ENGLISH

Electricity is the flow of electric current through a circuit, and magnets can pull some metals without even touching them. In this chapter we build circuits and learn the rules of magnets.

1. Electric Current and Circuits
🏷 Tags: electric current, circuit, cell, wires, bulb, switch, closed, open
ENGLISH

Electric current is the flow of charge through a wire, usually supplied by a cell or battery.

A simple circuit needs a cell, wires, a bulb and a switch. The bulb lights only when the circuit is complete, or closed.

STEP BY STEP

Step by step: build the circuit in order — a cell gives energy, connecting wires carry the current, a bulb uses it to glow, and a switch opens or closes the path. When the path is complete, the circuit is closed and the bulb lights. Break the path anywhere — open the switch, loosen a wire — and the current stops and the bulb goes out. If a bulb does not light, check the four parts in order: cell, wires, bulb, switch.

A Complete CircuitCell→Wire→Switchclosed→Bulb lights
2. Conductors and Insulators
🏷 Tags: conductors, insulators, copper, plastic, wood, rubber, safety
ENGLISH

Conductors let current pass easily, like copper wire, iron nails and aluminium.

Insulators do not let current pass, like plastic, rubber, wood and dry cloth. Electric wires are covered with plastic for safety.

STEP BY STEP

Step by step: test materials with a gap in a circuit. Put the object in the gap: if the bulb lights, current passed through, so the object is a conductor — copper wire, an iron nail, a steel spoon. If the bulb stays dark, the object is an insulator — a plastic spoon, a wooden stick, a rubber band. That is why electric wires are covered with plastic: the metal inside carries the current, and the plastic cover stops it from reaching your hands.

Conductor vs InsulatorCopper, iron passcurrentPlastic, rubberblock currentvs
3. Magnets and Their Properties
🏷 Tags: magnets, poles, north, south, attract, repel, iron, nickel, cobalt
ENGLISH

Every magnet has a north pole and a south pole.

Like poles repel each other and unlike poles attract. Magnets attract iron, nickel and cobalt, but not wood, plastic or copper.

STEP BY STEP

Step by step: a magnet pulls only certain metals — iron, nickel and cobalt — not all metals and not plastic or wood. Every magnet has two poles, north and south. Bring two north poles together and they push apart (repel); bring north and south together and they pull (attract). Break a magnet in half and each piece is still a complete magnet with its own north and south pole — poles never come alone.

Magnet RulesNorth + Northrepel→South + Southrepel→North + Southattract
4. Earth as a Magnet and the Compass
🏷 Tags: Earth magnet, compass, electromagnet, coil, current
ENGLISH

The Earth itself behaves like a huge magnet, which is why a freely hanging magnet always points north–south.

A magnetic compass has a small needle that points to the north, and travellers use it to find direction.

STEP BY STEP

Step by step: hang a bar magnet freely from a thread and watch — it always settles pointing north–south. That happens because the Earth itself acts like a huge magnet, and a compass needle is simply a small free magnet doing the same thing. An electromagnet is different: wind a coil around an iron nail and pass current through it, and the nail becomes a magnet — but only while the current flows. Switch the current off and the magnetism disappears.

A Compass Points North★

SHORT + ANSWERS
Short Q 1: Q1. Name the four parts of a simple circuit.

Cell, connecting wires, bulb and switch.

Short Q 2: Q2. Why are electric wires covered with plastic?

Plastic is an insulator, so it stops current from reaching our hands.

Short Q 3: Q3. Which metals does a magnet attract?

Iron, nickel and cobalt.

Short Q 4: Q4. What is an electromagnet?

A magnet made by passing current through a coil around an iron nail; it works only while current flows.

LONG + ANSWERS
Long Q 1: Q1. Describe an experiment to test conductors and insulators.

Make a simple circuit with a bulb and a gap. Put different objects in the gap one by one: if the bulb lights, the object is a conductor; if not, it is an insulator.

Long Q 2: Q2. Explain with an activity why Earth is called a huge magnet.

Hang a bar magnet freely with thread; it always settles pointing north–south because Earth's magnetism pulls it, just like a compass needle.

THINK + ANSWERS
Think Q 1: Q1. Why should we never touch a broken electric wire with wet hands?

Water conducts electricity, so current can pass through wet hands and give a dangerous shock.

Think Q 2: Q2. A magnet is broken into two pieces. Will each piece still have two poles? Why?

Yes, every piece becomes a complete magnet with its own north and south pole.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Electric current and circuits (1): a simple circuit has four parts — cell, connecting wires, bulb and switch; the bulb lights only when the circuit is closed. Conductors and insulators (2): conductors such as copper wire let current pass, insulators such as plastic, wood and rubber block it — which is why wires are plastic-covered. Magnets and their properties (3): magnets attract iron, nickel and cobalt; like poles repel and unlike poles attract; a broken magnet gives two complete magnets, each with both poles. Earth as a magnet and the compass (4): the Earth acts like a huge magnet, so a freely hanging magnet and a compass needle settle north–south; an electromagnet works only while current flows through its coil.

Revision tip: Draw a labelled circuit and mark what happens when the switch opens. List three conductors and three insulators from your home, and explain why you must never touch a broken wire with wet hands.
