A magnet attracts iron, nickel and cobalt. Every magnet has two poles: North (N) and South (S). Like poles repel; unlike poles attract.
Magnets come as bar, horseshoe, disc and needle shapes. A freely suspended magnet always points north–south — the basis of the compass.
The space around a magnet where its force acts is its magnetic field. Iron filings around a bar magnet show field lines: leaving the north pole, entering the south.
Field lines never cross. Where lines are close, the field is strong (near poles); where far apart, it is weak.
A steel needle becomes a magnet by stroking it in one direction with a magnet, or by placing it in a coil carrying current (electromagnet).
A magnet loses magnetism by heating strongly, hammering, or dropping repeatedly — its tiny internal magnets fall out of alignment.
An electromagnet is a coil of wire around an iron core; it becomes magnetic only while current flows. More turns or more current make it stronger.
Uses: lifting scrap iron in junkyards, electric bells, motors, and door locks. Advantage: magnetism can be switched on and off.
Earth behaves like a giant magnet, with magnetic poles near the geographic poles. That is why a compass needle points north.
Compasses help travellers, sailors and pilots find direction. Note: the compass north-seeking pole points to Earth’s magnetic south pole (near geographic north).

MCQ 1: A magnet does NOT attract:
(c) Copper — Copper is not magnetic.
MCQ 2: Like poles:
(b) Repel — Like poles repel.
MCQ 3: An electromagnet works only when:
(b) Current flows — Current through the coil creates magnetism.
MCQ 4: A compass needle points:
(c) North–south — North–south, due to Earth’s magnetism.
MCQ 5: Magnetic field lines:
(b) Never cross — They never cross; they leave N and enter S.
Short Q1: Name three magnetic materials.
Iron, nickel, cobalt (and steel, which contains iron).
Short Q2: How can you make a magnet stronger?
For an electromagnet: more turns, more current, soft iron core. For a bar magnet: use a stronger magnet to stroke.
Short Q3: How does a magnet lose magnetism?
Strong heating, hammering, or repeated dropping.
Short Q4: Why is an electromagnet better than a permanent magnet for lifting scrap?
It can be switched off to drop the load exactly where wanted.
Long Q1: Describe an experiment to show magnetic field lines around a bar magnet.
Place a bar magnet under a sheet of paper. Sprinkle iron filings lightly and tap the paper. Filings line up along field lines from N to S, crowded near poles (strong field) and sparse far away (weak field). The pattern proves a field exists in space around the magnet.
Long Q2: Explain how an electric bell uses an electromagnet.
Pressing the switch sends current through a coil, making an electromagnet that pulls an iron arm (hammer) to strike the gong. The movement breaks the circuit, the magnet switches off, a spring pulls the hammer back, the circuit remakes — and the cycle repeats rapidly, ringing the bell.
Magnets and poles (1): a magnet attracts iron, nickel and cobalt; every magnet has North (N) and South (S) poles; like poles repel, unlike attract; bar, horseshoe, disc and needle shapes exist, and a freely suspended magnet points north–south — the basis of the compass. Field (2): the space around a magnet where its force acts is its magnetic field; iron filings show field lines leaving the north pole and entering the south, never crossing, close together (strong) near poles and far apart (weak) elsewhere. Making and destroying (3): stroke a steel needle in one direction with a magnet, or place it in a current-carrying coil; heating strongly, hammering or repeated dropping destroys magnetism by misaligning tiny internal magnets. Electromagnets (4) are coils around an iron core, magnetic only while current flows; more turns or more current make them stronger; uses include lifting scrap iron, electric bells, motors and door locks, with the advantage of switching on and off. Earth (5) behaves like a giant magnet with magnetic poles near the geographic poles, so a compass needle points north; note that the compass north-seeking pole points to Earth’s magnetic south pole near geographic north.
Revision tip: Describe the iron-filings experiment for field lines, and explain how an electric bell rings using an electromagnet — in the right order of steps.
