Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. All matter is made of tiny particles too small to see — atoms and molecules.
Particles are always moving, and the spaces between them differ: solids have tiny spaces, liquids larger, gases largest. Heating makes particles move faster.
Solids: particles tightly packed, vibrating in place — fixed shape and volume. Liquids: particles looser, sliding past each other — fixed volume, shape of container.
Gases: particles far apart, moving freely — no fixed shape or volume; they fill the container and can be compressed.
ٹھوس: ذرات مضبوطی سے جڑے، اپنی جگہ ہلتے ہیں — شکل و حجم مقرر۔ مائع: ذرات ڈھیلے، ایک دوسرے پر پھسلتے ہیں — حجم مقرر، شکل برتن کی۔
گیس: ذرات دور دور، آزاد حرکت — نہ شکل مقرر نہ حجم؛ برتن بھر لیتی ہے اور دبائی جا سکتی ہے۔
Melting: solid → liquid (ice → water at 0°C). Boiling/evaporation: liquid → gas (water → steam at 100°C). Freezing: liquid → solid. Condensation: gas → liquid (dew, droplets on a cold bottle).
Heating gives particles energy to break free; cooling takes energy away so particles settle. These are physical changes — the substance stays the same.
Diffusion is the spreading of particles from where there are many to where there are few, until evenly mixed. Perfume spreads across a room; ink spreads in water.
Diffusion is fastest in gases, slower in liquids, slowest in solids — because particles move freest in gases. Heating speeds it up.
Most materials expand (get bigger) when heated and contract (get smaller) when cooled, because particles move further apart or closer together.
Uses and problems: railway tracks have small gaps for expansion; bridges have expansion joints; a tight metal lid loosens under hot water.

MCQ 1: Matter is defined as anything that:
(b) Has mass and takes up space — Mass + space = matter. جواب: کمیت + جگہ = مادہ۔
MCQ 2: In which state are particles furthest apart?
(c) Gas — Gases have the largest spaces. جواب: گیسوں میں سب سے بڑے خلا ہوتے ہیں۔
MCQ 3: Water boils at:
(c) 100°C — 100°C at normal pressure. جواب: عام دباؤ پر 100°C۔
MCQ 4: Diffusion is fastest in:
(c) Gases — Gas particles move freest. جواب: گیس کے ذرات آزاد ترین حرکت کرتے ہیں۔
MCQ 5: Railway tracks have gaps to allow for:
(b) Expansion on heating — Expansion when heated by the Sun. جواب: سورج کی گرمی سے پھیلاؤ کے لیے۔
Short Q1: State the particle theory in one sentence.
All matter is made of tiny particles that are always moving with spaces between them. جواب: تمام مادہ ننھے ذرات سے بنا ہے جو ہمیشہ حرکت میں ہوتے ہیں اور ان کے درمیان خلا ہیں۔
Short Q2: Why does a gas fill its container but a liquid does not?
Gas particles move freely and far apart; liquid particles stay together with fixed volume. جواب: گیس کے ذرات آزاد و دور دور حرکت کرتے ہیں؛ مائع کے ذرات مقرر حجم کے ساتھ اکٹھے رہتے ہیں۔
Short Q3: What is condensation? Give an example.
Gas changing to liquid, e.g. droplets on a cold bottle. جواب: گیس کا مائع میں بدلنا، مثلاً ٹھنڈی بوتل پر قطرے۔
Short Q4: Why does a balloon expand in the Sun?
Heat makes air particles move faster and further apart, pushing the balloon bigger. جواب: گرمی ہوا کے ذرات کو تیز و دور حرکت دیتی ہے، غبارہ بڑا ہو جاتا ہے۔
Long Q1: Use particle theory to explain melting and evaporation.
In a solid, particles vibrate in fixed places. Heating gives them energy to break free and slide — the solid melts. At the surface of a liquid, energetic particles escape into the air — evaporation. Both are physical changes: particles themselves do not change. جواب: ٹھوس میں ذرات مقررہ جگہوں پر ہلتے ہیں۔ گرم کرنے سے انہیں آزاد ہو کر پھسلنے کی توانائی ملتی ہے — ٹھوس پگھل جاتا ہے۔ مائع کی سطح پر توانائی والے ذرات ہوا میں نکل جاتے ہیں — بخارات۔ دونوں طبعی تبدیلیاں ہیں: ذرات خود نہیں بدلتے۔
Long Q2: A student smells perfume from across the room. Explain using diffusion, and say how heating the room affects it.
Perfume particles diffuse from high concentration (the bottle) to low (across the room) until mixed. Heating speeds particle movement, so diffusion — and the smell — spreads faster in a warm room. جواب: عطر کے ذرات زیادہ ارتکاز (بوتل) سے کم (کمرے کے پار) تک پھیلتے ہیں یہاں تک کہ مل جائیں۔ گرم کرنے سے ذرات کی حرکت تیز ہوتی ہے، اس لیے گرم کمرے میں انتشار — اور خوشبو — تیزی سے پھیلتی ہے۔
Particles (1): matter is anything with mass that takes up space, and all matter is made of tiny particles that are always moving, with spaces between them; heating makes them move faster. States (2): solids have tightly packed particles vibrating in place (fixed shape and volume); liquids have looser particles sliding past each other (fixed volume, shape of the container); gases have particles far apart moving freely (no fixed shape or volume, and they can be compressed). Changes of state (3): melting (solid → liquid, ice → water at 0°C), boiling/evaporation (liquid → gas, water → steam at 100°C), freezing (liquid → solid) and condensation (gas → liquid, e.g. droplets on a cold bottle) are physical changes — the substance stays the same. Diffusion (4) is spreading from many particles to few until evenly mixed (perfume across a room, ink in water), fastest in gases, slowest in solids, and faster when heated. Expansion (5): most materials expand when heated and contract when cooled, which is why railway tracks have gaps and bridges have expansion joints.
Revision tip: Explain, using particles only: why a gas fills its container, why perfume reaches across a room, and why a balloon grows in the Sun. Then list the four changes of state with one example each.
