The Earth is not one solid ball. It has layers inside, and its surface moves slowly. Sometimes that movement shakes the ground or pushes hot rock out of a volcano.
The Earth has three main layers: the thin outer crust, the thick mantle, and the very hot core.
We live on the crust. The core is so hot that its outer part is liquid metal.
Step by step: peel the Earth like an onion, from outside to inside. The crust is the thin, hard skin we live on — thin compared with the whole Earth, like the skin of an apple. Below it is the mantle, thick and very hot, where rock is soft enough to move slowly. At the centre is the core: its outer part is liquid metal and its inner part is solid and extremely hot, even though the pressure there is enormous.
A volcano is an opening in the crust where hot lava, ash and gases come out.
When lava cools it becomes new rock. Volcanic soil is often very fertile for farming.
Step by step: deep inside, rock is so hot that it melts into magma. When magma finds a crack and pushes up to the surface, it erupts as lava, together with ash and gases. Some eruptions flow slowly and build new land; others explode and throw ash far and wide. Volcanic soil is rich in minerals, which is why crops often grow well near old volcanoes — but a live volcano is dangerous, and people must stay away when it erupts.
An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground, caused by the movement of huge rock plates under the crust.
Big earthquakes can break buildings and roads, so people should move to open ground and stay away from walls.
Step by step: the crust is broken into huge rock plates that move very slowly. When two plates push and get stuck, energy builds up; when they suddenly slip, that energy shakes the ground — an earthquake. Protect yourself in order: drop to the ground, take cover under a strong desk or table, and hold on until the shaking stops. Then move calmly to open ground. Never use a lift during shaking, and never stand near a wall that could fall.
The crust is broken into large plates that float slowly on the hot mantle.
When plates push together, mountains rise; when they suddenly slip, an earthquake happens.
Step by step: the same slow plate movement explains two different things. Over millions of years, plates pushing against each other fold the crust upward into mountains. In a single moment, stuck plates slipping cause an earthquake. The heat deep inside the Earth drives all of this, and people cannot stop volcanoes or earthquakes — but they can prepare: strong, well-built houses fall less easily, and in a country like Pakistan, where earthquakes happen sometimes, building strong houses and practising drop, cover and hold on saves lives.

Crust, mantle and core.
Lava, ash and gases.
It is rich in minerals, so crops grow well in it.
Drop under a desk, cover your head, hold on, and then move calmly to open ground.
The thin crust is where we live. Below it is the thick, hot mantle. At the centre is the core: its outer part is liquid metal and its inner part is solid and extremely hot.
Plates push slowly against each other to raise mountains over millions of years, but when stuck plates suddenly slip, the stored energy shakes the ground as an earthquake.
Because strong, well-built houses are less likely to fall and hurt people during shaking.
No, because they are caused by forces deep inside the Earth, but we can prepare and stay safe.
Layers of the Earth (1): from outside to inside — the thin crust where we live, the thick hot mantle, and the core, whose outer part is liquid metal and whose inner part is solid and extremely hot. Volcanoes (2): hot melted rock (magma) erupts as lava with ash and gases; volcanic soil is rich in minerals, so crops grow well near old volcanoes. Earthquakes (3): moving rock plates get stuck and then slip suddenly, shaking the ground; safety means drop, cover and hold on, then move calmly to open ground. Why the Earth moves (4): heat inside the Earth drives slow plate movement, which raises mountains over millions of years and causes earthquakes in a moment; people cannot stop these forces, but strong houses and practice keep them safer.
Revision tip: Draw the three layers in order and label each. Then say the earthquake safety steps in order, and explain in two sentences how the same plates make both mountains and earthquakes.
