Akhlaq means character — the habits of the heart that show in behaviour. The Prophet ﷺ said he was sent to perfect good character, and that the best believers are those with the best manners.
Character is tested when nobody watches: returning extra change, refusing to cheat when the teacher leaves the room, speaking kindly to someone who cannot repay you.
Adaab are the manners of daily life: greeting with Salam, speaking softly, listening without interrupting, knocking before entering, eating with the right hand, and thanking people.
Manners are small, but they are the oil of society: without them, every interaction grinds. A society's civilisation is measured by its manners, not its buildings.
After Allah and His Messenger, the greatest rights are those of parents. The Quran commands kindness to parents, and forbids even saying 'uff' (a word of impatience) to them.
Rights in practice: obeying them in what is lawful, speaking gently, serving them in old age, and praying for them after their death. Paradise, the hadith says, lies under mothers' feet.
Neighbours have rights: share food, do not harm them with noise or smell, and help in need. The Prophet ﷺ said Gabriel kept advising about neighbours until he thought they would inherit.
Teachers deserve respect like parents, for they give knowledge. Guests deserve honour: welcome, food and a comfortable stay — hospitality is a mark of faith.
Three pillars of character close تھے باب: truthfulness (sidq) — even when truth costs; honesty (amanat) — returning trusts, from a borrowed book to a secret; and keeping promises (wafa) — a promise made is a debt owed.
The Prophet ﷺ was called Al-Amin (the Trustworthy) before prophethood — his character was his first proof. Students check themselves: which of the three is my weakest, and what will I do about it?
MCQ 1. The Prophet ﷺ said he was sent to…
perfect good character — He was sent to perfect good character.
MCQ 2. What does the Quran forbid saying to parents, even in impatience?
'Uff' — Even 'uff' — a word of impatience — is forbidden.
MCQ 3. According to the hadith, Paradise lies under…
mothers' feet — Paradise lies under mothers' feet.
MCQ 4. What title was the Prophet ﷺ given before prophethood?
Al-Amin (the Trustworthy) — Al-Amin — the Trustworthy.
MCQ 5. Which اس NOT a daily آداب taught ان this باب?
Shouting to win arguments — Shouting to win arguments is against adaab; speaking softly is the adaab.
Short Q1. What is the difference between akhlaq and adaab?
Akhlaq is character — habits of the heart; adaab are manners — the outward forms of daily life. Akhlaq is the root, adaab the fruit.
Short Q2. Name three rights of neighbours.
Any three: share food, do not harm with noise or smell, help in need, visit the sick.
Short Q3. What are تھے three pillars of character at تھے end of تھے باب?
Truthfulness (sidq), honesty (amanat), keeping promises (wafa).
Long Q1. Explain why character is 'tested when nobody watches'.
Because watched good behaviour may be performance; unseen behaviour shows the heart's real habits — returning extra change, refusing to cheat alone. That is true character.
Long Q2. A student اس polite تو teachers but rude تو تھے school sweeper. Judge this using تھے باب.
It fails akhlaq: manners shown only to the powerful are flattery, not character. True akhlaq treats the sweeper, the guest and the teacher with the same respect.
Think! 1. Which of sidq, amanat or wafa is your weakest, and what will you do about it this week?
A good answer honestly names one weakness and one concrete act (e.g. sidq: admitting a mistake; amanat: returning a borrowed book on time; wafa: keeping a promised help).
This باب اس about character and manners: what اخلاق اس, daily آداب, تھے rights of parents, تھے rights of neighbours, teachers and guests, and تھے three pillars of character — truthfulness (sidq), honesty (amanat) and keeping promises (wafa). Character اس tested when nobody watches, and تھے Prophet ﷺ was called Al-امین (the Trustworthy) before prophethood. تھے exercise (5 MCQs, 3 short, 2 long, 1 Think!) اس solved at تھے end.
Revision guidance: Revision: first separate akhlaq (character, habits of the heart) from adaab (outward manners). Then the rights lists — parents (no 'uff', serve in old age, pray after death), neighbours, teachers, guests — and the three pillars sidq, amanat, wafa.
