Electric charge comes in two kinds: positive (+) and negative (−). Like charges repel; unlike charges attract. Rubbing a balloon on hair gives it negative charge — it then attracts small paper pieces.
Electric current is the flow of charge, usually electrons through a metal wire. It is measured in amperes (A). A cell (battery) pushes the current around a circuit.
A circuit is a complete loop: cell → wire → bulb → wire → cell. A switch opens (breaks) or closes (completes) the circuit. In an open circuit no current flows and the bulb is off.
Conductors (copper, iron, water with salts) let current pass. Insulators (plastic, rubber, wood, glass) block it — that is why wires are covered in plastic.
Series: components in one loop, one after another. Current is the same everywhere, but voltage is shared — two bulbs in series glow dimmer. If one bulb fuses, all go out.
Parallel: components in separate branches. Each gets full voltage and glows brightly; one fused bulb does not stop the others. Homes use parallel circuits.
Voltage (V, in volts) is the push that drives current. Resistance (in ohms, Ω) opposes current: long, thin wires resist more. More voltage or less resistance means more current.
Safety: never touch switches or sockets with wet hands; never poke objects into sockets; never fly kites near power lines; a fuse or circuit breaker protects against too much current.
Homes receive electricity from power stations through wires. A meter measures units used; one unit = 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh). Bills grow with units used.
Appliances change electrical energy: bulb → light, fan → motion, heater → heat, charger → chemical (battery). Saving electricity saves money and fuel.

MCQ 1: Unit of electric current is:
(c) Ampere — Ampere (A). جواب: ایمپیئر (A)۔
MCQ 2: Which is an insulator?
(c) Plastic — Plastic blocks current.
MCQ 3: In a series circuit, if one bulb fuses:
(b) All go out — One loop is broken for all.
MCQ 4: Homes use which circuits?
(b) Parallel — Parallel: full voltage, independent branches.
MCQ 5: One electricity unit equals:
(b) 1 kWh — 1 kilowatt-hour.
Short Q1: Why does a balloon rubbed on hair attract paper?
Rubbing gives it negative charge; unlike charges attract the (neutral, polarised) paper pieces.
Short Q2: Draw a simple circuit and label its parts.
Cell, connecting wires, switch, bulb — in a complete loop.
Short Q3: Why are wires covered in plastic?
Plastic is an insulator: it stops current leaking out and protects from shocks.
Short Q4: Give two electrical safety rules.
Dry hands only; never poke objects into sockets.
Long Q1: Compare series and parallel circuits with a home example.
Series: one loop, shared voltage, dimmer bulbs, one failure stops all — like old fairy lights. Parallel: separate branches, full voltage, bright bulbs, one failure does not affect others — like home lights, where switching off one room does not darken the house.
Long Q2: A 100 W bulb runs for 10 hours. How many units (kWh) does it use? How can the family reduce this?
Energy = 100 W × 10 h = 1000 Wh = 1 kWh = 1 unit. Reduce by using an LED bulb (about 10–15 W for similar light), switching off when leaving, and using daylight.
Charge and current (1): charge is positive (+) or negative (−); like charges repel, unlike attract; rubbing a balloon on hair gives it negative charge so it attracts paper pieces; current is the flow of charge (electrons through metal wire), measured in amperes (A), pushed by a cell. Circuits (2) are complete loops: cell → wire → bulb → wire → cell; a switch opens or closes the circuit; conductors (copper, iron, salt water) let current pass, insulators (plastic, rubber, wood, glass) block it, which is why wires are plastic-covered. Series and parallel (3): in series, components share one loop, current is the same everywhere but voltage is shared so bulbs glow dimmer, and one fused bulb stops all; in parallel, separate branches each get full voltage and glow brightly, and one fused bulb does not stop the others — homes use parallel. Voltage, resistance, safety (4): voltage (volts) is the push, resistance (ohms, Ω) opposes current, and more voltage or less resistance means more current; never touch switches with wet hands, poke objects into sockets, or fly kites near power lines; a fuse or breaker guards against too much current. Home (5): electricity comes from power stations through wires, a meter counts units (1 unit = 1 kWh), and appliances convert it: bulb → light, fan → motion, heater → heat, charger → chemical.
Revision tip: Draw a simple circuit and label cell, wires, switch and bulb. Then explain why home lights stay on when one room is switched off, and work out the units for a 100 W bulb run for 10 hours.
