷 Tags: sound, vibrations, waves, medium, air, water, solid, vacuum
ENGLISH

Sound is produced when something vibrates, like a drum skin or a guitar string.

Sound needs a medium to travel; it moves fastest in solids, slower in liquids and slowest in air, and cannot travel in empty space.

STEP BY STEP

Step by step: sound always starts with shaking — vibrations. Beat a drum and its skin vibrates; the vibrations push the air in waves, like ripples in water. The waves need a medium to travel through: air, water, or a solid. They travel fastest in a solid, because its particles are packed close together — that is why a distant train is heard earlier through a steel track than through air. In a vacuum there is no medium at all, so on the Moon, where there is no air, no sound can travel.

Speed of Sound (fast to slow)Solid10Liquid6Air3
4. The Human Ear and Intensity of Sound
🏷 Tags: human ear, eardrum, nerves, brain, intensity, loud, soft, hearing safety
ENGLISH

Sound waves enter the ear and make the eardrum vibrate; nerves carry the message to the brain.

Loud sounds have high intensity and soft sounds low intensity. Very loud sounds can damage hearing, so we should protect our ears.

STEP BY STEP

Step by step: follow a drumbeat into your head. The sound waves enter the ear and make the eardrum vibrate, nerves carry the message, and the brain turns it into the sound you hear. Intensity means how loud or soft a sound is — bigger vibrations make louder sounds. Very loud sounds can damage hearing, so keep distance from loudspeakers, do not shout into someone's ear, and cover your ears near loud machines.

Hearing a SoundSound waves→Eardrumvibrates→Nervemessage→Brain hears

Beating the drum vibrates its skin, the vibrations travel as waves through air, enter the ear, vibrate the eardrum, and nerves carry the message to the brain.

THINK + ANSWERS
Think Q 1: Q1. Why do we see lightning before we hear thunder?

Because light travels much faster than sound.

Think Q 2: Q2. If you put your ear on a railway track, why can you hear a distant train earlier?

Because sound travels faster through the solid steel track than through air.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Luminous and non-luminous (1): luminous objects make their own light (Sun, bulb, burning candle); non-luminous objects (Moon, table) are seen only by reflected light. Transparent, opaque and translucent (2): transparent materials let all light pass, translucent materials let some light pass but blur the view, opaque materials block all light and form a shadow. Sound and how it travels (3): sound is produced by vibrations, travels as waves through a medium, fastest in solids, and cannot travel in a vacuum — so there is no sound on the Moon. Human ear and intensity (4): waves vibrate the eardrum, nerves carry the message to the brain, and intensity is how loud or soft a sound is. Light travels much faster than sound, which is why lightning is seen before thunder is heard.

Revision tip: Sort six objects at home into luminous/non-luminous and transparent/translucent/opaque. Then explain, in order, how a drumbeat reaches your brain, and why a train is heard earlier through the track.
