Chapter at a glance — HCF and LCM: Factors and Multiples, Finding HCF, Finding LCM, Real-Life Problems.
1. Factors and Multiples
🏷 Tags: factors, multiples, prime, composite
ENGLISH

A factor is a number that divides another number exactly, with nothing left over. The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12, because each of them divides 12 cleanly. A neat way to find them all is to look for pairs: 1 × 12, 2 × 6 and 3 × 4. When the pairs start repeating, you know you have found them all.

A multiple is the opposite idea: it is what you get when you multiply a number by 1, 2, 3 and so on. The multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and they go on forever — multiples never end, while factors always stop at the number itself.

Two special words matter here. A prime number has exactly two factors: 1 and itself, like 11, whose only factors are 1 and 11. A composite number has more than two factors, like 15 (1, 3, 5, 15). And 1 is neither prime nor composite, because it has only one factor — itself. That is a favourite exam trap, so remember it.

Example: Worked example: Factors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20 (pairs: 1×20, 2×10, 4×5). First five multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30.

2. Finding HCFHCF
🏷 Tags: hcf, highest common factor, prime factorisation
ENGLISH

HCF means Highest Common Factor: the biggest number that divides two or more numbers exactly. To find the HCF of 12 and 18, list the factors of each: 12 has 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 and 18 has 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18. The common factors are 1, 2, 3 and 6, and the highest of them is 6. So HCF = 6.

For bigger numbers, prime factorisation is faster and safer. Break each number into primes: 12 = 2 × 2 × 3 and 18 = 2 × 3 × 3. The HCF takes only the primes that appear in both, at their lowest power: one 2 and one 3, so 2 × 3 = 6. The same trick gives HCF of 8 and 12 as 4, because 8 = 2 × 2 × 2 and 12 = 2 × 2 × 3 share 2 × 2.

A common mistake is to pick 36 for the HCF of 12 and 18 — but 36 does not divide 12 at all. The HCF can never be bigger than the smallest number in the question. If your answer is bigger than the smallest number, it is certainly wrong.

Example: Worked example: HCF of 8 and 12: factors of 8 are 1, 2, 4, 8; factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12. Common: 1, 2, 4. Highest = 4.

3. Finding LCMLCM
🏷 Tags: lcm, lowest common multiple, multiples
ENGLISH

LCM means Lowest Common Multiple: the smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers. To find the LCM of 4 and 6, list multiples: 4 gives 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 and 6 gives 6, 12, 18, 24. The first number that appears in both lists is 12, so LCM = 12. Notice that 24 is also common, but it is not the lowest.

Prime factorisation works here too. Write 12 = 2² × 3, 18 = 2 × 3² and 24 = 2³ × 3. For the LCM, take every prime at its highest power: 2³ × 3² = 8 × 9 = 72. That is why the LCM of 12, 18 and 24 is 72, while their HCF is only 6 — the LCM collects everything, the HCF collects only what is shared.

When the numbers are prime to each other, like 5 and 7, there is a shortcut: just multiply them. LCM of 5 and 7 is 35, because no smaller number is a multiple of both. And remember, unlike HCF, the LCM is never smaller than the biggest number in the question.

Example: Worked example: LCM of 5 and 7 = 5 × 7 = 35. LCM of 12, 18, 24: 2³ × 3² = 72.

LCM of 4 and 64 = 2 × 2→6 = 2 × 3→Take 2 × 2 ×3→LCM = 12
4. Real-Life Problems
🏷 Tags: hcf lcm word problems, ribbons, bells
ENGLISH

The golden question before you start is: am I cutting things into equal pieces, or waiting for things to meet again? If you are cutting, you need HCF. Two ribbons of 24 cm and 36 cm must be cut into the longest equal pieces possible, with nothing wasted. The HCF of 24 and 36 is 12, so each piece is 12 cm long. Any longer, and one ribbon would not divide evenly.

If you are waiting for a repeat, you need LCM. A bell rings every 6 minutes and another every 8 minutes. After ringing together, they meet again at the LCM of 6 and 8, which is 24 minutes. Listing helps you see it: 6, 12, 18, 24 and 8, 16, 24 — the first meeting point is 24.

Mixing them up is the classic error. If you used LCM for the ribbons you would get 72 cm pieces — longer than the ribbons themselves, which is nonsense. And if you used HCF for the bells you would get 2 minutes, before either bell has rung again. So always ask first: cut into pieces (HCF) or meet again (LCM)?

Example: Worked example: Ribbons 24 cm and 36 cm → HCF 12 → 12 cm pieces. Bells every 6 and 8 minutes → LCM 24 → together again after 24 minutes.

Long Answer Questions
1 Find HCF and LCM of 12, 18 and 24 by prime factorisation.

Answer: 12 = 2²×3, 18 = 2×3², 24 = 2³×3. HCF = 2×3 = 6. LCM = 2³×3² = 72. 12 = 2² × 3, 18 = 2 × 3², 24 = 2³ × 3. HCF takes lowest powers: 2 × 3 = 6. LCM takes highest powers: 2³ × 3² = 72.

2 Two ribbons are 24 cm and 36 cm long. What is the longest equal piece they can both be cut into?

Answer: HCF of 24 and 36 is 12, so 12 cm pieces. Cutting into equal pieces means HCF. HCF of 24 and 36: 24 = 2³ × 3, 36 = 2² × 3², common 2² × 3 = 12, so 12 cm pieces.

Think and Explain
1 A bell rings every 6 minutes and another every 8 minutes. If they ring together now, after how many minutes will they ring together again?

Answer: LCM of 6 and 8 is 24 minutes. Meeting again means LCM. Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24. Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24. First meeting: 24 minutes.

2 Why is 1 neither prime nor composite?

Answer: Because it has only one factor (itself), while prime needs exactly two and composite needs more than two. Prime needs exactly two factors and composite needs more than two. 1 has only one factor (itself), so it is neither.
