This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 5 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 5 Mathematics book was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 5 book list, and every question below was written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Answers marked here were checked arithmetically; derived workings are labelled as worked steps.
Information handling starts with a good question. 'What is your favourite game?' is a good question because every student has one answer, and the answers can be counted. A vague question like 'Do you like things?' is useless, because nobody knows what to count. Good data starts with a clear question asked to a clear group.
Tally marks are the fastest way to count answers as they come in. Draw one vertical line for each answer, and every fifth line goes diagonally across the previous four, closing a group of five. Groups of five are easy to count at a glance — you count groups, not single lines — which is why tally marks are grouped in 5s and never in 2s or 10s.
Then turn the tallies into a table. When 20 students were asked their favourite game, the table reads: cricket 8, football 7, hockey 5. Check the total: 8 + 7 + 5 = 20, which matches the number of students asked. If your table total does not match the number of people asked, someone's answer was missed or counted twice.
A pictograph shows numbers with pictures instead of bars. Each picture stands for a fixed number of items, and the key tells you that number. Without the key, a pictograph is just a pretty row of pictures that means nothing — which is why a pictograph must always have a key. That is not decoration, it is the whole meaning of the graph.
Reading one is multiplication. If one star stands for 4 children, then 3 stars mean 3 × 4 = 12 children. If one book picture stands for 10 books, then 6 pictures show 6 × 10 = 60 books. Sometimes a half picture appears, and it means half the key value: half a star would mean 2 children when one star means 4.
Pictographs are lovely for young readers because pictures are friendly, but they have a weakness: they are clumsy for big or exact numbers. You would not draw 137 stars for 137 children. When numbers get big or need to be exact, a table or a bar graph does the job better — which brings us to the next section.
A bar graph compares numbers using the lengths of bars. Longer bar, bigger number — that is the whole idea, and it is why bar graphs are so quick to read. For marks — Ali 10, Sara 14, Ahmed 8, Fatima 12 — Sara's bar is the longest, so Sara scored highest with 14. You can see the winner without reading a single number closely.
A bar graph is only honest if its scale is fair. The scale must start at zero, and every step must be equal — if one step means 2 marks, every step must mean 2 marks. A graph that starts at 8 instead of 0 makes small differences look enormous, and a graph with uneven steps lies about every comparison it shows.
So checking a bar graph is a two-second job: does the scale start at zero, and are the steps equal? If either answer is no, do not trust the picture — read the numbers written on the bars instead. Graphs are meant to make truth clearer, never to hide it behind a clever scale.
Probability is the language of chance, and in Class 5 it has just three words. Certain means it will definitely happen. Possible means it might happen, but it might not. Impossible means it can never happen. Sorting events into these three boxes is the whole skill — no complicated fractions are needed yet.
Test each event against what you know. Getting a 7 on a normal dice is impossible, because a dice only has faces 1 to 6 — a 7 simply does not exist on it. Rain in Lahore next year is possible: it may rain, but nobody can be sure when. And a spinner with 4 equal parts — red, blue, green, yellow — landing on red is possible, not certain: the chance is 1 out of 4, so red might come up, but blue, green or yellow might come up instead.
When there is a choice, 'more likely' follows the numbers. A bag with 3 red balls and 1 blue ball is more likely to give red, because there are more red balls to pick. More of something means more chances for it — that simple idea is the seed of all probability you will learn later.
1 In a pictograph, one star = 4 children. 3 stars mean:
Answer: (c) 12 children. Multiply by the key: 3 stars × 4 children = 12 children.
2 A bar graph compares numbers using:
Answer: (b) Bar lengths. A bar graph compares by bar lengths: the longer the bar, the bigger the number.
3 Getting a 7 on a normal dice is:
Answer: (c) Impossible. A normal dice has faces 1 to 6 only. There is no 7 on it, so getting a 7 is impossible.
4 Tally marks are grouped in:
Answer: (b) 5s. Tally marks are closed in groups of five: four straight lines and the fifth diagonally across.
Answer: Cricket 8, football 7, hockey 5 (tally groups of 5 + remainder). Tally in groups of 5: cricket 8, football 7, hockey 5. Total check: 8 + 7 + 5 = 20 students.
Answer: 60 books. Multiply by the key: 6 pictures × 10 books = 60 books.
Answer: Possible (it may rain, but we cannot be sure when). Rain next year may happen, but nobody can be sure when — so it is possible, neither certain nor impossible.
Answer: Red, because there are more red balls. More balls of a colour means more chances to pick it: 3 red against 1 blue, so red is more likely.
Answer: Sara scored highest (14). Bars: Ali 10, Sara 14, Ahmed 8, Fatima 12. Compare bar lengths: Ali 10, Sara 14, Ahmed 8, Fatima 12. Sara's bar is longest, so Sara scored highest with 14.
Answer: 1 out of 4 — possible, not certain. Four equal parts means red has 1 chance out of 4. It might happen, but it might not — possible, not certain.
Answer: Because without it we cannot know how many items one picture stands for. Without a key, nobody knows how many items one picture stands for, so the graph says nothing. The key is the meaning.
Answer: Check that the scale starts at zero and bars use equal steps. Check two things: the scale must start at zero, and every step must be equal. If either fails, the graph misleads.
In this chapter you learned to collect data with a clear question, count it with tally marks in groups of five, read pictographs by multiplying with the key, compare numbers with bar graphs on a fair scale from zero, and sort chances into certain, possible and impossible.
Revision guidance: Revision tip: for every graph question, first find the key or the scale before you read any bar or picture. For every chance question, first ask: can this ever happen, and must it always happen?
