This revised page was built from the existing Class 6 Mathematics library master chapter (chapter-8-complete-guide-book.html) in the same series. No official Class 6 Mathematics book copy was on disk for a fresh page-by-page check, so no book page numbers are claimed and the exercise below is the master chapter's own SLO-based practice set — NOT the official textbook exercise (the master itself labels it SLO-based, not copied from the book). Section explanations and answers follow the master chapter; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.

1. Variables and Constants
🏷 Tags: variables, constants
ENGLISH

A variable is a letter (like x, y, a) that stands for an unknown or changing number. A constant has a fixed value, like 5 or 100.

In "a student has x books", x can be any number. Variables let us write general rules instead of one example.

2. Algebraic Expressions
🏷 Tags: algebraic, expressions
ENGLISH

An algebraic expression combines numbers, variables and operations: 3x + 5, 2a − b, x². It has no equals sign — that would make it an equation.

Terms are parts separated by + or −. In 3x + 5, the terms are 3x and 5. In 3x, 3 is the coefficient (number part) and x is the variable part.

3. Like and Unlike Terms
🏷 Tags: like, unlike, terms
ENGLISH

Like terms have the same variable part: 3x and 7x are like; 3x and 3y are unlike. Only like terms can be added or subtracted.

Example: 3x + 5x = 8x. But 3x + 5y cannot be combined — it stays 3x + 5y. This is the most common algebra mistake to avoid!

Figure samjho: Only like terms combine — add their coefficients.
4. Writing Expressions from Words
🏷 Tags: writing, expressions, words
ENGLISH

"5 more than x" → x + 5. "3 times y" → 3y. "A number decreased by 7" → n − 7. "Half of a" → a/2.

Example: A rectangle’s length is 4 more than its width w: length = w + 4. Its perimeter = 2(w + w + 4) = 4w + 8.

اردو

"x سے 5 زیادہ" → x + 5۔ "y کا 3 گنا" → 3y۔ "کوئی عدد 7 کم" → n − 7۔ "a کا نصف" → a/2۔

Figure samjho: Translate words: more → +, times → ×, less → −.
5. Evaluating Expressions
🏷 Tags: evaluating, expressions
ENGLISH

To evaluate an expression, replace the variable by its value and simplify: if x = 4, then 3x + 5 = 3(4) + 5 = 17.

Example: if a = 2 and b = 3, then 2a + 3b = 4 + 9 = 13. Always use brackets when substituting a negative number: if x = −2, 3x = 3(−2) = −6.

SUMMARY

This chapter opens the door to algebra gently: variables and constants, what an expression is, which terms can be combined and which cannot, how ordinary words become algebra, and how to find an expression's value. Nothing here needs solving yet — just reading and writing algebra correctly.

  • 1. Variables and Constants: A variable is a letter that can stand for different numbers; a constant is a number that never changes in the problem.
  • 2. Algebraic Expressions: An algebraic expression joins numbers, variables and operations without an equals sign — it has a value only once the variable is given.
  • 3. Like and Unlike Terms: Like terms share the same variable part and can be added; unlike terms cannot be combined, only written side by side.
  • 4. Writing Expressions from Words: Words turn into expressions by fixed translations: 'sum' means add, 'difference' means subtract, 'product' means multiply, 'quotient' means divide.
  • 5. Evaluating Expressions: To evaluate an expression, replace each variable with its number, keep the brackets, and simplify with BODMAS.

Revision guidance: Practise the word-to-expression translations as a small dictionary, and when evaluating, rewrite the expression with numbers in brackets before simplifying anything.
