Chapter at a glance — Geometry: Points, Lines and Angles, Triangles, Quadrilaterals and Circles, Symmetry and Drawing.
1. Points, Lines and Angles

ENGLISH

Geometry starts with the simplest things. A point is just a position — it has no length or width, like the dot at the end of a sentence. A line goes on forever in both directions, a ray starts at a point and goes on in one direction like a sunbeam, and a line segment is a piece of a line with two ends, like the edge of your ruler.

An angle is formed when two rays or segments meet at a point. We measure angles in degrees (°), and four names cover everything you will meet in Class 5. An acute angle is less than 90°, a right angle is exactly 90° (like the corner of your book), an obtuse angle is more than 90° but less than 180°, and a straight angle is exactly 180° — a straight line.

So naming is quick once you compare with 90°: 45° is acute, 90° is right, 135° is obtuse, and 180° is straight. A 120° angle is obtuse, because it sits between 90° and 180°. A protractor measures angles, but comparing with the corner of a book already tells you the family an angle belongs to.

Example: Worked example: 45° acute, 90° right, 135° obtuse, 180° straight. A 120° angle is obtuse.

2. Triangles

ENGLISH

Triangles are named by their sides. An equilateral triangle has all three sides equal — and all three angles equal too, 60° each. An isosceles triangle has two sides equal, like a roof with two matching slopes. A scalene triangle has no sides equal at all. So a triangle with two equal sides is isosceles, which is one of the most asked questions in this chapter.

Every triangle, whatever its shape, has one magic property: its three angles always add up to 180°. If two angles are 60° and 70°, the third must be 180 − 60 − 70 = 50°. You can prove it with paper: cut the three corners off a paper triangle and place them side by side — they fit exactly onto a straight line, which is 180°.

That magic sum also proves what cannot exist. A triangle cannot have two right angles, because two right angles already make 180°, leaving 0° for the third angle — and an angle of 0° is no angle at all. Whenever a triangle question looks impossible, check the 180° rule first.

Example: Worked example: Angles 60° and 70° → third = 180 − 130 = 50°. Two right angles = 180° already, so a third angle is impossible.

3. Quadrilaterals and Circles

ENGLISH

A quadrilateral is any shape with four sides, but the two you must know perfectly are the square and the rectangle. A square has all four sides equal and all four angles right angles. A rectangle also has four right angles, but only its opposite sides are equal — the length is longer than the width. That one difference — all sides equal versus only opposite sides equal — is the standard exam answer.

A circle is a different kind of shape altogether. Every point on a circle is exactly the same distance from its centre, and that distance is called the radius. The diameter is the distance straight across through the centre, so it is always double the radius: diameter = 2 × radius. If the radius is 5 cm, the diameter is 10 cm; if you draw a circle of radius 4 cm, its diameter is 8 cm.

This equal-distance property is why wheels must be perfect circles. A wheel that was not a perfect circle would bump up and down as it rolled, because some points would be nearer the centre than others. A true circle rolls smoothly, which is why every wheel, from a bicycle to a bus, is made round.

Example: Worked example: Radius 5 cm → diameter 2 × 5 = 10 cm. Radius 4 cm → diameter 8 cm.

4. Symmetry and Drawing
🏷 Tags: symmetry, drawing circles, compass
ENGLISH

A line of symmetry is a line you could fold a shape along so that both halves match exactly. A square has 4 lines of symmetry: two across the middles of opposite sides, and two along the diagonals. A rectangle has only 2: one lengthwise down the middle and one across the middle. Its diagonals are not lines of symmetry — folding along a diagonal of a rectangle does not make the halves match, because the length and width differ.

Drawing a circle properly needs a compass, not a freehand guess. Fix the compass point on the centre, open it to the radius you want, and turn it in one smooth circle without changing the opening. If the opening slips, the circle will not close properly — that is the commonest drawing mistake.

To draw a rectangle 8 cm long and 5 cm wide, draw the 8 cm base first, then right angles at both ends, then 5 cm sides, then join the top. Mark its two lines of symmetry with dotted lines down the middle lengthwise and across the middle. Neat construction and labelled symmetry lines are what earn full marks in drawing questions.

Example: Worked example: Square: 4 lines of symmetry. Rectangle 8 cm × 5 cm: 2 lines — one lengthwise, one across the middle.

Multiple Choice Questions

1 An angle of 120° is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Obtuse. Compare with 90°: 120° is more than 90° but less than 180°, so it is obtuse.

2 A triangle with two equal sides is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) Isosceles. Two equal sides is the definition of isosceles. Equilateral has three equal, scalene has none.

3 If a circle's radius is 5 cm, its diameter is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) 10 cm. Diameter is double the radius: 2 × 5 = 10 cm.

4 How many lines of symmetry does a square have?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) 4. A square folds 4 ways: two across the middles and two along the diagonals.

Short Answer Questions
1 Name the angle: 45°, 90°, 135°, 180°.

Answer: Acute, right, obtuse, straight. Compare each with 90°: 45° < 90° (acute), 90° (right), 135° > 90° (obtuse), 180° (straight).

2 Two angles of a triangle are 60° and 70°. Find the third.

Answer: 50° (because 60 + 70 + 50 = 180). Angles of a triangle add to 180°: 180 − 60 − 70 = 50°.

3 Draw a circle of radius 4 cm. What is its diameter?

Answer: 8 cm. Diameter = 2 × radius = 2 × 4 = 8 cm.

4 Give one difference between a square and a rectangle.

Answer: A square has all sides equal; a rectangle has only opposite sides equal. A square has all sides equal; a rectangle has only opposite sides equal. That one difference is the answer.

Long Answer Questions
1 Prove that the angles of a triangle add to 180° using a paper triangle.

Answer: Cut the three corners and place them together on a straight line; they form 180°. Cut the three corners and place them together: they fill a straight line exactly, and a straight line is 180°.

2 A rectangle is 8 cm long and 5 cm wide. Draw it and mark its lines of symmetry.

Answer: A rectangle has 2 lines of symmetry: one lengthwise and one across the middle. A rectangle folds only 2 ways: lengthwise down the middle and across the middle. Its diagonals do not match the halves.

Think and Explain
1 Why do wheels have to be perfect circles?

Answer: Because every point on a circle is the same distance from the centre, so the wheel rolls smoothly without bumps. Every point on a circle is the same distance from the centre, so a circular wheel rolls without bumps. Any other shape would rise and fall.

2 Can a triangle have two right angles? Why or why not?

Answer: No, because two right angles already make 180°, leaving 0° for the third angle, which is impossible. Two right angles already make 180°, leaving 0° for the third angle — and 0° is no angle at all. So it is impossible.

SUMMARY

In this chapter you learned points, lines and the four angle families, triangles by their sides and the 180° angle sum, squares, rectangles and circles with radius and diameter, and symmetry with careful compass and ruler drawing.

Revision guidance: Revision tip: carry a small protractor habit — for every angle question, first decide: less than, equal to, or more than 90°? That one comparison names the angle before you measure it.
