This poem by Hafeez Jalandhari follows a small, humble drop of rain that doubts its own worth before falling — 'Na-cheez hoon main kaisa qatra' ('What an insignificant drop I am').
Once it takes courage and falls, other drops follow, and together they turn a dry wasteland green and revive withered gardens. The poem's exercises focus on completing verses and understanding its moral.
The drop's doubt is familiar to every student: 'I am too small to matter.' It looks at the vast dry land and feels its one drop cannot change anything. This is the poem's most human moment — everyone has felt too small.
The poem answers doubt not with argument but with action: the drop falls, and the world answers. Courage comes before confidence, not after it.
The moral is the nation's moral too: individual small efforts, when joined together, can bring about big change. One vote, one tree, one honest student — each looks like a drop, but drops together make a river.
The poem asks students to notice their own 'drops': one page read daily, one kind word, one tree planted. Alone each is small; together they green a wasteland.
Hafeez Jalandhari (1900–1982) wrote Pakistan's national anthem (Qaumi Tarana) and many poems for children and adults. His language is simple, musical and full of natural images — rain, gardens, seasons.
Students practice completing the poem's verses: the teacher reads half a line and the class supplies the missing words — a memory and rhythm exercise.
The poem ends as a question for each reader: what is your first drop? What small brave thing will you do today, even if it seems too small to matter?
Write it down, do it, and watch who follows. The first drop never knows it started a river — until the garden turns green.

If one student picks up litter, others follow, and soon the whole school is clean — one 'drop' of effort, joined by others, greens the 'wasteland' of a dirty school.
A good completion keeps the doubt and the rhyme while hinting at courage — e.g. that even a small drop, falling, can begin a rain. The point is doubt answered by action.
The poem says: be the first drop — do the small brave thing (one page, one kind word, one tree) and watch others follow; a river never begins with a river, it begins with a drop.
