This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 5 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 5 Mathematics book was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 5 book list, and every question below was written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Answers marked here were checked arithmetically; derived workings are labelled as worked steps.

Big numbers are not scary once you see how they are grouped. We count in groups of three digits: ones, thousands, millions and billions. One billion is 1,000,000,000 — that is a 1 followed by nine zeros, or one thousand million. The commas are your friends: they cut the long number into small groups that are easy to read.
To read a number, start from the left group and say each group with its name. For 34,768,172 we say: thirty-four million, seven hundred sixty-eight thousand, one hundred seventy-two. The leftmost group tells you how many millions, the next group how many thousands, and the last group the ones.
Place value is the secret behind every digit. In 5,276,401, the 5 does not mean five — it means five million, because it sits in the millions group. The same digit 5 in a different place would mean something completely different, so always ask: which group is this digit standing in?
When numbers get big, we never try to add them in our heads all at once. We write them in columns, one place under the other — ones under ones, tens under tens — and we start from the ones place on the right. If a column adds up to more than 9, we carry the ten over to the next column, just like carrying a bag that is too heavy for one hand.
Subtraction works the same way, column by column from the right. If the top digit is too small, we borrow one ten from the next column. The golden rule is: never rush. One careful column at a time beats a fast, wrong answer every time.
Always finish with an estimation check. Round the numbers to something friendly first: 456,789 + 123,456 is about 457,000 + 123,000 = 580,000. The exact answer 580,245 is close to 580,000, so we know it is reasonable. If your estimate and your answer are far apart, you have probably slipped in a column — go back and look.
Big multiplication becomes easy when you break it into parts. To find 432 × 25, do not fight with 25 all at once. Split it into 20 and 5, which are friendly numbers: 432 × 5 = 2,160 and 432 × 20 = 8,640. Then add the parts: 2,160 + 8,640 = 10,800. That is the whole trick — every big multiplication is just a few small ones added together.
Division has its own shortcuts. To divide by 20, remember that 20 is 2 × 10, so you can first cancel a zero and then halve: 8,400 ÷ 20 = 840 ÷ 2 = 420. Always ask yourself: can I make the divisor smaller and friendlier first?
Division also answers a question: how many groups, and is anything left over? If 8,400 pencils are packed 20 in a box, 420 boxes are filled exactly, with nothing left. If something were left over, that leftover would be the remainder — and in real life you must decide what to do with it.
BODMAS is the traffic rule of mathematics. Without it, everyone would solve the same question differently and get different answers — and that would be chaos. The letters tell you the order: Brackets first, then Orders (powers like squares), then Division and Multiplication, and finally Addition and Subtraction.
Two things surprise most students. First, division and multiplication are equal partners: when they appear together, work from left to right, not division always first. The same goes for addition and subtraction. Second, brackets can change everything: (8 + 2) × 5 = 10 × 5 = 50, but without brackets 8 + 2 × 5 = 8 + 10 = 18. Same digits, different answer — only because of the brackets.
Look at 6 + 3 × 4. A student who adds first gets 9 × 4 = 36, which is wrong. BODMAS says multiplication comes before addition, so 3 × 4 = 12 first, then 6 + 12 = 18. And 20 − 2 × 6 = 20 − 12 = 8, not 108 — the 108 comes from wrongly doing the subtraction first and then multiplying 18 × 6. One rule, followed every time, keeps every answer fair and the same for everyone.
1 What is one billion in figures?
Answer: (b) 1,000,000,000. One billion is one thousand million: a 1 followed by nine zeros, so 1,000,000,000.
2 6 + 3 × 4 = ?
Answer: (b) 18. BODMAS: multiply before adding. 3 × 4 = 12 first, then 6 + 12 = 18. Adding first would wrongly give 36.
3 432 × 25 = ?
Answer: (a) 10,800. Break it up: 432 × 20 = 8,640 and 432 × 5 = 2,160. Add the parts: 8,640 + 2,160 = 10,800.
4 In BODMAS, what comes first?
Answer: (c) Brackets. B in BODMAS stands for Brackets, and brackets always come first.
Answer: Five million, two hundred seventy-six thousand, four hundred one. Read it in groups: 5 million, then 276 thousand, then 401.
Answer: 600,000. Column by column: 345,678 + 254,322 = 600,000. Check by estimation: about 346,000 + 254,000 = 600,000.
Answer: 420. Cancel a zero first: 8,400 ÷ 20 = 840 ÷ 2 = 420.
Answer: 10 × 5 = 50. Brackets first: 8 + 2 = 10, then 10 × 5 = 50.
Answer: 1,245 + 1,368 = 2,613 students. Estimate: 1,200 + 1,400 = 2,600, close to 2,613, so the answer is reasonable. Add the columns: 1,245 + 1,368 = 2,613. Estimation: 1,200 + 1,400 = 2,600, close to 2,613, so the answer is reasonable.
Answer: By BODMAS, multiplication comes before subtraction: 2 × 6 = 12, then 20 − 12 = 8. Doing subtraction first would wrongly give 18 × 6 = 108. Multiply before subtracting: 2 × 6 = 12, then 20 − 12 = 8. Subtracting first would wrongly give (20 − 2) × 6 = 108.
Answer: About 125 × 30 = 3,750. An estimate is enough for planning stock. 125 × 30 = 3,750, but the question asks 'about how many', so this estimate is enough for planning stock — an exact count is not needed.
Answer: Without one order, the same question gives different answers, so maths would be confusing and unfair. One order means one answer for everyone. Without BODMAS the same digits could give 18, 36 or 108, and maths would be unfair.
In this chapter you learned to read and write numbers up to one billion, to add and subtract big numbers column by column with an estimation check, to break big multiplications into parts and divide smartly, and to follow BODMAS so every question has exactly one correct answer.
Revision guidance: Revision tip: practise reading one big number aloud every day, and for every BODMAS question, first underline the operation you will do first before you touch any digit.
