A martyr is a person who sacrifices their life for a great cause — for their country, their faith, or the safety of others. Pakistan honours its martyrs because their sacrifice bought the freedom and safety others enjoy.
This lesson introduces some of Pakistan's martyrs and the values they lived by: courage, duty, love of country, and putting others before oneself.
The lesson recalls soldiers and officers who faced the enemy without fear and civilians who gave their lives protecting others — including teachers and students who stood firm in the face of terror. Their stories are told simply, so young readers can feel what courage means.
One lesson runs through all the stories: a martyr's death is not an end but a message — that some things, like freedom and truth, are worth more than life itself.
Key words include 'sacrifice' (giving up something precious), 'bravery' (courage in danger), 'patriotism' (love of one's country) and 'tribute' (an act showing respect). Students learn them through the stories, then use them in their own sentences.
Word families help: 'brave' (adjective), 'bravery' (noun), 'bravely' (adverb). Changing a word's form changes its job in the sentence.
Stories of the past are told in the simple past tense: 'He faced the enemy.' 'They stood firm.' Regular verbs add -ed (walked, honoured); irregular verbs change form (gave, stood, fell, sacrificed is regular).
Practice: change present to past — 'He gives his life' → 'He gave his life'; 'They protect the school' → 'They protected the school.'
ماضی کی کہانیاں ماضی سادہ میں سنائی جاتی ہیں: 'He faced the enemy.' 'They stood firm.' باقاعدہ افعال میں -ed لگتا ہے (walked, honoured)؛ بے قاعدہ افعال شکل بدلتے ہیں (gave, stood, fell)۔
مشق: حال کو ماضی میں بدلیں — 'He gives his life' → 'He gave his life'؛ 'They protect the school' → 'They protected the school.'
Nations remember martyrs with monuments, memorial days, and by naming schools and roads after them. But the best tribute is living by their values: honesty, hard work, and service to others.
Students are asked to write a short tribute paragraph about a martyr they admire, and to think about how ordinary students can serve their country — by studying well, helping neighbours, and obeying the law.
Key points to remember — 1. Who Is a Martyr?, 2. Stories of Sacrifice, 3. Vocabulary: Words of Honour and 4. Grammar Focus: The Simple Past Tense. These four topics are the chapter's take-away ideas: read them in order, then close the page and say them back from memory.
یاد رکھنے کے اہم نکات اس باب کی بنیادی باتیں ہیں: شہید کون ہے؟, قربانی کی کہانیاں, الفاظ: عزت کے الفاظ, گرامر: ماضی سادہ۔ ان نکات کو ترتیب سے پڑھیں، پھر صفحہ بند کر کے انہیں یاد سے دہرائیں۔
Exercise Questions — with Answers (from the library masters). These are SLO-based practice questions from the library masters, NOT the textbook's printed exercise — use your school book for the printed exercise. The English textbook prints no answer keys, so these answers are the masters' model answers, not official keys, and are kept as written in the masters. The chapter has 5 multiple-choice, 3 short-answer, 2 long-answer and 1 Think question — all 11 are attended below.
شہید وہ شخص ہے جو…
sacrifices life for a great cause — A martyr gives up life itself for country, faith or others' safety.
شہید ملک، دین یا دوسروں کی حفاظت کے لیے جان دے دیتا ہے۔
'give' کا ماضی ہے…
gave — 'Give' is irregular: give → gave → given.
'Give' بے قاعدہ ہے: give → gave → given۔
'Patriotism' کا مطلب ہے…
love of one's country — Patriotism is love for and devotion to one's own country.
حب الوطنی اپنے ملک سے محبت اور وفاداری ہے۔
'They stood firm' میں 'firm' ہے…
adverb — 'Firm' describes how they stood, so it works as an adverb here.
'Firm' بتاتا ہے کہ وہ کیسے کھڑے رہے، اس لیے یہاں متعلق فعل ہے۔
شہید کو بہترین خراج تحسین ہے…
live by their values — Living honestly and serving others continues what martyrs died for.
ایمانداری سے جینا اور دوسروں کی خدمت وہی جاری رکھتا ہے جس کے لیے شہدا نے جان دی۔
'شہید' کی تعریف اپنے الفاظ میں کریں۔
A person who willingly gives their life for a noble cause such as country or faith.
وہ شخص جو ملک یا دین جیسے نیک مقصد کے لیے رضامندی سے جان دے دے۔
ماضی میں بدلیں: 'He faces the enemy bravely.'
He faced the enemy bravely.
He faced the enemy bravely. (face کی ماضی faced ہے)
قومیں شہدا کے لیے یادگاریں کیوں بناتی ہیں؟
To honour their sacrifice and to remind new generations of the price of freedom.
ان کی قربانی کو عزت دینے اور نئی نسلوں کو آزادی کی قیمت یاد دلانے کے لیے۔
اپنے پسندیدہ شہید کے بارے میں مختصر خراج تحسین لکھیں۔ آپ کن اقدار کو اپنائیں گے؟
A good paragraph names the martyr, tells one brave act briefly, and ends with a value to copy — e.g. courage, honesty, or service before self.
اچھا پیراگراف شہید کا نام لیتا ہے، ایک بہادرانہ عمل مختصر بتاتا ہے اور اپنانے والی قدر پر ختم ہوتا ہے — جیسے بہادری، ایمانداری یا خود سے پہلے خدمت۔
عام طالب علم فوج میں شامل ہوئے بغیر پاکستان کی خدمت کیسے کر سکتا ہے؟
By studying sincerely, helping neighbours, keeping surroundings clean, obeying laws, and telling the truth — service is a daily habit, not only a uniform.
خلوص سے پڑھ کر، پڑوسیوں کی مدد کر کے، ماحول صاف رکھ کر، قوانین مان کر اور سچ بول کر — خدمت روزانہ کی عادت ہے، صرف وردی نہیں۔
کچھ لوگ کہتے ہیں کہ شہدا کو یاد رکھنا صرف غم ہے۔ کیا آپ متفق ہیں؟ کیوں؟
No — remembrance also teaches gratitude, courage and responsibility; sadness without action honours no one, but living their values does.
A martyr gives life for a great cause — country, faith or others' safety. The chapter tells stories of soldiers, teachers and students, teaches words of honour and word families, practises the simple past tense, and ends with the best tribute: living by martyrs' values.
Revision guidance: Retell one story of sacrifice in your own words, then convert five present-tense sentences to the past before the exercise.
