1. Solute, Solvent and Solution
🏷 Tags: solute, solvent, solution, uniform mixture, universal solvent, salt water
ENGLISH

When a substance dissolves, the one that dissolves is the solute and the liquid doing the dissolving is the solvent. Together they make a solution — a uniform mixture, the same throughout.

Example: in salt water, salt is the solute, water is the solvent, and salt water is the solution. Water is called the universal solvent because it dissolves so many substances.

Solute→Solvent→Solution
2. Saturated and Unsaturated Solutions
🏷 Tags: saturated solution, unsaturated solution, maximum solute, crystals, heating
ENGLISH

At a fixed temperature, only a certain amount of solute can dissolve. A solution holding the maximum is saturated — extra solute just sits undissolved at the bottom.

A solution that can still dissolve more is unsaturated. Heating usually lets more solute dissolve; cooling a hot saturated solution can make crystals appear.

Unsaturated: room leftSaturated: fullExtra: stays solidHeat: dissolves more
3. Concentration — Dilute and Concentrated
🏷 Tags: concentration, dilute, concentrated, grams per 100 cm3, percentage
ENGLISH

Concentration tells how much solute is in a given amount of solution. A dilute solution has little solute; a concentrated solution has a lot.

Adding more solute (or removing solvent by evaporation) increases concentration; adding more solvent dilutes it. Concentration is often given as grams per 100 cm³ or as a percentage.

4. What Affects How Fast Things Dissolve?
🏷 Tags: dissolving speed, stirring, heating, crushing, surface area, solubility
ENGLISH

Three factors speed up dissolving: stirring (brings fresh solvent to the solid), heating (particles move faster), and crushing (smaller pieces have more surface area).

Note: these change the speed, not (for most solids) the final amount that can dissolve — that depends mainly on temperature and the substances involved.

Stir→Heat→Crush↓Dissolves faster
5. Solutions in Daily Lifeروزمرہ زندگی میں محلول
🏷 Tags: solutions daily life, evaporation, distillation, filtration, brass, fizzy drinks
ENGLISH

Solutions are everywhere: fizzy drinks (gas in liquid), brass (solid in solid), air (gases mixed), sea water, medicines, and cleaning liquids. Blood plasma is a solution carrying food, salts and hormones.

Separating a solution: evaporation leaves the solute behind; distillation can recover both solvent and solute. Filtration cannot separate a true solution, because the solute particles are too small.

Evaporate→Solute left→Distil↓Both recovered
✏️ Exercise with Answers (SLO-Based — NOT the Official Exercise)
FROM THE LIBRARY MASTER — NOT THE OFFICIAL EXERCISE

MCQs + ANSWERS

MCQ 1: In sugar water, the solvent is…

  • (a) sugar
  • (b) water ✓
  • (c) the glass
  • (d) the spoon
Answer / جواب

water — Water does the dissolving, so it is the solvent; sugar is the solute.

MCQ 2: A saturated solution…

  • (a) can dissolve much more
  • (b) holds the maximum solute at that temperature ✓
  • (c) has no solute
  • (d) is always hot
Answer / جواب

holds the maximum solute at that temperature — Saturated means no more solute can dissolve at that temperature.

MCQ 3: Which action does NOT speed up dissolving?

  • (a) Stirring
  • (b) Heating
  • (c) Crushing the solid
  • (d) Cooling the solvent ✓
Answer / جواب

Cooling the solvent — Cooling slows particle movement, so dissolving gets slower.

MCQ 4: Which method separates salt from salt water?

  • (a) Filtration
  • (b) Evaporation ✓
  • (c) Magnet
  • (d) Sieving
Answer / جواب

Evaporation — Evaporating the water leaves solid salt behind.

MCQ 5: Adding more water to a concentrated solution makes it…

  • (a) saturated
  • (b) dilute ✓
  • (c) solid
  • (d) hot
Answer / جواب

dilute — More solvent with the same solute lowers the concentration — it becomes dilute.

SHORT + ANSWERS

Short Q1: Why is water called the universal solvent?

Answer / جواب

Because it dissolves a very large number of substances, more than most other liquids.

Short Q2: What is left at the bottom of a saturated salt solution if you add more salt?

Answer / جواب

Undissolved solid salt, because the solution already holds its maximum.

Short Q3: Why can't filtration separate salt from water?

Answer / جواب

Salt particles in solution are far too small to be trapped by filter paper; they pass through with the water.

LONG + ANSWERS

Long Q1: Describe how you would obtain pure salt from a salt-water mixture, and how you would also recover the water.

Answer / جواب

Evaporation gives salt only. Distillation boils the water, condenses the vapour back to liquid water, and leaves the salt behind — recovering both.

Long Q2: Two beakers have the same amount of water. One has 10 g of salt dissolved, the other 30 g. Which is more concentrated and which dissolves faster if stirred?

Answer / جواب

The 30 g solution is more concentrated. Stirring speeds both, but the comparison of speed depends on conditions; concentration itself does not set the speed.

THINK & ANSWER

Think! 1: A cook adds sugar to cold lemonade and it settles at the bottom. Give three changes that would dissolve it faster, and explain one.

Answer / جواب

Stir vigorously, warm the drink slightly, and use finer sugar. Stirring brings fresh solvent into contact with the crystals, so they dissolve faster.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Solute/solvent (1): the substance that dissolves is the solute, the liquid doing the dissolving is the solvent; together they make a solution — a uniform mixture, the same throughout (salt water: salt = solute, water = solvent); water is the universal solvent. Saturated (2): at a fixed temperature only a certain amount can dissolve; a saturated solution holds the maximum and extra solute sits undissolved at the bottom; an unsaturated solution can still dissolve more; heating usually lets more dissolve, cooling a hot saturated solution can make crystals appear. Concentration (3): how much solute is in a given amount of solution — dilute = little solute, concentrated = a lot; adding solute (or evaporating solvent) increases it, adding solvent dilutes it; often given as grams per 100 cm³ or percentage.
