No official Class 6 General Science book was available on disk while building it, so no book page numbers are claimed here, and the exercise below is the library master’s SLO-based practice — it is NOT presented as the official book exercise and was not re-checked against the official book.
Energy is the ability to do work. We see its effects: a moving ball, a glowing bulb, a hot stove, a loud sound. Energy itself is invisible.
The unit of energy is the joule (J). Food energy is often measured in kilojoules or calories.
Kinetic energy: energy of motion (moving car, flowing water). Potential energy: stored energy (a stretched bow, water behind a dam, a battery).
Other forms: heat (thermal), light, sound, electrical, chemical (in food and fuel), nuclear (in atoms). One form changes into another constantly.
A torch: chemical (battery) → electrical → light (+ heat). A fan: electrical → kinetic. A car engine: chemical (petrol) → heat → kinetic.
Energy is never created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another — the law of conservation of energy. Some energy always becomes waste heat.
Renewable sources never run out (in human timescales): Sun, wind, flowing water (hydel), geothermal heat, biomass. They pollute little.
Non-renewable sources run out and pollute: coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear fuel (uranium). Pakistan uses hydel, solar and wind increasingly.
Turn off lights and fans when leaving a room; use LED bulbs; use sunlight in daytime; do not leave chargers plugged in; use public transport or walk for short trips.
Saving energy saves money, reduces pollution, and preserves fuels for the future. Every small act counts.
MCQ 1: Unit of energy is:
(b) Joule — Joule (J). Watt is power.
MCQ 2: Energy of a moving car is:
(b) Kinetic — Kinetic — energy of motion.
MCQ 3: Water behind a dam has:
(b) Potential — Stored (potential) energy.
MCQ 4: Which is a renewable source?
(c) Wind — Wind never runs out.
MCQ 5: In a torch, energy changes as:
(b) Chemical → electrical → light — Battery chemical → electrical → light.
Short Q1: Define energy and its unit.
Ability to do work; unit is the joule (J).
Short Q2: Give two examples each of kinetic and potential energy.
Kinetic: moving car, flowing river. Potential: stretched bow, water behind a dam.
Short Q3: State the law of conservation of energy.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another.
Short Q4: Why are solar and wind called renewable?
They are naturally replaced and never run out in human timescales.
Long Q1: Trace the energy changes when a boy eats food and rides a bicycle up a hill, then coasts down.
Food chemical energy → muscle chemical/kinetic energy to pedal up (gaining potential energy with height) → coasting down, potential → kinetic → heat in brakes. Total energy is conserved; some becomes waste heat and sound.
Long Q2: Why should Pakistan develop solar and hydel energy? Give three reasons.
They are renewable (never run out), produce little pollution, and reduce dependence on costly imported oil and gas. Sun is abundant in Pakistan, and rivers suit hydel power — saving money and protecting the environment.
Energy (1) is the ability to do work; it is invisible itself but seen in its effects (a moving ball, a glowing bulb, a hot stove, a loud sound), and its unit is the joule (J), with food energy often in kilojoules or calories. Forms (2): kinetic (motion — moving car, flowing water), potential (stored — stretched bow, water behind a dam, battery), plus heat, light, sound, electrical, chemical (food, fuel) and nuclear (atoms). Saving (5): switch off lights and fans, use LEDs and sunlight, unplug chargers, walk or use public transport for short trips.
Revision tip: Trace the energy changes for: a torch, a fan, and a boy cycling up a hill then coasting down — and state the conservation law in your own words. Then list three ways your home can save energy.
