Food is too large to enter the blood. Digestion breaks it into small, soluble pieces that blood can carry to every cell for energy, growth and repair.
Digestion is both mechanical (teeth chewing, stomach churning) and chemical (enzymes breaking food molecules).
Mouth (teeth chew, saliva starts starch digestion) → oesophagus (tube pushing food down) → stomach (acid + churning) → small intestine (digestion completes, absorption) → large intestine (water absorbed) → rectum and anus (waste out).
Salivary glands, liver (bile) and pancreas (enzymes) add juices along the way. Bile breaks fats into droplets; pancreatic enzymes digest carbs, proteins and fats.
The small intestine’s inner wall has millions of tiny finger-like villi. They give a huge surface area, so digested food passes quickly into the blood.
Blood carries glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals to cells. Undigested food and fibre pass to the large intestine.
Humans have two sets: milk teeth (20) and permanent teeth (32). Types: incisors (cutting), canines (tearing), premolars and molars (crushing and grinding).
Teeth need care: brush twice daily, avoid too many sweets, and visit the dentist. Decay comes from bacteria feeding on sugar and making acid.
Eat slowly and chew well; drink enough water; eat fibre (vegetables, fruits, whole grains); wash hands before eating; avoid overeating and too much junk food.
Constipation (hard, infrequent stools) is eased by fibre, water and exercise. Diarrhoea needs clean water and ORS (oral rehydration salts) to replace lost fluids.
MCQ 1: Digestion of starch begins in the:
(b) Mouth — Saliva in the mouth starts starch digestion.
MCQ 2: Absorption of digested food mainly happens in the:
(c) Small intestine — Through the villi of the small intestine.
MCQ 3: Bile is made by the:
(b) Liver — The liver makes bile; it is stored in the gall bladder.
MCQ 4: How many permanent teeth does an adult have?
(c) 32 — 32 permanent teeth.
MCQ 5: Villi increase the:
(b) Surface area — Surface area for absorption.
Short Q1: Why is food digested?
So it becomes small and soluble enough for blood to carry to cells.
Short Q2: What do villi do?
They increase surface area so digested food absorbs fast into blood.
Short Q3: Name the four types of teeth and their jobs.
Incisors cut, canines tear, premolars and molars crush and grind.
Short Q4: How can constipation be prevented?
Fibre-rich food, enough water and exercise.
Long Q1: Trace the journey of a piece of bread through the digestive system.
Mouth: teeth chew it, saliva starts starch digestion. Oesophagus pushes it down. Stomach churns it with acid. Small intestine: pancreatic enzymes and bile finish digestion; villi absorb glucose into blood. Large intestine absorbs water; waste leaves through rectum and anus.
Long Q2: Why are the small intestine’s villi and large surface area important?
Digested food must enter blood fast and in large amounts. Millions of villi multiply the surface area enormously, and their thin walls and rich blood supply let nutrients pass quickly. Without villi, absorption would be far too slow to feed the body.
Why digest (1): food is too large to enter the blood, so digestion breaks it into small, soluble pieces for energy, growth and repair — mechanically (teeth, stomach churning) and chemically (enzymes). The journey (2): mouth (teeth chew, saliva starts starch digestion) → oesophagus → stomach (acid + churning) → small intestine (digestion completes, absorption) → large intestine (water absorbed) → rectum and anus; liver bile breaks fats into droplets and pancreatic enzymes digest carbs, proteins and fats. Absorption (3): millions of villi in the small intestine give a huge surface area, so digested food passes quickly into blood, which carries glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals to cells. Teeth (4): 20 milk teeth, 32 permanent teeth — incisors cut, canines tear, premolars and molars crush and grind; brush twice daily, since bacteria feeding on sugar make acid that causes decay. Healthy digestion (5): eat slowly, chew well, drink water, eat fibre, wash hands, avoid overeating and junk food.
Revision tip: Trace a piece of bread through the whole system aloud, naming the job at each stop. Then name the four tooth types and their jobs, and explain in one sentence why villi matter.
