1. Elements
🏷 Tags: element, one kind of atom, Periodic Table, H, O, C, Fe, Au
ENGLISH

An element is a pure substance made of only one kind of atom. It cannot be broken into simpler substances by chemical means. Examples: hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), carbon (C), iron (Fe), gold (Au).

There are over 100 known elements, organised in the Periodic Table. About 90 occur naturally; the rest are made in laboratories.

ElementsOne atom kind→Symbols→Periodic Table→Cannot breakdown
2. Atoms and Molecules
🏷 Tags: atom, molecule, O2, H2O, CO2, chemical bonds
ENGLISH

An atom is the smallest particle of an element. A molecule is two or more atoms joined together: O₂ (two oxygen atoms), H₂O (two hydrogen + one oxygen).

Atoms join by chemical bonds. Molecules can be of one element (O₂, H₂) or of different elements (H₂O, CO₂).

Atoms / MoleculesAtom: smallest→Molecule: joined→O₂→H₂O
3. Compounds
🏷 Tags: compound, fixed ratio, water 2:1, new properties
ENGLISH

A compound is a pure substance made of two or more elements chemically joined in a fixed ratio. Water (H₂O) is always 2 hydrogen : 1 oxygen.

Compounds have properties different from their elements: hydrogen burns and oxygen helps burning, but water puts fire out! Breaking a compound needs a chemical reaction.

CompoundsFixed ratio→Chemical join→New properties→H₂O
4. Metals and Non-Metals
🏷 Tags: metals, non-metals, shiny, conductors, malleable, ductile, graphite
ENGLISH

Metals (iron, copper, aluminium) are shiny, strong, good conductors of heat and electricity, and can be bent (malleable) or drawn into wires (ductile).

Non-metals (oxygen, carbon, sulphur) are dull, brittle when solid, and poor conductors (except graphite). They are essential for life: oxygen for breathing, carbon in all living things.

Metals / Non-metalsShiny,conductors→Malleable→Dull, brittle→Poor conductors
Metals aur non-metals samjho: Metals chamakdar, mazboot, heat aur electricity ke achhay conductors, malleable aur ductile — non-metals dull, brittle aur poor conductors (siwa graphite ke).
5. Symbols and Formulas
🏷 Tags: symbols, formulas, Na, Fe, Au, CO2, CaCO3, Latin ferrum
ENGLISH

Each element has a symbol: one capital letter, or capital + small letter (H, O, C, Na for sodium, Fe for iron from Latin ferrum).

A formula shows the ratio of atoms: CO₂ means 1 carbon + 2 oxygen; CaCO₃ (chalk/limestone) means calcium, carbon and oxygen in ratio 1 : 1 : 3.

SymbolsH, O, C→Na, Fe→CO₂→CaCO₃
1 carbon + 2 oxygen.

LONG + ANSWERS

Long Q1: Explain why hydrogen and oxygen gases behave differently from water.

Answer / جواب

Hydrogen burns and oxygen supports burning, but water (their compound H₂O) puts fire out. In a compound, atoms are chemically joined and the compound has new properties, unlike a mixture where properties stay. This proves water is a compound, not a mixture of gases.

Long Q2: Classify as element, compound or mixture: iron nail, salt, air, oxygen gas, chalk.

Answer / جواب

Element: iron nail (Fe), oxygen gas (O₂). Compound: salt (NaCl), chalk (CaCO₃). Mixture: air (nitrogen, oxygen, etc. physically mixed).
